  1. The fact that universities had their heydays in the 19th century has a history. The main aspect from the age of enlightenment was the renunciation of religion, which means that knowledge was no longer imparted by abbey or similar institutions.
One thing that the age of enlightenment entailed was haughtiness. Ever since there are people who claim that there is no need for religion and that they can explain and know everything, though they found out that not everything is explainable nor knowable. The society back then needed substitutions, to give significance to somethings and wanted universities to have significance, but they are lacking functions. It is not just that the content cannot assume this significance, but that it cannot take up the functions in the society it would like to take. There are various fields or professions in which universities are not involved, starting with services, pizza bakers or cleaning ladies. It sometimes seems like that academic people sometimes are not down to earth and think they are more important than others, although there are many professions, for which there is no university degree needed, which are very important for our society.
All in all I think that the university does not have the central importance it would like to have.

To end it with a quote from J. W. v. Goethe, Faust: “And here, poor fool, I stand once more, no wiser than I was before.“

    1. All reason for Goethe!

  2. At my home university i study a lot about life long learning. But i saw, that today’s students don’t care about studying in real, some of them don’t presence on most of the classes, or who is there, just using facebook in half time, and just some of them pay attention for the class. So this video is unfortunately true, and we have to think about it, how can we solve this problem. I think we can say it is 40% blame on he students, and 60% of the education (like curriculum, the teachers, the coursebooks, and the atmosphere, and so on). In Hungary, the student’s life after the university is almost futureless, because it is really hard to find a job (like a lot of countries in the world), and the students think why is it worth to spend 3-5 more years in school and of course a lot of money if there isn’t too much chance that they get a good job? They are right, but i think we have to do our best, and keep going, and studying until we can.

This video is very interesting and relevant to our age group as it is the truth of what happens in our academic lives all the time. Universities themselves are not in crises it may be us as students who are facing the problems and university is causing many of them but it is also our saviour as we gain knowledge and a degree to help face the problems. College students have many problems, financially, socially, academically and lots more. Having lectures with huge numbers of students are a problem as there is little or no attention given to individual students so the lecturer is not aware of if the students are taking in the information or just on facebook using their smartphone or laptop. In smaller class sizes there is more learning being done as attention is given to individuals and it is easier to learn within the smaller class sizes. In my opinion it is not the university that is in crises it is the students.

  4. This film is an excellent Annex to this article and I think that every teacher should see it at least a few times before he starts his work as a lecturer. Because perfectly demonstrates the reality in which they are students after completion of their education. It’s like a collision with the wall at a speed of 200 km / h . according to to me European educational system is not adapted to the twenty-first century, we Europeans should take an example from the USA,where schools have a person responsible for their help in choosing a future career, what we see is acutely exam, when you look at the nationality of the owners of the largest online businesses.

I found this video really interesting! Really awesome idea of showing the truth nowadays. In my country we don’t have to pay to go to university, I am so glad about this. I can’t imagine paying so much money for studies! However it also have disadvantages, because now everyone wants to study, and now every year we have a lot of graduated people without job in their area of studies. The thing I don’t understand is that if u have to pay so much money for your studying, why you are not attend to classes? It is such a waste of money.. Comparing to the children that don’t have this possibility of studying. On the other hand also materials and all stuff additional, necessary for the studies are so expensive, even if you use copies. Also the video shows, the disappointment of the students, that education cost a lot of money, but the conditions of classes are not good. Too many students for a classroom make some students anonymous. The other fact is that we are surrounded by new technologies, that should help us with studies, actually distract us in every moment. So many important statements were upon in this video..

It’s hard to believe that a lot of universities are in a crisis, when I go see for yourself around me is that especially in the country where you live and the reason for studying. It is important that the Universities many good and powerful study courses aanbiedden. In the Netherlands you notice that a study is important and also get a lot of money to play by the government to provide the youth. Good and prosperous future It is mainly due to the political how education in this country is established. What are their main points and where they put their money on the side. I’m glad this is clear in the Netherlands, for a good study means a country that has more to offer at international level.

  7. In video I saw that a lot of students will be in debt because of studying. In Slovenia we don’t have to pay fees for studying. I am considering our nation as the luckiest one. But still, I cannot resist criticizing ungratefulness of the most of the students. Because studying is for free, no one gives an afford to finish study in a ‘normal’ period. Students don’t do the exams, don’t follow classes and if the assistance in class is obligatory, they bring all the possible technology and of course, they don’t follow classes (the same story as it was in a video clip-a lot of students bring their computers, but a really low percentage is using for notes or other things to follow classes). I think ‘old-school’ teaching wad definitely better. There were no distractions as technology. And knowledge was more valued as it is today.

If I look at the current situation in Slovenia I am worried about many things.
In one research I read that 1/5 of students when they receive a scholarship or earn something, give this money to pay some of the family bills or buy food to parents…??? As well the increasing emigrations of young people in foreign coutries, thousands have already gone in past years. If a man is constantly in fear that it will be next month transferred to another workplace, expertise can not be developed. It can not develop professionalism. Also because at every step we find some financial constraints. It is really worrying, because I think that all of these things increase depression and frustration, which may continue into violence.

  9. After watching the video, it shows that a majority of the stuff that was mentioned was sadly true. The cost of an education has vastly increased within the last couple of years. For example, in the UK, the fees to enter university went from £3,500 to £9,000 within the last 2 years. This caused a phenomenal upheaval within Britain and left a lasting bitter taste amongst the students. I for one have been lucky to narrowly miss paying this extraordinary amount and can only imagine how a student will feel having to pay this and leaving university with an even higher debt than myself. Personally, universities in today’s society is nothing as prestigious as it was 50 odd years ago and it is never guaranteed to secure a job at the end of the year. A friend of mine in Slovenia once told me that in her country, companies and organisations refuses to employ students with higher graduate degrees so they may avoid paying a higher wage fare for these individuals. I find this disgustingly unfair but in today’s economy, these are just businesses that are fighting to survive. I personally believe that going to universities should never be a must thing for a person. There are plenty of successful people today that have never have gone to have a higher education but have found a way to nonetheless succeed. Do I believe that universities are in a crisis? Yes, I think there should be a wave of reform for all universities around the world.

I think nowadays is not so difficult to go to university. However everything costs money. We have to pay quite a lot of money only for application form in Czech Republic. Some of my friends can not go to study on university because of money. In last years there was proposal for the pay for the study. A lot of students were against this, of course. I think, if we should to pay for study, it would be possible just for rich people and their ability to study would be to less substantial part. After the quality of education would be totaly bad. It is true, that nowadays almost everybody can go to university and some of them don´t want in the fact. Maybe, they only don´t know what they want to do, so they go on the university for gain time for » free life» without work. After it can looks like on the video – no students in the classes, because they are not really interested in studying. There are two different groups of students – students, who realy want to get new information and study a lot – this can be expensive way – pay the books, aids and a lot of things and next group – students who want to just enjoy their university period like free great time.
It is very important to do some change in admission of students into the universities.

  11. This movie was amazing really! I have to say I´m glad to live and study in austria! We have no taxes to pay for the university. I could never imagine or some of my studymates to pay 1000€ per year or semester for studying! We also dont have to do some prequiz or exams to go to university. We also dont have to be a good grade of mark average. If you passed your final exams of high school you are allowed to study whatever you want. There are some special studyfields like medicine with a prequiz. But all in all you can study what you want. Because of that our university system is very very bad. In one lecture with 300 places are sitting 450people. A lot of the chairs. some lectures are in cinemas because of the space. The teacher dont know our names. If you need help from your professor you dont get it. In the university for education where I study we had to to a pre quiz. We are 28 people in the class. We have a very good relationship with the professors. We know we will get a job after finish university because we are not hundreds who study the same! I am against money for studyng because education should be free. But I am for preexams. For a better quality! Who need 500 farmacis in styria every year? we have a populatin of 1mill people…

  12. It’s unsurprising that many students are perceived as unmotivated. In my point of view the children who are from lower income family’s need to get some financial help from the governmentfor stay in schools.
Every student must have a good education. Furthemore education is important because it leads to more job opportunities and a wider choice of jobs. Moreover today we can get everything or more than everything from the technology than a teacher. Teachers doesn’t have much jobs because e-classrooms and digital boards are helping students more. In the world around us the schools are adopting advanced methods for students. From these it is understood that technologies will replace teachers.

  13. We can welcome laptops, cell phones, and iPods into our classrooms, not as distractions, but as powerful learning technologies. Really? Unfortunatelly I don’t agree with that…Most of the time students spend time only on the social networks or jumping from page to page, doing nothing important or smart…Video was very shocking for me. After viewing the clip I can not even say anything about university or education, but about everything else. I am appalled by the fact how much time we spend on phone and computers during the lectures. We show no respect to speakers who lecture us and try to deliver knowledge. Students in the video are more then evident present in the classroom only physical and they show us that they could study from a distance, since in this case the Iecturers are obviously not needed. I do not know whether the crazy and fast life has brought us here or the addiction to technology but in any case, the state of people mind nowadays is totally indifferent and dull.

Previously, universities elitist clubs of knowledge, nowadays storm shuffling of students the halls. Many believe the fact that the quality of our universities has dropped drastically. For me it is difficult to assess because I can draw no comparison to the past. Therefore, it is interesting to hear what older univeristy professores think about this topic.
Everything was better in the early days? No I think not.
The areas of knowledge have shifted. Today, the average student has not to learn volumes of books needs to know by heart more. Rather, emphasis is placed on self-employed to obtain information, to process it and apply it to specialized problems.

As world is aging, knowledge is getting wider. So people need to know more than they had to. These are cons. But problems are time, duties, works, and homeworks. Then what do we need to do? we need to specialize on a specific subject. System should be like this. Theory needs to meet practice. It is the only way of development. Technology can only be a tool to solve the lack of time a little bit. University is in crisis to overloading with students and make them overloading with homeworks, exams. Both side of education system, Students and university, can only overcome this problem with specific subjects and practical methods.

  17. Karolina Brodowska dice: Responder

The biggest problem is that students do not have sufficient motivation to learn. It is difficult to surprise when nowadays there is no guarantee that the completion of studies provides a good job. First of all, teachers should pay more attention to practical classes to arouse the interest in the subject. I also believe that large companies should go out with initiatives to students. For example in Poland, at the Economy University they organized a competition for the best economic business plan for a large advertising company. Winning student had the opportunity to win a free-month paid intership in that company with a chance for full time employment. Therefore, i believe that the most important thing should be more frequent giving students the opportunity to use their knowledge in practice, because is the only way to get an experience.

  18. The video enclosed in the article is really sad and unfortunately true. By watching this video we can truly realize that education system on the level of universities (and not only on this level) is in a huge crisis. It appears to me that a lot of young people from different countries found themselves in students who were shown in this video.
Educational system majorly leans on a theoretical knowledge. In my opinion this is a main disadvantage of universities. How can we be prepared to take a job if we know nothing about the practical side of our profession?
What is more, we are required to learn (most of the time by heart) enormous amount of information which are no useful in practical aspect of profession.

For me it is not directly noticeable that our universitys are in a crisis. I study at two different universitys and recognize, that there are big differences. But both of them have for me pros and cons. In one of them for example no professor knows my name or even recognizes me, but for me it is a pro to be anonymous. I always got a place in each subjects, which I want to graduate and I always can make the exams, when I want, so I was never on a waitinglist. Another positive point is, that I don’t have to pay charges for the university, if I study in a foreseen time. I only heard about negative parts of the system from friends. This negative parts include exams, which should select students, because there are to many, or long waitinglists for subjects.

  20. To say ‘universities are in crisis’ is a very general and blanket statement which cannot be applied to all. Universities nowadays are trying their best in often very difficult circumstances. This topic is very close to home due the the fact that in England, when the university fees went up in price due to a change of government, from 3,000£ to 9,000£ this caused uproar and even riots in the street, the cause of this increase was the fact that a lot of the government financial support for universities had been dramatically reduced. Universities, in my opinion don’t have the same prestige, as for example 50 years ago, where to go to university was a huge and well-looked upon milestone in someone’s life, now it just seems normal.
I feel that I am very lucky within my university I have been presented with many opportunities to be able to travel, do work experience (compulsory) and, of course Erasmus, my university also offers a CV checking and employability scheme to aid in getting a job after graduation. However, the only thing I personally feel that is a problem is that many graduates leave university face a struggle in gaining a job. This can obviously be related back to the economic crisis, which, as the video says, we are the next generation to solve the problems that past generations have created therefore we have to be more intelligent and forward-thinking than our previous generations.

  21. I think the major issue of universities in crisis is somewhat due to how the education system is implemented. In Ireland, for example, most undergraduate degrees are four years. I am lucky enough to have been part of a course which offers “off campus placement” in third year of my degree which I can do work experience or travel abroad in my case I did both, which were very beneficial. But in the long run my experience and travelling is not guaranteed to get me a job as I am among thousands of other undergraduates who are in the same boat. I think that going to third level is a great achievement but in the long-run your hard work is not reflected due to a lack of jobs after you graduate. I think this is the same for most countries not just Ireland. It is a shame to see money being constantly wasted in this circle and for universities to make a revolution on how to solve this crisis that has been happening for a number of years. In Ireland, a lot of young people are unemployed after spending four years in college. I personally could say that most students would relate to the clip vision of students today. I find that in Ireland, some lectures ramble on about non sense and do not focus on the exact material that we most importantly need to learn and begin to lose concentration. I feel from my experience here in Spain, I feel that I can relate more to the lectures and they feel more relaxed talking to students, in Ireland University is more formal.

  22. In my opinion I agree that universities are in a crisis at the moment. There are students who spend a number of years in university achieving their goal in what they want to do in life but when they finish college in a lot of cases there are no jobs to walk into. I think it is a shame because graduates have spend thousands of euros completing a degree that does not guarantee them a job straight away when they leave university due to the economic recession European are faced with at the moment. Students often have to go on and complete masters and phd degrees in order to secure a permanent employment position. I think that sometimes students feel that their four year degrees isn’t enough to be fully qualified in the profession that they want to be. Also in my course in which I am studying sometimes I feel that the material we cover in lectures isn’t relative when wanting to become a secondary school teacher. I think sometimes lecturers need to review and change the material that they are teaching us in order to suit students who want to go into teaching.

  24. In my opinion, the main problem is the student can not study what they are wishing for, because of different problem. The family could be the one, because if the whole family is doctors, of course the child has to be too. The other reason why student unhappy after University is everyone just studying for better salary and not for happy life. How you can be happy if you work in what you do not like or your salary is almost a joke. The best solution to let them to choose what they really want to study and if during thestudies they able to change the subject. Of course a 18 years old how can know it what she or he wants to do during one lifetime. Nowadays is famous the lifelong learning, but I do believe everybody has a talent and we need to halp to find out what is it and help to go for it.

In the video there are a university which not work the way that it should be. The kids are unhappy, they can only see the bad things, what will happen to them when they graduate. I believe that not all the university like this. I agree that, students should not pay for learning, and I dont agree with the ridicolous student loans, because its just not fair. These people cant live their lives the way they want to, in this university they dont feel that the teachers care about them, because they dont even know their names. They learn in big groups, what not good for them, they only carry their laptop to do someting on it while the class ended. The classes should be more student friendly, the teachers shouldn’t force the kids to go to the class, instead of this, they should hold a class that is interesting, and what for the kids will go in happily. There are a lot of thing what should change, and I hope someday it will happen, but unfortunately I dont think it will happen soon.

  26. Universities have the national and cultural identity. In particular, efforts were made to strengthen in the 19th century.Over the past centuries has experienced and is experiencing periods of crisis in the universities. The politicization of the causes of this crisis, autonomy, universalization.I think this crisis are not very effective. After completing his university education, the real crisis begins.
Therefore, especially of education in private universities should not be based on money.Universities should be given adequate and necessary training. The sections to guarantee job opportunities should not be selected.Every individual should be directed to his favorite part.
This is perhaps the biggest crisis.

  27. I think all of what was said in this short video is definitely true. Very often people search for the problems in students, when they don’t want to learn. But often than not it could be teacher’s fault that their student’s are not interested in their studies. Because they know when students are not into a topic that much, but they don’t try to make it more interesting and get the attention of their students.
I think another big disadvantage is the size of some classes. More often than not you could describe this classes with the phrase ‘quantity oer quality’ and because of that it’s almost impossible to provide good lectures because there are just too many people in one class. There is just no time or space to start discussions or questions and these two are one of the most important things in a lecture for me.

  28. In my opinion, centuries before the establishment of new universities, economic, social and cultural facilities should be established or these deficiencies must be completed in a very short time. According to uniform university aims and functions of different structures rather than creating quality education and training should be increased. Contemporary universities are intertwined with society and will lead to the development of society should be structured. Universities can accomplish these multifaceted functions, but, according to the rules established contemporary developments and may be able to be managed. So, to say that in general the universities are in the crisis might be a bit exaggerated.

I agree with this text.of course there is a crisis in the university but also not.i meant all depends what students are doing in the university.if the students have responsibility should be not so many problem but in fact there are a lot of university which is special they just want to eatn money from the students and giving less attention of lecture. But if one university doesnt care about money then there is not crisis in that university.this is education and most important thing for the future of countries. If there is crisis in one university they must change the think of way and giving more attention to students not the money..

  30. In my opinion, not the whole universities are in the crisis. Yes, some of them are in the crisis but some of them have really good opportunuties for their students. It is up to their professors and their students. For me, if you pay attention to your lectures, and if you study day by day, you can be successful. But yes, in some universities, however you study a lot, you can’t be successful. Because of crowded classes, because of uninterested professors it gets worse. Some of them just read some powerpoint documents then they ask some questions and some people answer. But this is not a good way. If the whole class participate the lectures, there won’t be any crisis, and professors should invite the students to create new ideas. Because, nowadays people serach creative people.

  31. Biggest problem of the universities in crisis is applying the education system in a wrong way. Universities shouldn’t only give knowledge. Universities have to teach how to use knowledge to students. A lot of universities teach only theoretical knowledge to students but they don’t practice. We are learning many things in a university but we forget these things because we don’t practice. I think this is the biggest crisis that universities have. Universities have to have a certain standart. And universities should use this. In my country there aren’t a lot of universities applying this (except some). If ıt continues like this students can not learn how to use knowledge. We are only spending time in university. Consuquently good education is good knowledge and bad education is unearned knowledge.

  32. ‘University in Crisis’ for me states the universities whose first goals are only to gain money. There must not be a saying that universities are in crisis becuase it is not a company, it is not a government. Why would an education institution be in a crisis? I also think that universities should not be seen as a place to guarantee job. If a student goes to a university to find a job and if a university is getting a student to gain money, ‘education’ could not be found in this situation.

The roots of this problem lies in very deep in education system… A lot of students are studying the field that they don’t like just to guarantee their life (including me). In this case its normal to see universities using this oppurtunity and giving us just the degree and not caring about anything else. Both universities and students started to deviate from their purposes.
If this system continues like this there will be a lot of universities and ‘students’ in crisis. And this will effect countries directly which we can see now in todays world…

  33. In my opinion, should not be profit in education. For exampl, If a crisis in education in academics is removed from work for the period, this will a bad case in my country. This situation is a result of the commercialization of the university. No longer financially viable public and private universities is jammed in the first academics are being sacrificed. What are the training needs of all, do not count.Removed the rest of the instructors no longer have to work hard.Removed from those who remain in place of faculty will no longer be required to work more. Therefore education should be free.In similar crises, alternative solutions must be found ready.Because, a lot of young people are unemployed nowadays.I think a lot of student can be the same situation.

  34. More and more I agree that studying is one big business and that every individual/student is just an economical interesting participant. A participant of a system that gives marks to people that are working hard, to have a successful future. But once you are done there is no certainty that you will find a job that fits you for the rest of your life. The competence is getting bigger with the day and a bachelor diploma doesn’t distingue you, so now it would be good to go for a master diploma. Maybe in some years not even a master diploma will be enough…Technology is taking over the work of good working man. Now a day’s studying carpenter at college learns you how to program a CNC-machine, a machine that does everything a man can do but much faster and cheaper. So we are studying for something that in the future will replace jobs instead of creating jobs.

I don`t think that all universities are in a crisis. In my opinion there are some fields of study that really need improvement such as teacher training in Austria. I don`t really know how it looks like in other fields of study but teacher training really needs to be modernised. We have two different ways of training. One is at the university and the other on the university collage for teacher education. In my opinion this two should be mixed up because at university you really learn a lot about what you are going to teach later on and at the university collage you have the practical experience that is so important. So there is really a lack in my opinion. They are already working on it but it doesn`t seem that there will be a lot of improvement in the future. Now they extended the teacher training on the university collage but only temporal. Nothing happened with the theory. The new students have to study now 4 years instead of 3 although they have the same lectures. They don`t have more of them, they only have more time to do the lectures. I don`t know how they can call this an improvement.

t is true that universities in many countries find themselves in crisis. Also in the Czech Republic it is the same , and therefore many universities in the future together, forming a large complex. The crisis also can be seen in the fact that students studying undergraduate course at university, but the schools have accreditation for the same course in the master’s program, so students have to study elsewhere. Video I liked, because I think that in classrooms that goes as follows. I think that the classes are often much too large, many students and lacks the closer contact between teacher and student. The teacher does not know anything about the students why they are tired, whether the study should also work, often do not know the name. The error is also on the part of the students, the teacher may find themselves in crisis and students create a passive view of him. I think that should be in classrooms closer relationship in the classroom teacher and student. In the Czech Republic it works only for fields with a low number of students, about 20 students in the class. Here in Spain I like the relationship of teacher and student. Then, students are more motivated to work and perform better.

  37. I think that main problem in University is students attitude in clasess or main education at all. Every person has a change to choose what to learn and what to study, If student are really interested in that think what he is studing he will make a lot of effort to study everythink that he has to know. But if students ar just attending classes because they have to and they dont have choice they wont put 100% effort in studies. One of the main problems is that students are to lazy to even try to do thinks diffrent. For example, if they dont like the teachers way of studies or material that University offers they have to do something about it not just complane abotu how bad everythink is. I think if students are really interested in studies and their education they will do somethink to improve studies. One of the main problem is money because not all students can affort studies that they really want.

  38. Personally, I do not think that all universities are in a crisis. Universities are seen as the basic platforms for students to gain academic experiences, and enhance their way of thinking thus leading to a better much richer life experience, I’m the world of employment or academia. Universities should look at the approach of teaching subjects that are more related to the work place using practical skills, this will allow the student to be prepared for the world of work, much more. From my personal experience not all my classes that I attend the University are actually relevant to what I see myself doing in the future, the only reason I attend these classes is because attendance is monitored, this is one factor that goes towards my degree. I wish certain elements of my degree were different and more focused on the world of work which I wish to enter after completing my degree. Practical work is very important. On the flip-side, universities are seen as only the beginning or the basic platform for learning to think and educate yourself. This is a difficult balance to get right.

  39. The University in Crisis

As a second year university student I feel that yes, universities are in crisis. It is in my opinion that universities are training people and charging them heavily along the way for unemployment! I will have completed a three year degree programme and spend in excess of ten thousand pounds for this luxury, however I will not be guaranteed a job at the end of the process. I will be guaranteed though to be in a saturated job market with people who have the same degree at the same level however neither of us will get a job in the field we want. I feel that this needs to be addressed at government level and there needs to be better employment opportunities for those coming out of university with a costly loan and make it easier for them to enter the job market.

  40. I think that, for example university in Slovenia is in a crisis. We have different programs and possibilities for studying, but after graduation is a very big problem to get the proper job. A lot of young people are unemployed nowadays. When I was watching the clip about Vision of students today I also saw myself in this clip. And I think a lot of students nowadays feel the same. Even the classes are interesting I often use my mobile phone, sometimes I do not listen, because the teachers and lessons are boring and uninteresting and sometimes the lessons last more than two hours and my concentracion become so low after one hour. I see the differences between Slovenia and Spain. Here, in Spain are teachers and students like friends, in Slovenia are students usually just numbers for them. .

It is widely acknowledged that education has social, economic, political, and security benefits for an individual, for a society and for a country: Education is almost everywhere considered as the key to economic prosperity and a vital instrument for combating disease, tackling poverty, and supporting sustainable development.
It’s true that nowadays, the university is definitely in crisis. On the one hand students are going to the universities but they do not see the purpose of doing this. Usually they do not concentrating during the lessons, because the lessons are bored, professors are talking the stupid things. But the other hand students only want to get Bachelor’s and Master’s degree , but in the reality they don’t have appropriate knowledge or any experience. In the future this causes a big problem- we have many people with diploma but is only a paper which represent you have studied in a university. Unfortunately, real life verifies people who only studied only for paper and reward those who have real experience and want something more out of life.

I have to agree that nowadays universities in many countries are in crisis. What are the reasons for that? I think that current educational system can not follow changes of everyday life. What I want to say is that in XXI century there are so many technological inventions that could be use by teachers to make classes more interesting. Unfortunately, usually teachers are not up to date with most of them. What is more in my opinion classes are too big, there too many students what makes communication between students and teacher more difficult. Many people attend the class just because they have to be on the list to pass the course, but they do not listen or take part in classes, they are focused on their mobile phones or laptops. So the problem is also in students attitude – they want to get diploma, but they finish studies without appropriate knowledge. That is the reason of another big problem of many countries including Poland: we have many Bachelor’s and Master’s degree holder without experience, knowledge and finally without job.

I don’t think that all universities are in crisis. This not only applies the Netherland.Globally, international education today faces many challenges. At the top of these challenges, however, is one key problem. There are problems in some countries. In this case both students and professors are to blame . I think main problem for some students is the transition they have to go through, and by that I mean studying from high school to student life at university. In high school, most are used to get lesson from teachers, and thats it. In university you have to take responsibility for learning. Students have to prepare themself before lecture, and do their ”homework” properly. Professors have to change their approach as well, they are used to talk about same subject every year.

In my opinion universities find themselves not actually in crisis. Especially when I talk about universities in the Netherlands. That’s what I can tell they are not really in a crisis. Netherlands is a fairly open country that much is possible. Especially if you look at universities in the Netherlands happen there spring special and powerful things. They offer many opportunities and challenges for students, and I assume that this is good. This will benefit the whole country actually, or perhaps countries beyond. How is the situation in other countries, of course I do not know. I can imagine that politics plays a very important role. And that there are situations that are not correct or socially responsible. It is especially important for a student to a university for him has value and that he feels invited to participate in the teaching. Only then you can judge for yourself as a student or a college for you is good.

  45. I do not think that all universities are in crisis. This is possible in many countries as in certain countries there is not freedom of speech and the governments control everything. They do not wish for the people to have a voice or to see certain things so they are censored. This is also the same in universities. They censor what the students are taught and they are not allowed research anything properly as they will get in serious trouble with the authorities. This does mean that universities are in crisis as people are not being educated properly and are not able to see the world properly and make thier own decisions about certain topics and create new inventions to better themselves and the world. Education is about discovery and learning new things and if you ar not being educated properly in your university then yes the university is in crisis. However, this is not the case in every country and many universities are not in crisis. People are being taught freely and are allowed research their ideas and are given all the help they require to help them to pursue their ideas.

  46. I think that the crisis in the universities is caused by several factors: lack of job opportunities – which results in poor motivation to study, the quality of teaching provided by university professors, the number of students in the class, and the approach to the latest inventions in the field of technology. When it comes to teachers, I think an important thing is that they should feel the constant need to self-improvement. For example, I think that the system of hiring a teacher in Spain is detrimental to the education process, that is, once the teacher has been hired, he or she cannot be fired, has a job for life. Therefore, such a person (I suppose) feels safe and it may be often the case that he or she stops improving the quality of his or her teaching. When it comes to technology, it´s very often a great distractor. I myself have spent hours scrolling down Facebook during some boring classes. Maybe the restrictions on the use of electronic devices should be better thought.

  47. Sevde Sena Kuzucuk dice: Responder

I do not totally agree with this idea. In my opinion, this crisis is not about the universities, it mostly depends on the teachers, professors or students. Technological opportunities of today and the knowledge level we have, reach the climax. There are many professors who can adroitly use these opportunities and educate their students in a great way. There are also many professors who give students hundreds pages of works that are never read or controlled by themselves or make the students buy many books that are never used and opened. They just give marks randomly. There are many students who cannot make use of these qualified professors and technological opportunities, there are also many students who can get great achievements with these untalented professors or in a limited positions. If we generally claim that education, universities are in crisis, it can be wrong or unfair. I strongly believe that the success doesn’t depend on only a curriculum, a system, a teacher or a university.

  48. I fully agree with what this article and video clip in trying to convey. Like these students, i attend tedious lectures and classes, therefore, become bored and uninterested very quickly in the lecturer standing before me. My degree is International Business so in comparison with other degree titles with a guaranteed job/profession at the end the content in which I’m learning is vague and i feel puts me at a disadvantage. this is due to the university structure; there is huge focus on essay writing, passing exams and presentations where students are not learning valuable skills for their future but simply to pass an exam. this is wrong and we simply must experience real life work. Through this we can develop individual skills to benefit us in whatever career path we choose to take. if the time we spent trying to pay attention to poor, inadequate lectures was used wisely in a more ‘hands on’ approach to gain experience, it would be increasingly more beneficial to me and my future.

  49. Daniel Kinghorn dice: Responder

I do not necessarily believe that universities are in crisis. University can be seen as a basic platform of which to educate and better ourselves. Perhaps the university structure should be altered to teach more subjects which can be related to our future lives. In all honesty the majority of classes that I attend I do not believe benefit me, so therefore the only reason to attend is to learn what to do to pass well and subsequently get my degree. It does seem strange that this is the case. However in contrast to this it can be argued that you have to seek to educate yourself, and that university is just the grounding on which to begin. On the surface highlighting that so much time is being spent on facebook and laptops means that the individual should concentrate more, however the subjects being taught can sometimes be irrelevant and downright boring.

I need to say that I agree with a big part of what I’ve seen In this video. From my experienced I see that some classes are better, more useful, less boring and some in the opposite. Mainly it depends on the professors and here we need to change a lot. Fortunately I don’t need to pay for my studies, I didn’t even need to change the city or rent a flat like many of my friends. Some of them are paing great amounts of money for the chance to study. But my question is “is it worth it?”. For me the saddest part of this whole thing that even if you work hard during studies, even if you pay a lot of money the graduation doesn’t guarantee anything.

  51. Alexandra Mc Gurran dice: Responder

I can very much relate with the video within this article as a university student. It is evident that university is expensive but why make this the problem of the people who wish to learn and better themselves. How are they meant to focus on their studies if they have constant money worries?

Also if we consider this further, do we as students really know where our money is going? We are still being taught the majority of the time within the classroom by a person, we do have technology within our learning environment but I do not believe all the money that we invest into our education is going towards this.

Furthermore as a student I believe the university experience is quite dated. We need to learn by experiencing things ourselves, not by sitting in classrooms with hundreds of bored people, concentrating on Facebook rather than our lessons. I find it difficult to see how reading a lot of books with the same message and exams help us with our futures. On the job teaching needs to be incorporated a lot more into university learning.

These are points that universities need to consider however I do feel ‘crisis’ is a strong heading for the situation. I believe these problems when addressed could be easily solved; we just need a strong person to show initiative and courage, and make a stand.

This article, especially the video, is a very interesting one. I don’t believe that universities are in «crisis», I believe that to be too strong a word. However I do believe that universities face many problems. For example the large class sizes are a huge problem. If there is a large number of students then the professor can not focus on individual learning and students are not getting their needs met in the classroom. I believe that my university at home is doing it a better way, for example in one of my classes there are only 15 people, this means the opportunity for discussions and individual learning is stronger and it makes it easier to focus on the material we are learning in class. Smaller classes means students feel as if they are not simply a number getting information thrown at them and told to learn it but that they are an individual who is an important member within their university.

I liked the movie, it was very intresting, but technology does it really help us?
That is always the question. I want to go into the movie because this is an important aspect.
Students are increasingly working digitally, but is this really only used for school?
No, students are looking during the class more on facebook than they actually pay attention. Why is this? Is the teaching material or the teacher too boring. Or are you distracted because it is possible to use internet?
These are all questions that you may continue to .. But who knows really an answer?
The important thing is that you remain in the class and receives the right knowledge. Social media leads on what needs to be done.
Make sure your structure will be the lessons so this doesn’t happen. But is this possible? This point remains difficult ..

  55. The University in Crisis? I can not agree with this in 100%. I believe, that it depends on what kind of course you study and in which country.
For example, many courses are very interesting in themselves and it can be enough for students. They chose the course because they already know what to expect. But there are some students who needs an encourage and they do not get it, because the classes are performed poorly. The professors don’t care about the knowledge we should «receive». There are many as if not 60% of professors that should’t be even teachers.
During watching a video «A vision of Students today», I realized that at least 70% of what the students where «saying» was true.
And how can we change it? There are different mentality, role models, earnings in this world.
There are Universities in the worlds where you need to pay for studying and there are some that you don’t. Which is better?
If you have money you can study, if you don’t you can’t or can but afterward you are left with big debt on you credit card.
Or it’s better if no one has to pay for studying, but only people who deserve it can study ? I mean with highest marks after finishing the highschool?

  56. Christina Burgholzer dice: Responder

When watching the video it turned out that at least 50% of the mentioned statements are true to me and my student life as well. Nevertheless, I still consider my university and the opportunity of studying within a small number of students, namely up to a maximum of 60 people as something really privileged. I absolutely agree with the fact that our universities and learning institutions nowadays are all running into a wrong direction. Most of the people enter university because they don´t know what they want to do with their lives later, what kind of talents and opportunities they have and what kind of job would fit their individual talents and skills. I guess that’s also the reason why so many do something very different after graduation than they initially were studying and preparing for later life. There is definitely something wrong in the system as a whole. First of all I am convinced that it´s far too late to start with a change in the whole system only at a university level. If people could discover their skills and talents sooner, speaking in primary school up to grammar and secondary modern school, it would be far easier later to first of all make a right decision in order of studies and we would not have a ton of people in the same courses, of which not even 50 % of the attending students finally work in that area. Secondly, I believe that the offer of university studies needs to be far more specific. Specification is everything to my point of view. Since not everyone is good at the same thing to the same extent we need to create an opportunity of specialization rally soon in the system, in order to bring out people with specifically and highly developed skills in one specific area. Only considering that 2 points I think there is done already a lot and the initial step into the right direction is set.

  57. Natalia Chernykh dice: Responder

Naturally, all of what is said in the video is true. And in many cases it is the fault of the teachers that their students are not interested in education. But not always. Often students simply do not want to learn. There are students who do much, even if the teacher gives them material in the bad way. Because they want to.. At the university it is impossible to learn something, if you do not self-educate. So I think that we should change something more.. Not only the education system, and perhaps even the system of upbringing, that since the childhood the child should be given to understand that learning is not anguish, it can be fun and useful.

  58. I also agree with the main points shown in this short movie. Indeed the quality and objectives of many assignments students have to fulfill during their studies are useless and ineffective. However, I am also completely sure that it depends from the educational system and even administrative management or curriculum programming of the specific university. To say that in general the universities are in the crisis might be a bit exaggerated, but of course, recent social, scientific and political, even technological developments highly influence on the role and meaning of high education. There is a good challenge to adjust university requirements with the current life demands and to so high requirements in work market. On the other hand, the more opinions are proving that the current high educational level sometimes even low than it was in 70s, 80s when students were more motivated and teachers were more responsible.

  59. I don’t really know about the past of universities, because I never studied that. But what I saw in the last years is that universities are a place where people can think freely, in some countries, like arabian countries that went through a big crisis (Arab Spring) the idea that something had to change came from the universities, and they played an important role in the crisis.
A lot of people in universities have better solutions to make the world a better place than the people who have the power to make it, politicians, ceo’s and opinion leaders. That’s sad, because if they had, the world would probably be a better place, but capitalism or whatever other reason don’t make it work like that.
I don’t know if we can say that the university is in crisis. Universities are so different all over the world, they just can’t all be in crisis. They were, when in Spain the government shut them down, maybe they have less means to make the world a better place nowadays, but they still are very very useful and should have more power in the economy and political decisions I think.

  60. The movie was very interesting and I think most of the features suits on my student´s life too. As a problem I consider for example the size of the classes. It is impossible to provide adequete quality of education in this size of classes. There is no time nor space for questions or discussions. What was also very interesting was the percentage of useless assignments for our life. I know that we will probably never use the literature knowledges but they are part of elementary education. Unlike some assignments which we have to do just because the teacher needs to evaluete us on the basis of something. And last very truthfull one: «When I graduate I will have a job which doesnt exists today»

This is very interesting topic… Of course the universities are in crisis, but I think that it is not only teacher’s fault. Sure the school system today is obsolete, from the technologic side it is for sure also problem of lack of money, but then there is a personal side. I like the most lectors who are actually professionalists from practice so they can share with us their experience. Students understand better from examples 🙂 These teaching specialists can show you what can happen out there in the world. You can study the theory home from your book. But I was also thinking, that today’s students are from one point of view very lazy, so they study, what is absolutely necessary to study for the exam and are too much distracted to concentrate on one topic, for example during the lesson. That creates a superficial knowledges and that way the student cannot really become an expert in any field..

I believe that we have a crisis in the universities now. Students learn – because they have to, not because they want to. Nowadays, many people go to college not knowing what they want to do in the future. They choose not relevant to the interests of courses of study and can not find work. I believe that everyone should deal with what interests yourself and so has the motivation and willingness to learn. The problem lies not only in the students, now we have many teachers who treat students like things. No one comes to the student individually and does not motivate him to learn. A lot of fault also lies on the side of the students. It is necessary to change the system of teaching students.

Strong remittance about the speaking walls. Very intresting movie and the experiment. I think a lot of the time we are not realising who we are, what exactly are we doing and how our behaviour looks like from the side. We should think about this more often. But about the vision of students today I think it also depend who where is studying, because are really a lot of diffrents between diferent universities. Everyone is different and this is beautifull, but something we have common, and that`s why we should help each other, and follow together. Group have such a more potential then one guy. In group we have a lot of prism. Everyone have his own, so the ideas and the work is more effective.

  64. I totally agree with the statement that the university and all education is in crisis. Students do not learn, do not have the motivation, have no desire to learn. They are aware that most of the things that they learn are useless and certainly will not be no use for us in later life. Another reason is the work, the majority of graduates, students who finish education, they don’t have job, and if anything their find most likely not in their profession, not in accordance with their education, the lack of logic. University should move with the times, with 21 century, create new ways to attract students to use the technology in which so much is consumed, otherwise nothing will change.

  65. This video is an eye opener, not only for us as students (to us it is the reality), but for those teachers that are stuck in the «old fashioned way of educating». It’s an interesting topic since this is a widely discussed subject in Sweden at the moment. This article leads back to the earlier article about the school system and that a change is needed. The school system is still designed for the earlier days of teaching, instead we need to update both the system but also the university education of teachers. I believe we need to start with the teachers that are actually educating the teachers of the future. Because nowadays the basics in the way we get educated is the same as from the very beginning but in a different environment. I have had great teachers that have used another approach and actually «breaking the rules» when it comes to education and for that I am truly grateful, because this is the lectures I remember. Changing the school system doesn’t have to mean that we need to start all over and create something totally new..NO, instead we should focus on what we already know, change it a bit and then adapt it to the new system. Another thing to take in count is how we could use technology as an excellent tool when educating people. For example I think it is favorable when it comes to the interaction between teachers and students. Nowadays these two parts can communicate at a whole different level than before. Especially when it comes to the University where most teachers have hundreds of students in each class.
I wish that more teachers had the courage to try a different way of educating their students and at the same time get support from both the school and the students.

  66. I don’t know what is happening with universities but something is going on and it’s something bad. It’s the same in schools, nothing new was invented for last couple of decades and the life is going further but universities are not. Education system at universities have not moved on an inch since I don’t even know when.
Of course it’s nice to have a degree in some sphere of life but what you gonna do with it, apparently nothing. Lots of people in my country after graduating from university have thrown their diploms in a far corner and working on a constraction or are drivers, guards, clerks at shops. So where is help from university if they even can’t suggest to anyone any work?

  67. I don’t think that the Univeristies are in crisis, but many will say different.
In my opinion we should be very greatfull that we all have the possibilities to study, which was totally different if we take a look back in history.
Of course it is different in every country for every person. In some countries you can study for free, in some countries it will cost you a lot or in some countries you can receive a grant. But, in every country, there is the possibility to go to an University, which I think is amazing.
I also think that there are two kinds of students:
The ones who really want to learn and probably also worked very hard for it (for example, by raising money for being able to effort your study)
The ones who are obligated to study (for example, by their parents or by the society)
As you can see in the movie, you see many problems which are also very incontradiction. You can see students who are unhappy with the subjects or teachers. You can see students who work their ass off and almost live two days in one. You can see unhappiness about the costs of studying and about feeling like you are a ‘number’ in the University.
I think that ‘the ones who really want to learn’ will have search for a study in their interest, will read books and do their study the best as they can. These students can choose an University which they prefer.
‘The ones who are obligated’ will sooner choose a study which is not in their interest and will be sooner unhappy.
When you are unable to go to an University, there are still many ways to reach your goal you would like to achieve.
You can almost find everything on the internet, you can read books in the library and you will have the same knowledge as the other after their study, only not the paper for it.
But as we all know these days, it almost doens’t matter anymore if you have your paper or not, because you can achieve the same without an education at the University, but by experiences and self-education.

  68. We are responsible for our own knowlege and learningcapibilities. Steve jobs didnt finish his university.. I mean if you have ideas and want knowlege buy a book. I can succeed my uni without reading a single book but i dont because i want to learn stuff. I see a university as a place were you get the chance to ask questions, rent books for free and get a paper. What i am going to do with it is up to me. Plenty of good buisnesman and famous people did not do a university. I think we are respoinsible of our own knowlege and we get cheap chances and «proof» on a university.

I think the university has not evolved along with society. In recent decades the vision of education has evolved. Whether at the level of manners and also in the methods used today in education. That’s why today students feel a deep gap between their expectations and what it given to them. It is therefore important that the institutions are questioning. And at all levels. Of course government, also headteachers and teachers directly. Being in direct contact with students, teachers are well placed to try to understand and provide solutions to the «university crisis». Without forgot students, who have to be there to understand and resolve the crisis.

Univrsities are in Crisis ! thats true. But ı think; this isn’t just an economic crisis. Because the communities are in crisis.
deterioration of the economy, adversely affects educational facilities of the university. Decreases the quality of education in times of crisis. Universities have degree granting institutions become Money. So; the quality of education has declined. This education is interfering, students to gain competence in their profession.
The biggest problem other than financial matter is insufficient teachers and teaching techniques. attract the attention of students should be given training methods. İnformation shouldn’t be trying to impose. Without dulling the talent and creativity of children should be trained.
İn this way education will be more effective and lasting.

  71. I can absolutley identify with the students in the video, most of the problems these students have do deal with are the same problems I have to deal with.

I think most of the universities all over the world have to deal with political forces trying to influence university programs. In Germany the Bundeswehr ( German armed forces) tries to influence the university. They are trying to let the univerities do military research for them and of course gives a lot of money for their research projekts. Although there is a clause called » Zivilklausel » ( civil clause) that forbid military research projekt in civilian universities. But some of the German universities still do military projekts.
In my opinion universities have to be inidependent from the military and forces of the economy, otherwise independet lessons can not be ensured anymore.

  72. I am not sure if University today is always the right and most useful decision. It costs a lot of money and many subjects are not as good for the student with preparing him or her for the market as they should be. The problem ist that many companys want people with a bachelor or master degree and that is actually the problem. This problem also refers to the media sector. I think here for example talent and ambition is much more important than a good degree where my boss can see that I had a good mark in history of the media. Subjects at University should prepare students more for real work.

  73. First of all, i really like this video. It describe the young people who are studying nowadays. I totally agree that we are not «multitasker». If i speak for my own country, univercities in a huge crisis. Because people are not objective enough in univercities. Yes we use techology. (not much but yes) . We follow our teachers and they follow us. But they can not even tolerate to opposing views on social media. Interfering politics and school thats not true ! Also, we were paying every semester for universities till 2013 althought public schools. This crisis was overcome now. Almost.. Otherwise, most of teachers still use old-fashioned teaching system. They don’t think students can getting bored. Generally, we give our assignment to teachers hands, we used a lot of expensive books instead of webside or flash memory, sometimes boring presentations. I suppose to use technology better and all of universities can keep up with the times.

  74. Is there a general crisis in universities today?Yes. We are entering many exams and finally registering a university.Result all problems are just beginning. My teacher said us “ universities are the chance of countries”but now I’m not sure because when we went to university today are just spending time. The University is therefore in such a case wasn’t opened up new business areas for today and more than a million university students each year in the hope to lean the door, can be seen as a societal destruction and universities have been turned into competitive businesses. Universities which provide higher education have to keep up with these alterations nationally and internationally in the field of education, social life, economy, politics and technology.Universities should begin the alterations in themselves, and should manage this transformation by estimating future, and by taking decisions about future and taking some measures today. Universities should be initiated change and need to manage change.

  75. Nowadays universities are in crisis. Both educational and increasingly financial in my country (Poland), where higher education is for free. University board looks for financial sources and charges fees for all additional services and even for students’ mistakes made in university web system. They reduce employment and therefore the quality of education because then one person in obligated to take more responsibilities, has less time to prepare himself for classes and that is why is less specialized in one field of study. The problem of students may be that they don’t make a decision about direction of they future studies on their own. I mean, the facotrs like environment, sociaty, politics, media push them to make a decision, steer them. Afterwards thay are bored on the lectures and use technology insted of brain. The message is to study what you like and what you are sure about. Technological devices are helpfull in learning process and make it faster and easier to understand. The problem is that our generation doesn’t actually want to use it to this purpose. We spend way to much time on facebook which makes some addicted. This is the time for educational system to use the present situation and technologies. However, if student is well motivated and committed, he can get a well education even in the time of univeristy crisis. It is hard to change the young people’s way of thinking and it’s harder to make them making right moves in order to be a real student, not only a passing graduate student.

I totally agree. Also this video mentioned big problems related universitycrisis. Today there is a crisis in university. Some part claim there is no crisis. In my oppinion, this part supporter of capitalism. Today universities don’t answer to our requests. Universities are not autonomous. It is not about just technology. It is related about politic aims, goverment policies, instrumentation, etc. There is a develepment but it is not with true true aims. It is not effective for now and won’t be for future. I think it is going on like a business related aims. You need money in your university life, if you debt money so after graduate you will pay this money. Another point, we are training like a product. In a class there are so much students therefore professors don’t know students name. If I can say to example about my country sometimes more than 100 person in a class. And this means education. Can you believe that? If you want to teach your name you have to do something different. Otherwise today we can find easily on the internet and also it can be lazzy and we are addicted of facebook. Also there is no guarantee. After graduate we will meet some problems such as find to a job, ethnic conflict, discrimination. Conclusion, universities should be autonomous, should reassessment to university idea and should change politic-related regulations in university.

  77. I think universities are intertwined with a very big problem in this regard. Because everyone is studying with stereotypical knowledge and this is preventing creative thinking. The current system we have works well and it is easy to progress and find the requirements of studies. For example, if a student needs to ask about a presentation, they can send emails instantly, and carry out the research easily with the aid of modern technology. However, I think the information technology offers us is easily forgotten. What we learn does not become permanent. For me, I work from a computer and internet usage in my life is getting more persistent and developed. Yes, nowadays technology is necessary in everyday life. But its important not to abuse the readily available sources and to develop better technology that can combine human ingenuity in the best way. This will lead to more information being permanently stored in the brain and avoid relying on technology.

  78. Students have told us exactly in the video. We need university diplomas ıf we want to have a good job. We work so much , we try so much and we gain a university. Furthermore, we pay a lot of money to the University. We always go to the course. We never talk, we just listen. We learn as theoretically. We enter a lot of exams. We write our theoretical knowledge in examinations. We get high-grade from our lesson and we pass with success. We finish the university. We have diplomas that are required for the job. But it does not the job. Again we work so much , we try so much and we have a job. Now, they ask the application, not the theoretical knowledge. we do not successful. I think the biggest problem of the universities is very large commercial centers and is to unable to raise qualified personnel. There are many universities in each country, but there are also a lot unemployed. No time does not increase at the same time both quantity and quality.

  79. Firstly , I would like to talk about eassy .The most important problem is that people have to choose their subjects how they can find a good job .they don’t choose their subject because of their interest.I mean we are prepaering for just our job. For example a student want to be chemist but his/her family ,his friends and his/her teacher ect inculcate to him/her «dont choose that subject because you can find a job » then first time he/she doesnt accept then his/her family and friends persude him/her to be another job and I think it is the worst thing for children future .
Secondly I would like to speak about video specailly about internet , yes I really know that internet is very important everything on the internet now but for me internet is killing creativity and everything is so fake for example now everybody can reach knowledge very easly but before reaching to information was so difficult . I would like to ask one question ; where were we asking question before google ? for example Balzac ,Nitschze ,Einstein ,Descartes ect where were they asking their questions? but nowadays I dont know very good scientist therefore I think internet is killing us and I reached some information on google : There are 845 million monthly active users of facebook , but how many books did they read ?1 out of 8 couples married in the U.S last year met online maybe now we can notice something ;why is devorce rate is increasing ? Therefore for me internet is killing creativity ….

  80. Are we facing a crises in our university system of today? I think the answer is yes, or at least we are on a good way to do so. I dont think the reforms of bologna were a good idea, at least in germany it changed a lot of studies but not in a good way. In Europe the governments try to get a equal level of qualifications. But i think it’s really not the right way to just establish the beachelor and master system all over. I have the feeling that it is just easier for the government, since at least in germany it cost less money, since students are supposed to finish their studies qicker and dont have a variety in classes then before. I have the feeling that its not in the interest of the education itself, but to prepare students as good workers, suiteaable for economoy and the labor market but not for the ducation itself.

Nowadays, the university is definitely in crisis. Students are going to the universities but they do not see the purpose of doing this. Usually they do not concentrating during the lessons, because the lessons are bored, professors are talking the silly things which seems to be unusable at these times. It looks like we, students, have to learn because of diploma. The education system should be changed. The video shows many problems which really exist at universities, and not even there. The universities became like the factories which are trying to rebuild you and to make you to be labeled as a: economist, teacher, lawyer or something else. Why I have said “like the factory”? Because the number of students are very big, at one class there could be sitting like hundreds students. There cannot be any relationship between students and professor. Some could say that here is no problem but I think here is the big problem. Firstly, the most important thing is the person. The education should pay attention first of all to the human. When the professor is closer to their students, knows their names, abilities, then it could be like relationship between two sides. By doing this, not only the professor is teaching the students but also the professor could learn from them. There would be better productivity of learning in this way. The professor will know what students are expected for and the students will be more interested in learning. Also the students will feel that they are important and will pay attention because they will not feel like they are “one from hundred”. When person feel like he is important then he will try to do his best.

  82. I think the video highlights the problems in which we as university students can relate to. The problem that struck me the most was the girl who will be in debt of 20,000 after she graduates. How is she expected to shine in a profession if she has that much to deal with at such a young age? She will be more focused on just getting paid than on what she can achieve. Where is this money going? Should it not be invested into the University? If students find technology more interesting than watching a teacher writing on a board would they not update the classroom with the latest technology so students may have some slight interest in the class. Also I think that students do not get any beneficial experiences from just sitting in a classroom or doing assignments. I think students should be expected to do more work in relation to the real world and not just that in textbooks. They should be preparing for life experiences not for exams that are full of unnecessary information.

  83. I don’t believe technology is the reason for dis-engaged and un-motivated students; it may be a factor that does not help however it is not the reason. One problem with the university system now is that in the past if a student went to university they would be guaranteed a job, whereas now a large amount of students graduate university with a huge debt and no job. Therefore this has a huge effect on students of this generation’s motivation from not working hard at university and staying focused if they have no goal to work towards. Nevertheless another factor effecting student’s motivation can be teacher’s methodology and teaching strategies. If a lecture is not engaging, stimulating or interesting students will not focus and be able to learn. Even if there was not any technology to distract students, they will still become unfocused from the lecture and distract themselves in other ways.

  84. According to me, nowadays universities are in crisis in education. Because universities are often based on economics. In most universities, students attend classes there is no obligation. Just entering the exam and are required to pass through them. Students work just to pass the exam, but the exam again, do not use the knowledge gained after.
Students who are in need of something, knowledge is not as it used to be. Because they are in need of just a degree. Many companies today are doing business purchases only out diplomas. In addition, the technology that occupies a lot of space in our lives twenty-four hours is not enough time. So the technology would cause us to waste our time with trivial things. If technology is used in the right way, more positive effects can occur.

A lot of country lives this crisis period. I watched video and pitched me what exactly you want to tell us in. We do not report our opinion and our idea. They grows very passive us and we will not be sociable. Therefore a lot of graduates are unemployed. This situation is indicative of the university crisis. For example; in my country students of university must takes repay the scholarship. That is when we start to work we will pay back the scholarship. We’re starting life behind 1-0 , owed to the state as. According to the new law this year if student of university married, his/her will delete pay back the scholarship. With this system, students focus on their goals what do you think marriage was from. in this way make a career is impossible. I think this situation is education crisis fir students and economic crisis for society.

The movie showed the issue of young people using the internet rather than from science. Today it is a big problem. Today fades bookish knowledge is loses as Wikipedia, conversations with other people (eg our grandparents) are being replaced by instant messaging like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.
Today at universities comes only take the document graduate high school, not knowledge as it was in our parents. Today we can laugh with our parents or grandparents schools, but let’s see at wisdom average normal people. Today young people can not attempt for yourself the easiest decision, can not be creative and even the smallest adversity and can not be solved alone because so far all were consulted on Facebook or Twitter.

  87. I agree with the title of this article. I think the universities are now in crisis. I will talk about the situation in Poland – my Academy (state) probably in the next two or three years will be over by the nearby University. This situation is caused by many factors such as indebtedness of my university or legislative changes. According to me it is a problem which has its beginning in one important matter. Today, too many students in one year ends one direction. This causes problems with the appear of the work in its industry, and this leads to problems the university. Young people often do not go on higher education institutions but soon after secondary school to go to work and gain experience.

In my opinion, universities these days is in depression, because of government fault. The majority always tries to get more money from the universities, and everything depends of money. Now everyone can buy a graduation diploma, all you need is some amount of money and you can became master of economics or etc. People started to look careful to universities, because they can see a lot of corruption in there.
Nowadays technologies can help us improve technical things, it makes our life easier. Technologies plays a big role in students life. We are using a lot of technologies stuff and it helps us to improve speciality skills in different ways. With technologies we can learn faster, we can save a lot of time.

  89. I have actually not thought of it like that, that the university would be a big crisis and that the technology would be one of the biggest reasons to that. But I do agree with the fact that there are classes that the students don’t even have to attend to, and where you only have one assignment to. The students will only do what’s needed from them in theese classes, and probably nothing more. So it needs to be more of a discussion between the students and the teachers, more seminars and maybe bigger projects with smaller stages where the teacher can check how it’s going, how far students has come and help where needed. Sure, we spend a lot of time on our computers, doing things that is not connected to our studies at all. But the good thing with technology, is that it can connect the teachers and the students on another level, that was not possible before. The teachers can post powerpoints before the classes and have contact with the students via email. The teachers should not be afraid to use newfeeds that are the most popular among the students, such as twitter and facebook for example. So it would be great if the teachers could start to tweet interesting stuff or start a discussion on facebook or twitter. Because the students will learn so much more if they can discuss the subjects they are studying, instead of just reading about it/listening to the information for hours.

The sum of it all is that the technology is evolving all the time, so the teachers and universities has to keep up with it and develop in the same pace.

  90. The National Center for Crisis Management’s university/college crisis workshops and presentations are based on A Practical Guide for University Crisis Response, a publication of The American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. The presentations provide a structure and process for effectively managing the wide spectrum of university-based crises – from the seemingly mundane to the most severe. The Center’s philosophy is that effective university crisis response no longer just involves administrators and members of the Crisis Response Team – but all university personnell

  91. I also think that universities are in a crisis right now. Sometimes you can just attend classes everyday in 3 years and have almost nothing from this. Some studies don’t encourage you to do anything.
The only one thing you need to do is a presentation in power point . Some people prepare something cool , but most of the work is done to make and pass . Therefore, the rest of the students, who must sit and listen to something that is prepared just casually and therefore lose some of their valuable time.
You can go a whole year to school and do nothing . Learning two weeks before the session , pass the exams and then forget what you have learned . This is how is works sometimes. On the other hand it is good not having to push yourself ,on the other it is wasting your time . I think that a lot of things we are forced to learn only have the purpose of filling the gap. Some of them are so useless that barely after passing my exam I already forget them , I will never use this knowledge! To learn for the exam I have to devote a lot of time and once again wasting my time , instead of learning pratcical, useful things for life. I do not want to generalize all the studies and subjects , but sometimes it is true. I believe that we should learn less , but with knowledge that is more useful . The way in which professors give lectures is really boring sometimes . Even if I wanted I could not actively listen to the monotonous monologue for 1.5 h. It is not always so bad. I’ ve just focused on the issues that affect me directly.

  92. I think didactic teaching or also called chalk and talk worked for several years, the problem is that the world changed so fast in the last century with new technologies and ideas, but the educational system didn’t manage to catch up with everything else around it. 50 years ago it was a privilge to go to school and kids were eager to learn something, nowadays it’s a burden for most of the kids to go to school. School became too boring and there are so many other fun things to do instead of sitting in school and listening to a teacher talk.
Being a student at university is a 24hour job. You cannot expect that listening to a prof for 90 minutes is all you have to do. There are books to read and research to do, maybe presentations and homework or essays and projects. Being a student doesn’t mean going to university a few hours a day and that’s it. I think if you really want it you can work for it, and if it would be too easy everybody could have a degree and where’s the point of having degrees as a signal of your abilities whene everybody can get one.
I don’t think technologies are bad or good, it depends what you do with it. The internet is a great help for many things, it connects the world and it makes things easier, but it can also harm you.
In Germany right now we have a big problem that classes are getting too big and that damages the quality of the lessons and the profs ability to teach. This problem is happening due to economical pressure on young people to have a degree or otherwise you wont find a job.
I think it is time for the educational system to catch up…

In my opinion, at the moment, tehnologies become the most important thing in people life. It specialy for young people life, for student life. They even can`t study without tehnologies, they just dont know how to learn something, how to do something without tehnologies, without internet environment. I think that is too much, tehnologies supposed to be like helper in daily life, in studies, but not like the main thing. In the past there wasn`t any tehnologies, but people was smart, they can learn things too, and we have so many great people who made differences in world without any tehnologies. I think they was more creative, they read more books, they where more interested in life, to know more, to do more.
Talking about universities in crises, there are lot of reason why is that and therefore studies are not so effective and not so useful for students. Ofcourse one of the reasons is many students in class, the class with that many students is not effective enough, teacher cant talk with all students in person, and classes become not interesting and not so usefull.

  94. Speaking about the Technologies, I would like to say that nothing is white and nothing is black, and of course Technologies are not always functioning in the learning process as we would like to, but nowadays we can’t imagine schools with our technology and I think that most people even think – the more technology schools have, the better they are. And is it really teachers or students or maybe even parents’ fault that students in the class don’t use computers for studying, but something else? I think this is a problem which again is caused by the lack of interest in what teacher’s congeneric methodology. Which leads to that teachers must be more and more creative to interest students in something, because due to technology development and nowadays students’ attitude of mind, the number of possible distractions for students is class is increasing. But I don’t think students should stop using Technologies, they are very helpful and help to make studying process much easier and practical for both teachers and students. Teachers who have 2 hour long classes which basically is a 2 hour monolog should change their methodology, because at this point with computers, phones or other technologies on every desk or with any of Technologies in the class, students at some point will lose interest in that monologue. A number of activities, group-work, pair-work and so on, should increase. I know it’s hard to plan every lesson a little bit different, but I think this could solve some of the problems in universities nowadays.

  95. I do not think that the amount of technology we use in universities can help ‘save’ us but I think it is more likely to help students and lecturers alike rather than hinder them. Like it was pointed out in the video, when the lecturer uses a chalkboard, they are constantly moving about and changing things and often if they cannot write things down quick enough, they may miss an important point they wanted to make. The makers of the video also pointed out that by using a chalkboard we are missing out on visual aids- such as pictures, videos, animations, different webpages and colours etc. I know in my lectures that most of the visual aids used on the powerpoints have often helped me remember something- through the process of association and linking the aid to the point that was made in class. I think that by using interactive whiteboards and powerpoints it makes it easier for students- for one, Moodle is a massive help and we as students are able to find all the resources there from the lecture and it saves the thought of losing important pieces of paperwork.
I do think that university demands a lot from a student and that technology cannot be the only thing that ‘saves’ us- sitting in lectures for up to 3 hours is taxing on the brain and it does not surprise me that half of the students end up on Facebook within class, I know that I have done this many times in a boring lecture. Lecturers should ensure that there is variety within their classes so students do not get bored, such as group work or practical work. This way it might also help the students remember what they have learnt!

  96. In fact, university demands a lot from students. Actually, regarding for example my university, we do most of the work at home. From my point of view, the problem is the methology of lectures. The question is: What do we really learn during 90 minutes of a theoretical and abstract lecture? And how long do you think is a person able to concentrate on a lecturer’s monologue? I think there is a better way to get students knowlegdeable and smart. I would ask for more communication, interaction, imagination, explaining the own thougths and listen to different opinions – taking an active part in the lectures, not only listen to what is told. Because still, too many students don’t make it through university even though they would be good in their subject, but just because they are not able to study books and lecture notes by heart. It is a unfair practice for all of those.

  97. I agree with the title of the article. Universities are in crisis and we need some changes. The video left me thinking a lot more about the digital world today. Younger generations put all their attention on social media and students during the lectures search on the web, go on facebook,… But I think it’s not that they don’t like learning. It’s just that they don’t like school. The educational period is getting longer and longer and lectures are usually not interesting, there is too much theory and not enough practical lessons and discussions about current issues and situations. The students shouldn’t be forced to learn but rather motivated to learn with participating in lessons, working with them in the pursuit of answers to real and relevant questions…

  98. People have very different opinions , some say there is a crisis , others say no . In my opinion, it depends on how much a person knows about these institutions or education. Universities have to be modern and follow in time , it requires a lot of resources , so it needs the support of the state. More problems felt by the university and the program , which offered mastered the material is no longer very necessary in the country. More and more in everyday life comes technologies, which makes our lives easier and at the same time provides us with many opportunities. The disadvantage is that professors in universities use the old methods of teaching and do not know how to use the new technology, it means, that students are bored and they do other things, for example, use tehnology for their needs. Information presentation for students seem boring and old-fashioned. The students doesn’t enjoy books, because they can get the information faster with tehnologies. But, as has already been mentioned in the video, the students use their technologies for other thing not for learning. Also, it could be the cause of the crisis, because the students are not as highly competent in their profession, professors can’t give interest in lessons.

  99. My opinion about all this it that everything goes wrong. All things nowadays are modernized. People studies not in the school but in the internet and computers. Right now the situation in Universities and also in High schools are very bad. If we look for example 20-25 years ago when that new technology was not so popular, children listen all the time in teachers and made more conversations with them, and all needed works they made with creativity. In the last years meaning of word «study» has changed a lot. Right now we see that all information people got from the Internet, where a lot of information is not correct. In this case we lose a necessity for teacher work. I can not imagine what will happen after 30-50 years, how students will learn then. For better Univeristy work I think University need to pay more attention to student – teacher communication skills. They need to make smaller classes not 200 people in one class.

  100. I think that universities are in big trouble right now. A lot of people go to university just to get their degree because nowadays employers force or impose people to have a degree to get a good job. I know there is a lot o people going to university bo get knowledge but still theres a lot who goes only for degree. Another crisis it can be with technology. In one hand we have internet and in other hand we have experiments. Its good to use internet, but there is so many trash information that you have to be aware of that and you have to choose what is good or what is not. Another thing with this is that a lot of people take informations only from internet and whats happens with library??. The same thing with experiments. This is the best way to learn new things because you can see what its made. But the biggest problem is behave of people. They have to decide what they want. They want to study in a proper way or they want to pass their studies in the easiest way.

  101. I think that most of the students has a problem of getting bored in the lessons. My opinion is that in most of these cases it is teacher’s fault who can not captivate the people. And that is the reason why the student loses the interest and attention during the lessons. Then we used mobiles, internet, tablets and so to get out of this borning lessons. But todays modern techniques offers us so many options how to make the teaching more interesting. The problem is that not all of the teachers wont some change. Mostly, they come from different time and have their own methods which are the best for them but maybe not so good for the studens. So I think that to make some revolution or modification in already existing methods would be great step ahead.

  102. I think the crisis of universities is due to the module curriculum. Students are sitting in a classroom listening to huge long boring amounts of theory. Students need to be interactive in classes instead of sitting down listening to theory everyday. Studies show that students learn twice as much from practical classes than they do from theory classes. For example you will not be able to drive from reading about it you need to experience it. That’s what is lacking in a lot of educational institutes worldwide. Students get bored and tired of listening to people talk the whole time so they go on their phone or might not even bother go to class because they don’t see the point as they are bored. As we are the technology generation I believe it’s important to introduce technology into classrooms. We are a new generation and cannot be thought the same way people were 20 and 30 years ago. We need new up to date ways to get the best possible education for us.

  103. I think that universities are in crisis today, but I don’t believe that modern technology has much to do with why. The economic situation in many countries today has caused so many problems for so many institutions, universities included. In my country, universities have re imposed entrance fees in universities to help us escape the situation we’re in. But by doing this, universities have denied many people the chance of third level education because they simply cannot afford it. We are expected to pay a couple of thousand euro for one year of college and this amount increases by 250 each year. Nowadays, many families can’t afford to send their kids to university because of the fees, so there’s been a drop in the number of students entering and completing third level education. Those of us who are in college must work between 15 and 25 hours a week to be able pay our fees or loans that we have had to take it in order to pay for them. Another reason I don’t think the blame should be put on modern technology is because, by third level education, students should be mature enough to know that it’s up to them to do the work. You get out of it what you put in to it so if you’re not willing to work you won’t get the results you would like. While technology may be distracting, it doesn’t effect your education if you take your education seriously

  104. The crisis of the university
    actually a different article.
In many countries, this crisis is experiencing and will continue to experience
    I watched the video
of many students describing the thoughts a video actually
I said watching;  Sounds like my idea of how to
Students receive training on their own can not claim and the idea can not offer!
and based on the idea of a student in this video «only 26% relevant to my life» how much more will be ignored these findings?
Why are staying unemployed graduates from college, some of the cuts?
This is an indication of the university crisis
After graduating many, must do something, must earn money
the last video as»18% of the teachers know my name,» says
I think the fact that this is sufficient to explain many problems!

  105. I really like the video. It shows us the real situation at university. After the video was watched, I was thinking about payable studies, because at my university in my country it is going on a little fight and appeals against pay-studies. Scholarships are very expensive, students have to work that they can be able to pay study. I wonder whether they will have enough time to walk further to college in addition to the job? This reminds me of the girl in the video, which was written on a paper, that her neighbor paid for the study, but had never sat there.
Also, I was thinking about the new technology, which allows faster and better studies, access to all information. But on the other hand, it discouraging emphasis away from the study. This kind of situation is also happening to me, because I am bored in class, we have too much theory and not enough practical exercises. Therefore, one of my suggestions is to introduce more practice.
I realize that the reforms in the education sector take a lot of time, labor, energy, effort and struggle

  106. I think that the video reveals the most of the problem that universities have to face nowadays. I don’t know if they go through crisis from the economic or political point of view. But I think that they really suffer because they start to lack the interest of the students. This is the crisis universities have to fight with. On the one hand, the increase of technological advancement should help in development of higher education. It should encourage young people to explore, to invent. But it often happens that all the technological news distract them. Instead of doing research they just play with computers and Iphones. Instead of deepening the knowlegde thanks to easy access on Internet, they just search for limited information needed to pass the sucject. We need another transformation that put more pressure to knowledge, development and versality.

  107. We heard several times already that the humanities are in “crisis.” The crisis is real. Public universities have undergone a sea change in the past quarter century, as state funding has been steadily, and at times precipitously, withdrawn. Universities, in turn, have come to value especially those programs that can generate revenue through alumni donations, external grants, or tuition. Under this new business model, humanities programs suffer in general and small departments, like classics and philosophy, find themselves perpetually under threat, no matter what their historical significance to higher learning.

Are the university in crisis now…? It depends on point of view. On the one hand modern technologies can help us to learn, to discover various things. And that’s amazing! Without them we can’t imagine the world now. On the other hand (as students presented this in the video) by using them we become more lazy, everything we have at hand. Now we even rarely go to library! All informacions we need we can find on the Internet. This is very disturbing because for example when you read a book, you get not only datas you need to write an essey about some issue. You get wider knowledge and that’s make you more comprehensive.
There is some other problem: as student getting more lazy, just as teachers. My sister paid a lot of money for college. When she comes to class teacher usually says, «Everybody! sign on the list, then read two chapters of the book. In the next week-test» and that’s all! 🙁 Some students are pleased because they have more time for themselfs, some students are outraged. What can we do about it? I think the solution to this problem is a long tedious process, and the key to success is to make people realize that it is for his own good. without the good will of the people nothing will work…

I don’t really understand why the video puts the blame on new technologies… I totally agree with the fact that there is a crisis in universities, some things have to be changed. But regarding technology, I believe students are now responsible for their actions. Many words like «Facebook», «online» and «computer» appear. Even if I don’t have a good spot in a lecture theatre, I will try to follow otherwise: what is he point in coming to university ? It is that simple according to me. It is not a too vast lecture theatre which opens your laptop and Facebook page, is is your own will. I believe it is not creative to go back to former systems like suggests the video, we just have to know how to use this fantastic opportunity that is the Internet.
My opinion is that a XXIst century university should provide all its students with a course in which the main topic would be: the internet.

I usually spend two hours and a half online without doing anything constructive, but it doesn’t mean it hinders my learning. And even if I don’t get a good spot in a lecture theatre, I will try to follow: it is that simple accroding to me. Most part of students must recognized themselves in this video, even if it had been made six years ago. In my opinion, it seems like nothing changed, the situation just developps. However, even if I agree with a lot of points in this article, I don’t think that we can talk about a crisis. Universities are evolving in the same way the world is, they just adapt to suit. The society is changing and it can’t stop. Never had, never will.
In the video, one of the girls wrote «when I graduate I will probably have a job that doesn’t exist today», and I think it is all the problem. University is training students for they professional life, so what kind of knowlage should we learn in university if we don’t even know yet what kind of job we will do in the near futur? I think universities should focus on this problem and find a way to teach which could be adapted on the current situation.
What is more, the way I see it, the problem about technology is that we are trying too much to insert it as a work tool. There should be limits for its usage, too many things had been replaced by technology and it tends to make student lazy about their work .

  113. It’s right that our education, now, is not the same education than several years before. Indeed, in every countries and in each government, the education doesn’t look like the same but they go on the same way like building a strong cultural identity and secure his own future. But it’s true that all the things studied at the university, college, etc; in different area don’t promise us a job, especially in our world economy. That’s why universities had to give us all we need for achieving our own goal, precisaly to practise the job that we wanted since the beginning of our studies.
A lot of university and private school (business school for example), focus the education and the entrance selection on the results in most of students; that is why it’s not the same vision of education than centuries before. Now, we are not in an education logic for everyone but it’s more a competition for knowning who will pass his studies in the better manner.

  114. I’m very happy, that I’m attending this class, because of watching all this videos and reading articles, I have think a lot about myself, and my attitude to all this things and process, that porbably I woudnt think about it so much without this lecture help.
After watching the last video, to be true, ofcourse in some parts I recognized myself, but I have notice this before and I’m trying amend some of this actions. But anyway, I can’t totally agree that all university have crises. Yes ofcourse, in some parts, yes. And ofcourse there is always something what we can do better and certainly there is always a place to develop and grow in our education system. But if we talk about my home univeristy.. then I’m totally satisfied about it, I like what I’m studying, there is lot of profesional rectors, professors, wich led very intresting lectures, they personality and the way how the teach inspire me to study better, to attend lectures, and not just go to lectures and sit there, because you need to sign that you was there, but also to listen, to think and to take a part of this lectures. Actually, I’m study a lot, and when you are really intrested of what you study then it’s much more easier. So, for me, the most important thing it the professors… if they know how to involve students in lectures, if their lectures is intresting, if they presonality is inspiring, then from my view point there wouldn’t be no crises.

  115. While reading this article I have remembered on a movie «Educación prohibida» we’ve watched at one of my subjects a couple of days ago. According to this movie and according to what I have read it’s not just university, which is in crisis, but the whole school system. I love the part of the clip in this article where is written «the walls can speak…but students can». It’s obvious that the existing school system have no sense anymore. Diploma is not a guarantee for a job and the level of knowledge that we get from the frontal classes is very very low. I don’t understand why we keep insisting in that kind of teaching, why we keep on creating university programs which work in the same, traditional way, as previous ones, if we see that it’s not working. How many students finish beachler and master and at the end feel like they don’t have knowledge at all. This is a serious problem. The educational period is getting longer and longer, but just making it longer would not help to improve the knowledge and competences of the students. Nowadays society is shaped on technology, computers, visual communications…which definitely causes different expectations and behavior of the students. Books, chocks and black boards, writing in notebooks, memorizing useless details…all this stuff are boring for us. Maybe it’s time to replace those antique things by integrating technology into the classes. Moreover to shape the school system, university programs in a totally new way. Maybe it’s future in online lectures, maybe we don’t need university as a building and it’s enough to have just a couple of rooms where we would have informal discussions about what we’ve watched on youtube, what do we thing about the topic on the web etc. I think modern education should look more like what we’re doing right now at this subject…So far I feel definitely more motivated than in some other subjects at the university.

  116. I think universities are now in huge trouble. I’ll not call it a “crisis” but still something bad is happening. We often hear the voices of older people now that the university system used to looked different in their time. That only a few people were studied, and professors applied to their work. That the whole system works better that nowadays. Today more and more people complain that classes are bad, people who study are far too much compared with people who have to teach. Contact between the professor and the student in negligible. Since practically it is not a contact anymore, how is the student even focus on what the professor wants to convey on his lecture. Furthermore, we carry too much useless knowledge, too many things that in real life we don’t need. We are clogging our heads once again with information which doesn’t make sense.

  117. Certainly interesting to watch. Your articles seem to be a succession to, overall, the same issue except, each time, from a different point of view. The video is evidently an example (I’d say among many if I actually knew how many we (we being anyone aiming for more than what we currently get) are) that sums up in a way issues that require an always growing need to get thoroughly looked at / examined. It always comes back to the fact that we currently have a system of education that hasn’t fundamentally changed in over a century and there doesn’t need to be a genius to figure where lies the problem. The Vision of Students featured in that video suggested that the solution to this «equation» is Technology, some said only through Technology will we be able to finally to get out of this ancient predicament
I have to say that I agree that Technology is certainly a crucial if not paramount necessity to this issue. After all, with the way things are, the globalization being a natural turn of events, there is simply no way to imagine a future without technology taking part in everyone’s daily life on every aspect imaginable. Whether it’s the only or one of the solutions, no one can guarantee it but it doesn’t take long to understand that a solution is obviously needed in the current times and people trying to find ones are a rare commodity that we should gladly consider «buying».

Universities are places that combine practical education and academic knowledge. Knowledge often renews. New knowledge takes the place of old knowledge. Mistakes are taken off. Universities have to keep up with the times to develop. They shouldn’t be managed in accordance with the political aims of countries, their official ideologies. In such methods chaos happens in universities. Universities reflect social values. They affect social values. The opportunity, atmosphere, the quality of the knowledge that universities offer to students are very important. In universities departments should be free. This topic is a very big problem for universities. Tuition fee, the technology that can’t be followed, the plentifulness of the number of the students, the education of the teachers are very important

However, my university is not the trouble, because my course is not a big 8 people. But if there are common lessons with other courses and the number of students is 30 or more, then simply impossible to concentrate and the teacher fail to attract students because they simply fail to respond to all questions. And then there is the feeling that the students of teachers not important but important to get the money for the students.

The main problems that barricade good teaching environment in schools mostly because of getting used to technology so much. While the lecturing is continuing you can not stop doing things with your cell phone, last year Stephen Krashen came to our University for seminar (Yıldız Technical University) but i saw some people that texting etc. And the other problem is to going back to illeterate period of our life! If I am not mistaken in one of the university in Canada 20 to 40 per cent of Canadian university students are functionally illiterate. What does it mean? The teacher gives a group of students a pen, a pad of paper, and an hour to write a single page of meaningful prose that is largely free from spelling, grammar, or vocabulary errors. However, in a decade, really few of the student could be able to pass this test. What are the causes?

+ First, the rise of digital media (preferring LOLs and ROFLs).
+Second, high schools let students to graduate that can’t read or write well.

  121. Last year when i was in Language Acquisition class in my home university, the assistant teacher(!) told me that universities are not the place that lecturers have to teach or inform us about something but just we have to discover or find something new. My department is Foreign Languages Education so i will be an English teacher. However, if my speciality was science, engineering or something like that, i guess then i would need to make something new up. I mean i have learned that the universities are in crisis in this way. The professors are not able to overcome their ego to share their experiences to demonstrate us what kind of a teacher we should be or not and they do not behave us as a concious individual while they expect us to create inexistent. Especially in Turkey, it would be better if teachers did not forget that we were at the same age once upon a time. Firstle, they should be careful about being objective in a pragmatic sense.

  122. Education policies, professor of education to student’s attitude and motivation of students is the most important factors. I think that some of the lessons is really like the video. The result is proffesor the students who do not know the names of the students, the students lost interest and inefficient training course. The reason this crisis education system or technology? I definitely think the education system. Supports the training of technology and the internet, because if used correctly. But we the Internet is very true not used for the right purpose. If you look at the laptops most of the students do not keep a note on facebook you will see that they control. I think this solution is to add students to the course and increase students’ interest. Also there is one more thing that caught my attention in the video. Professor does not know the names of the students. I can not believe. Even without knowing the name of a student, how can you see his academic development? I think students should be valuable for a professor, you should know his dreams, and their of academic levels.

  123. This video shows a vision of students today and watching them I can see myself and majority of my colleagues. But problem is that nobody actually asks us what we think and how things could be better. There is constant discussion about crisis in all levels of education including universities, but no one does anything to help overcome crisis.

First problem that I can think of right now are too big groups in lectures. In my group at the university there are almost 70 students and that definitely is not good studying environment. I personally don`t like when there is so many people in classroom, in that way I lost my concentration and motivation to participate in class.

Second problem for me are professors themselves. To be a professor it is not enough only to have knowledge in certain area, they must have ability to convey that knowledge in an interesting way to attract student`s attention. And most professors nowadays are almost just reading facts from power point presentations and that is really sad.

Third problem is technology, but I am not sure whether to call it problem or not. We can`t imagine our life without it, and I always wonder how older people could live without computers, smart phones or internet. Most people say that phones and computers at class are distractions and I would partly agree. At majority of my lessons I am playing games at mobile phone and spending time on facebook and not paying attention to lecture at all. Of course that this is not good, but problem is not in technology, professors are the ones who need to make us interested in the content of their lectures, and do it in a interesting and dynamic way.

I can confirm that nowadays most of the universities work as it is showed and explained in this video and article. There are many studies where are around 100 students in one class which make them «invisible» in the eyes of teacher, there is not any bond between the teacher and the student. It is like some kind of process where you get only half of the information what to do, «million» books to read, exams which you have to pass and if not no one cares why you did not pass it or how, because you are just part of the system which can work and continue with or without you, because every year there are more and more students who are becoming part of this system and each of them can be replaced by others.

In my opinion firstly the universities must change their mission because for the last years the number of universities has increased.
Therefore, the quality of education has declined rapidly. We should focus on combining academic knowledge with practical education.
Undoubtedly, providing students more practical or academic education become a great issue in modern society. For students’ future work, practical education is really important; however, I agree with the statement that universities should offer the students with the access to the knowledge itself.
First of all, to develop the basic abilities, students should acquire theories in the beginning. If students do not gain any basic knowledge in their field, it may lead them run in to difficulties before they start to do their own projects. Last but not least, although practical education is important, it should be combined with academic knowledge. If students mere learn a lot of practical manners and gain a large number of practical experience in the universities, they will lose their basic abilities to develop new knowledge by themselves. Practical methods are based on knowledge. On the other hand, using academic knowledge to create the real things is students’ final goal.
The second reason of university crisis :University and politic. Universities’ becoming representative concepts of government’s official ideology, especially with the University Reform that held in 1933 in Turkey, prevented the establishment of critical thinking mission of universities. In that sense, universities have been closer to government’s ideology more than scientific teaching.
The third one important topic is relationship in university and society.the university is known a social institution. For this reason all universties should develop the social value .İn this way the university rises quality.

It’s true that a crisis exists in our universities. The thing is in France that it depends on your university field. For example : Business schools are veru difficult to enter but once in it the expected level of the classes is lower than before entering it. on the other hand, someone who wants to study Law has just to register himself on the Law university and will enter it. The fisrt year is quite easy but the more you graduate, the more the level is high and lots of people stop their career because of this tremendous increase.
I’m not sure we can talk about a crisis because everybody has a chance. An other example, in France we have a very famous and prestigious school which is called «Science Po’ «. It’s a challenge to try to pass it. But some people from the suburbs or those who don»t have the chance to study correctly, can enter it without any exam to write. university is a hot and horny topic and it’s gonna be very difficult to change the system.

Poland just like several other countries has been touched by dynamic changes in higher education. One of the main reason is decrease in the number of students due to demographic decline. Goverment doesn’t have a money for real help to public universites so now there are a lot of private universities. Unfortunately, soon we will not have enough students to maintain this large offer of high education. Universities fight for students. The war has started. Private institutions are in a bettert financial situation – all students pay tuition and fees. State supports financially both systems, but public universities represent the major part of the costs. Government wants to privatizing, as much as possible, public universities.
If there will be only public universities how students without money can study there? How can we think about our future if Goverment doesn’t have money for our education (I’m speaking about my country)? How could we train our own abilities if nobody really care what we will do?

  128. I would agree with the title of the article, in that universities are definitely in crisis. Students don’t seem to have the same motivation for higher education anymore and, from my own experience, only go to university because it is the social norm, and it is taken for granted that everyone will go. However, I find it very strange that students do not show any interest or even like the courses they are taking, even though they have chosen them themselves, unlike in school. It seems that for many they just want a degree and do not care what the degree is in, as many employers do not have specific requirements for the positions they are offering. I feel that the decline in university students satisfaction levels are partially due to the fact that class sizes are so big that students change from being a person to merely being a number, especially in lectures with hundreds of people where the professor has no idea who you are or if you are there. My home university is trying to remedy this problem by keeping class sizes low, with the biggest being 120, and having additional tutorial classes of about 15 to allow questions and discussions from the previous lecture and from my point of view, this is definitely a massive help.

  129. Universities are most certainly in crisis. In my opinion, technology, while having transformed education, has had many negative effects on the quality of education received by a student. All of my lectures in my home university consist of a large student population in an enormous classroom. It is depersonalised and the atmosphere is less than encouraging. None of my lectures know me by name. There is beween 100-200 in my classes and none of the lectures are interactive. The lecturer stands at the bottom of the hall and elaborates on the fancy lecture slides he/she has previously prepared. When you look around the classroom people are either twiddling their thumbs, on facebook or asleep. It is hard to engage in the material in such a dull atmosphere. However, we also have tutorial classes with small numbers once a week. In these classes I feel I learn more than I would it two weeks worth of lectures. These classes are more about the students opinion rather than the stanardisation that occurs in lectures. The atmosphere is interactive and we are also learning from the other students in the class. It is this type of learning that proves most beneficial. This atmosphere does not use technology to ensure a better learning experience. One could argue that we rely too heavily on technology and if we stripped back the copious amounts of technology used on a daily basis in university, there may not be such a crisis afterall.

  130. I agree with the fact that the university is in a big crisis today. In the video the students mentioned a lot of facts, which I can totally understand. The conditions they describe are almost the same in some of the universities in Austria. I’ve already experienced learning conditions with more than 300 students in one big room and for sure they are not reasonable and can’t guarantee a high quality of education. I’ve studied “social pedagogy” and I’m very glad that I graduated a few month ago, because I think I couldn’t stand it any longer. I want to mention my worst experience: I wrote my master thesis for two semesters and I had a meeting with my professor every week. So we were all the time in contact, but she couldn’t remember my name and the topic of my work until I handed it finally in. So I had to explain her my thesis every week again and again. All of the students had the same problem with her. But she is for sure not an individual case. A lot of professors in Austria are the same like her. For sure I know that she was very busy and she had a lot of students, but I think when you work together for such a long time it’s not a big thing to respect the students, take them seriously and remember their names.
But I also have to say that I’m studying another subject in a different university in Austria and there everything is different. I’s a very small university, I’m in a small class with 25 students and some professors knew my name form the first day on. I really appreciate to study there and I’m very glad that I can also experience this way of studying. So I hope that in the future education will be like this in all of the universities.

  131. Before the university I was sure that profesionals, for example doctors, have studied very hard in university and are very smart and profesional because of these studies. Many degrees = very smart = highly professional. But now studying myself and hearing stories from other students, how hard (or not at all hard) people study and how useful is this knowledge from lectures, I am not sure at all. Many people have studied one thing and later works at totally different position, totally different sphere. The most succesful people can be without any degrees, but with a vision and strength to fulfill it. University is as one of many stepping stones in life, and after it there needs to be very much practice.
After school at the age of 18 it is possible that person still doesn’t really know what to do with life and what is his place in society. He goes to university, choses something just to be a student, just to have a place. Maybe during this period he figures out what he wants to do and changes university or his life in another way. Maybe he gets excited by the subject he has chosen in university or gets very inspired by a professor who helps to see the bigger picture and his role in it. If a person has a vision about his role in society and what he wants to do, than we can talk about problems in university and how to change programms. But if a person doesn’t know what to do and is almost forced by a family/society/cultural values to chose some university and be a student, then we can’t really blame university for boring studies.

First, I want to thank you because you provide that video for us. Yes, universities are in crisis. I want to handle the universities in my own country. Generally, we should become free at universty, but we are not. I think universities should be free but in some way they are affected by politics. They stay under the influence of various groups. I don’t have any expectations the university which I study. I don’t want to do homework or memorize all information that will not work. We got the information in theory rather than doing practice or learning by living. And since we did’t use it in life, all information had been forgotten. Besides, universities should always follow the latest technological advances and science closely and should always renew themselves cause how fast we get the information, we can develop ourselves and we can produce new and beneficial things to the World. Lastly, as it was mentioned in the video, eight out of ten of the teachers know the name of the student. What a terrible situation! As if people feel themselves nothing as an individual. Since we don’t get the real information easily, the number of students in classes at universities shouldn’t be so many. When you gather hundreds of people together to teach them, the half of them might understand your lesson but the others might not because there are a lot of distractions at overcrowded classrooms. To sum up, I think it is not too late for anything. We should become aware of some important points and we should start to take some steps while we have time..

I agree with the title of the article: universities are in crisis. When I watched the video I recognized myself in some students and I think I’m not the only one. This proves that there actually is a crisis. Universities are the places where the new generation is “made” and shouldn’t be in crisis but should provide answers to the crisis in the world and the society. Because of the impersonal relationship between students and teachers a lot of students are not motivated, teachers won’t even notice if you are not in class –I think this is very sad-. Personal contact between student and teacher will improve the motivation of the students. Students are uninterested in courses they choose themselves, this is not normal. Maybe there should be a restructuration in the different programs so that you will learn things you actually need in life. In my opinion the crisis isn’t due to one factor but it is a confluence on various factors.

  134. University is an institution, that is to be constructed to make solutions when crisis situations arise. In my opinion, university is the very center where the solutions and alternatives are being made to improve the functions in particular problematic fields. It is difficult to make judgments, whether there exists crisis within university, because it is a place where new ideas are resulting from student works. And in the end we can see that nothing is more important as making the changes to get out from crises and maybe again make a new crises at the same time. I think, that there always will be some excuses for students, if the classes are not attended, but for those who are willing to obtain their aim there won’t be such a big depression during the study periods, that includes all the problems that students and professors might meet. There also should not arise the situation when there are too many people in the class, because if we take a look there are some subjects, that are completely without attendants. Meanwhile, the division in field of work is wrong and in common future there might be too many experts in one field that can lead to unemployment. The education needs to be well balanced and university should work more on provisions, to predict the necessary work force for future without crisis situations.

  135. I agree we have crisis in the universities. I want to talk about universities in my country. Firstly There is board of higher education in Turkey so the universities haven’t autonomy. Especially The students have a few rights. They can’t to be organize because their of expression is blocking. In additional to problems shown in the video we have same things. Everything is monotonous. We are doing so much homeworks we have to do so many things about school but what for? These things don’t help to us to ensure our future. Yes we will gradute but then we don’t know what will we do? we have so much uncertainty.Under pressure, unscientific and without change the students can’t be efficent on the life.

  137. Education is one of the most important «properties» a human being can have. With good education you can afford a better life for yourself and your family, you can set and reach more goals and you can codetermine more things. Education is part of your personality. Unfortunately, government in Austria (and in other countries too) doesn’t have enough money to improve and advance universities – the money is spent on other projects. Education doesn’t have that significance it should have. Universities are archaic, there’s no practical relevance, lecture rooms are overcrowded and everything is totally impersonal. You feel like a stranger. Every student is just one of many. The lecturers don’t care about if the students come to the courses or not. So many things should be changed as soon as possible but nobody feels responsible for it. Government and society should start to think about the importance of good education and its value and should «set the sails newly».

  138. I totaly agree with the video. And I know all of the world has the same problem. If educationists don’t do any changes abaout that this bad situation continue. At the same time technology is every day developing and its giving us some easinesses but it also mean less humanity less think less create less imagine…Education’s aim shouldn’t be that but it is unfortunately. Now Im student and later my children will be a student and ı think we will still complain that problem because everybody is aware of the problem but nobody don’t do anything. But we should begin to somewhere and chance that problem.

I agree that our universities are in crisis today, as supported by the video. I can relate to what the pupils are saying in the video that they may feel lost in a class of over one hundred and therefore may feel insignificant. There is no emphasis on the individual, which is in stark contrast to what we are striving to achieve in our primary and secondary education systems. A university student is not known by name, but as a number, as a statistic. The question can be raised that if a student feels ‘lost’ within a large lecture hall or has no real relationship with the lecturer then how can they have the confidence to embrace their curiosity and innovativeness to ask questions and facilitate their own learning. In my own home university of St. Mary’s University College, Belfast, we have small classes, the lecturers know our names and we have built stable relationships with them. This university has ranked 3rd in the UK for student satisfaction, after Oxford and Cambridge. However, the reason for this can not be solely placed on how our classes our organised. In contrast to what the pupils are saying in the video I would say that these students are now adults, therefore they should be responsible for their own learning. Perhaps throughout their previous schooling they have been too ‘spoon-fed’ and therefore expect all the information in front of them. University students need to engage themselves and be in charge of their own learning. The failure of this I think does not lie on the heads of the universities, nor of that of the pupils, but on that of their previous education. There is no quick-fix to this university crisis. One contributing factor for this university crisis could be the increase in fees and cost of living, especially in the North of Ireland which some students simply can’t afford. As well as this, our economy is bleak, with the prospects of getting a job in your specialised field not guaranteed, so there is a general feeling of hopelessness amongst students and their careers.

  140. This year is a discution in Slovenia about public support of the college and I am scared what will happen if we will have to pay for the study but on the other hand I can say that the quality of the programs and the varity of them is not that good so for example I am looking for a studies outside of the country anyway. I was looking for a studying in the California, because there is a lot of good programs for child psychotherapy but you have to have the money on your account before you come to the country and you have to show that the country wont have to support you finnacly. Than I am thinking how the hell it is possible to get a good education. All the good programs are for paying and maybe even the public school and on the other hand after I finish my school I dont really have a feeling that I gain a lot of knowledge. I am studying on my own and reading books that they are in my interest, so that I can get a proper education but still there is a problem becaus I still need a paper that I finished some progam. Nobody wants to give me a job because I read some books although I might know more than someone who actually finished the educational program. I am glad that there are discutions about this theme.

  141. I agree that universities are in crisis today. In my opinion the whole concept of university and third level education is too broad and general. As the video clearly portrays students are becoming more and more disinterested in relation to their own education. Why? I certainly think class sizes are too big. In my own university, the average class size is over one hundred students in the same room. This does not work. Firstly, because if there is too many people in the one room, it is very hard to concentrate and not to get distracted. Also, it gives students practically no opportunity to question facts or ask the lecturer questions. Indeed, how many lecturers know their students by name. This kind of superficial relationship does not bode well for the future. Hence, I believe class sizes should be cut which will enable for a more interactive and practical approach to education. Furthermore, I believe less and less students are attending university because lecture attendance is not compulsory. Therefore, students have no reason or motivation to go to class. If attendance was taken and accounted towards the overall grade of a module, I believe attendance levels would rise significantly in classes. Moreover, we have all heard of the term ‘free education.’ This certainly does not exist in my country. Third level registration fees in Ireland are approximately between 5,000-8,000 euro a year. This is a ridiculous amount of money to pay every year. Indeed, due to the state of our economy, the government is continuing to increase college fees every year for the next five years. This has led to a number of student protests through the streets of Dublin in order to protest against this injustice. Therefore, a lot must change if universities are going to emerge from this crisis.

I think that in Poland we can undoubtedly said about crisis of universities. Half of high school graduates are studying. A lot of them choose prestigious courses like for example law, economics, administration. They often take two or even three courses at the same time. They are really ambitious, universities send them at scholarships abroad, they also taking up work or some practices. And here appears a question : why these ambitious and apt students with great CVs and several certificates can’t find a job? The problem is in a system of education. In Poland there are about 300 universities which are not public and none of them is technical, biological, chemistry or medical university. And that is why the is not enough money for special equipment, laboratories or well educated staff. Majority has a humanistic education and there are too many people on one position on a job market. In Poland there is a belief that studies are the most important to get a good job, but it’s not true. There are still more people with diploma and apart from it we shouldn’t forgot about acquaintance with foreign languages and practice concern with our future job.

  143. I agree that universities across the world are in crisis today. This belief is supported by the video, it portrays an image that students are not interested in class, there are too many students in the class, the information being taught is maybe irrelevant or there are just too many distractions within the class to learn. I feel these issues are a result of todays society; most students are more or less forced to stay in education as there is no jobs are that the jobs do not paid good money. With this the students have no interest within the classroom, which i totally agree. With the issue of distractions again students are bored, so sitting there they become restless and cant concentrate and look for alternative entertainment i.e facebook etc. In conclusion I feel that universities need to reform their curriculum, classrooms and learning methods to make it more relevant & interesting; they also need create new alternatives as to just sitting in the one spot and staring at a whiteboard/projector. The students need to be motivated to learn rather than being forced to learn.

Technology is indubitably a factor that has advantages and disadvantages. It both assits studetns to continously and freely obtain information which iin turn educates them as well as hindering their learning. The extensive ability to source information from the internet allows students to retrieve extra information for things they are studying. However students are more dependent on the internet rather than thinking for themselves. From a personal experience I had a lecturer who refused to put any of her material from lectures on the internet and used a maximum of 3 brief powerpoint slides per lecture. As a result of this every student attended all of her lectures and was forced to write down all of the information in contrast to all the other lectures wherein we either did not attend as it is possible to read the lecture online. Her method of lecturing was undoubtedly the most effective and she did not resort to any technology. I also notice that in the majority of lectures I attend most of the students either search the web, go on facebook or text during the lecture. This exposure to technology ineviatbly hinders students learning.

  145. I agree with what the students in the video. With technology and the likes there is so much multi-tasking going on. People are in a lecture but also on facebook or are doing something else. Many of the things you do in class and the additional readings are not relevant to the persons life but still need to be read. That is why university needs to start placing more emphasis on practical study and trying to help make their course more relevant to their students. This is difficult when you have maybe 200 students in your class therefore smaller class sizes would be beneficial as it would make it more personal and the impact of teaching better. In my home university we have tutorial which consists of maybe 10 students with can be helpful for asking questions or for a discussion about the course to make it more beneficial to each individual student.

  146. When I was watching the video I had the feeling that I am totally in the same situation and I am a student with the same problems. I go two different faculties at home (tourism and catering and international business studies), but to be honest I am all the time busy only with the paperwork beacuse of the bureaucracy. In Hungary the educational system at the university has huge problems. On the classes we don’t do anything which would be really useful, e.g. real practicums. We have mostly theoratical lessons and before the exams we have to read some books and that’s it. The university do not give you the chance to be prepared for life. After studies we are not ready to work because we don’t have enough practical experiences. We have some free places at the university, but the people who have to pay they pay a lot and in my oppinion it doesn’t really worth. After university we will have the same degrees with lot of other people and no real experiences for work.

I can empathize with the students in this video, although I am reluctant to place all blame on the academic institutions themselves. I agree that many schools are too academicaly based and often regard practical and vocational learning as less beneficial to the ‘glittering careers’ that bachelor degrees holds for us. Many believe that success is directly proportional to the merit of academic success, i.e. degrees and PhDs will earn us a better standard of living. In this respect, I can sympathise with all those school-leavers pressurized into continuing to third level education by not only their schools, but the society in which they live. Often third-level educational institutions act as stifling environments for entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and individuality. However, I believe that many of the ‘difficulties’ faced by students originate in their own stagnant attitudes towards education. Is it really necessary for our professors to know us on a first name basis? If a student wants to learn, he/she will read the expensive textbooks they have bought and will listen to the lectures these highly qualified professors are offering. Quite often students expect to be given answers to learn off instead of actively engaging themselves in their fields of study. In Ireland, we have coined a term for this behaviour; ‘spoon-feeding.’ I believe that students are being spoon-fed too much, too often.

  148. With the Bologna-Process university became another place. A place which fits better to the market oriented, capitalistic world. The Individuum doesn’t take center stage but the aim to produce markatable labour as fast as possible. In Germany the content of four years was pressed in the Bacholor which contains only three years. Students suffer under pressure and in the end don’t get a good job with a Bachelor like primarily promised. The number of depression, of burn-out has rised and a lot of demonstrations in Europe took place in the last years.
University nowadays act often in interest of economy and politics. You don’t have time to visit other lectures of other disciplines because you are interested in like our parents. They were free to take their time and to follow their interests. But also I personally have the feeling that the students have lost their interest as well. A lot of students are just interested in beeing «successful» and having a perfect vita with a regular period of study and the perfect internship but aren’t very interested in the content. Maybe it is illusion but the stories of our parents in university sound much more interesting than I experience university today. I know people who studied math, literature and sociology. Nowadays such a thing is impossible.

  149. I feel that some universities have let their standard of teaching slip in some way. You have lectures standing in front of a crowd of hundreds of students many of who do not want to be there,do not listen, take notes on the information giving to them or in some cases the student doesn’t even turn up. This is to a large extend the students fault as to where their commitment and loyalties lay. You can also argue that it could also be the lectures fault. The classes can be long and boring with information being bombarded on them straight off a teaching script. From personal experiences I found that classes where lectures interact with the students and asks questions off the class tend to be more interesting and I feel I learn more from them.
The lectures does not know the student on a first name basis the pupil is merely a number in some cases. In order for lectures to know their pupils they must cut the size of the classes to a more manageable size for the lecturer. This I feel will strengthen the bond with student and the teacher and will progress the learning of the pupil more. You have more one on one time where you can ask questions and talk about different ideas.
I understand that in order to make smaller groups of students it will in turn need for an increase in lectures at the universities and with this economic climate universities are more interested with expenditure cuts rather than recruiting new employees.

I definitely agree with this video. Nowadays, there is a big problem with the universities and the governments don’t try to solve it . In Greece many students do not even come to classes because professors are not interested in teaching the lesson;so they prefer to stay at home and read from the internet . Also, in many subjects the students can’t take two or three books -as before- but only one because the governments don’t finance the universities. In conclusion, there were also some demonstrations against the study payment at the universities. All of that is really sad and especially because we live in the twenty first century and we face that kind of problems.

In the past it was the perception that if you went to school then to college or universtity you were gauranteed a job, however this is not the case today. Employers are becoming more and more choosy in whom they employ for there roles, they only want the best graduates and even at that sometimes the best graduates are not the onees fit for the job or the ones employers choose.
In the whole people who go to university today often go because they enjoy education or want to further their educational standards some in order to get a job and others simply because they enjoy it. However we in Ireland have seen a return of mature students to university as the job market has dried up and there is no work out there, which sometimes puts the universtiy in crises trying to accomadate all these extra students. I will be highly suprised when a university has to close because of the lack of students because there is still a high influx of students intending all over the world, especially in Europe.

Nowadays, most of the people after high school, goes to university. Is that because there is a perception that we must have studies. People uneducated will not find a good job, they will not exist.
If so, then why young people with several diplomas and rich CV for a long time cannot find a job? This question is difficult to answer. And this is one of the causes of the crisis.
But the main reason for me is the mass, which automatically caused reduction of requirements. Academic staff cannot cope with the mass of students, because they are not sufficient. Multiple increase in the number of students is not accompanied by a rise in the number of professors. Also in the library is often one copy of the book for a hundreds of students.
In addition, many of the universities exist only to extract money from young people, which are simply profitable businesses. Therefore, I think that the government should seriously consider the major changes in education.

  153. Johannes Nitschke dice: Responder

I think the Bologna-Reform changed our system of university education completely. This is good for studying abroad because the credit system is now comparable all over Europe. On the other hand a typically university career should now only last three years instead of five or six. In this three years it is not possible to teach good research or cultural skills. It is, like written in the text, only another form of school and not a period of individual working and developing.

But why have they changed the system for the worse? In my opinion there are two reasons: First the governments want to save money in the actual crisis. It is another question if saving money in the education system is a good decision. But fact is that three years of education are cheaper than five years. Second the economy likes Bachelor students: They are younger, which means more “flexible” and cheaper and the companies can form them very well.

The question is if this development is good for our future and our society. I think even for the economy and the government this new system is not good if you attend to the effects.

  154. I can’t belive there’s still classes like this seen from the video. But I liked what the students did, It’s a message to the universities. Something needs to be changed. People spend a lot of money for their education, but this is not the best way of studying.
In my studies, in my country, I’ve experienced something like that, but not that worse. In my uni, we have atriums (big open space in the middle of the building) and many ,,walls» of classrooms are made of glass so you can see what is going on in the classroom. I think most of my proffesors also know my name and they try to do as many discussions on the class as possible, also group works and so on. So that’s why I’m really surprised to see such things happening on 21st century. It’s not the way students should study in these days.

I really like the video and how it describes well the problem of universities, education and learning in general. The most things I saw on the video I do myself. Why would you listen to a boring class when instead you can chat, watch videos and pictures? Especially because students think that what they are learning is unnecessarily and that it won’t help them in their working environment. If they are even lucky enough to find a job after they graduate. After the lesson they are given an assignment and they will do it, but not because they like it, they do it because they have to. Today going to university is not about learning something for yourself that you think will help you in life. It is more like a obligation which you have to do in order to get a degree. Because nowadays the degree is a document that maybe, but only maybe will help you to get a job. If this hard is to find a job with a degree, I can not imagine how hard is to find the job without it. Of course that all the mobile phones and laptop we bring to class will distract us, but at home, when we have to do a lot of assignments like presentation, seminars they helped us a lot. The problem of universities is all together: students disinterest for the subject and doing something else at the class, then boring teaching and lot of book with unnecessary information to learn. If we all together try to make an effort things would change.

This video shows problems of many universities: too many students in the class and teachers don’t really know their students and they can’t check if the students are really working in their class. Nowadays, many students bring their laptops in class and most of the time they are connected on Facebook or on other social networks. Many students who are at university have no idea of what they want to do in the future and they are not really interested about what they are learning but they’re here because they had to do something after high school. Last year, i had some students in my class who registered at the university and who paid for it but who weren’t interested at all about this course so they were here just to do something and to be busy. I think that even after the university, most of the time, we are not enough prepared to go into the working life.
We spend too much time in class and most of the time it’s for learning things we don’t really need in the future, things which are useless and that we’ll probably forget after school.

  157. Without doubt Universities are in a serious crisis today,we are living in a 19th century environment of university life that no longer works. From the video it is clear class sizes are too large, with one student stating her average class size is 115 pupils and another stated that only 18% of teachers know her by name. How is this considered a third level educational system? Students including myself do the minimum amount of work prescribed or required to pass the course, we buy books that cost a fortune and we never read, attendance is more times than not necessary where students or their parents pay thousands of euros for college fees where students don’t even attend the lectures ‘my neighbour paid for class…but never comes’ we spend more time on face book than college work and even when we are in college we roam the internet during the lectures. Professors speak from a PowerPoint slide later available on Moodle which makes it feasible for students to work a job in order to pay for their studies! Where is the logic? I personally don’t know, but a change is necessary we need to opt out of this 19th century rut and live education in the 21st century.

  158. Previous to watching the video I would have imagined that the universities were not in as big of a crisis as I would have initially thought but now after watching this video I look at my own university experience and I can easily identify with all them students even though I am attending university in an entirely different country. It is a shame that university has become such an impersonal experience when it comes to the academic side. For example you can attend a handful of lectures or every single lecture and you still have the same relationship with the lecturer. One can sit in class and just be on their phone or facebook and the lecturer does not care. They get paid whether you are listening or not. Class sizes in Ireland are rather large so it is up to the student to take out what they can out of the lecture but at the end of the day a person who attends all the lectures and a person who doesn’t may still end up with the same level of degree. This is what the modern day university represents. When you meet students from another university the first question you may ask them is about the nightlife more often than not over the academic side. Therefore we need to assess where universities are losing contact with their students.

I agree and I like this video. Nowadays this is big problem, that, for example, in one class, auditoria there are about hundred people. They, who don’t get place in the first chairs, they need to sit in the back, and then isn’t possible to hear profesor. Also if hundred people graduate every year in the same field of study, how is it possible later to find a job? Also profesors can’t pay attention and work with every student separate. Thats way they don’t know student names, because, it’s not impossible. Students are taking with themselfs laptops and in lessons are chating with friends or listening music, not pay attention what profesor is talking about. For example, in my university, profesors are reading from presentations, from PowerPoint slides and after lessons, they send this presentation to students. Then, of course, students will not attend these lessons, because they will receive all information, about what profesor was talking in the lesson. Also many students didn’t attend lessons, because they are working at the same time to pay for studies. How they learn something? In educational system, there are big problems and I don’t heard in my country, that somebody wants to make it right.

First I want to say that there have been great video choices here in the blog! And I am looking for the next the next articles and videos.
But now I have to remember me to keep on the topic of this article 😉 Well, I think that the whole school system is in some kind of crises, not only the university. In my opinion one of the main problems for all of them is that they do not see the individual enough well. They are just thinking that people should study hard and graduate really fast. And that causes the problems that we saw at the video.
I think that behind of all the money talks too much. Actually I do not know so much about the financing system of the universities. But I am quite sure that for the universities and for the society it is good if students graduate really fast. But is it good for the individual? I think that usually no. For example I went to the University straight from high school so I have studied all the time after I went to the pre-primary school at the age of six. And now when I am studying at the university I want to study slower because I feel me too young to start to work.

The question is if it is just ,,universities`crisis“ or business or even entire wolrd`s crisis. What is blind the universities` crisis ? Is it a lack of professors, a lot of students, the quality of study, funding, or administration ? Nowadays it seems to be that society requieres an university degrese. There were also some demonstrations against the study payments at the universities. This issue is still not solved and that is why it is not clear whether the students will have to pay for thein studies or not. This topic is open since 2010. I think one of the problems causing this kind of universities`crisis is that the quantity is considered to be more important than a quality.

  163. I think that in the past was different because these times were on university just students who really wanted to go there and they worked a lot for graduated in field they wanted to work. Also a lot of people couldn’t afford to go on college, it was very expensive and also you had to live in another city. Nowadays is different. Almost everyone can come on university. If you, after the high school, still don’t know what you want to become in future you just choose one university (with the lowest limitation), so you have a status of student and because of that you have some benefits (at flats, food, scholarships, students work…). It doesn’t matter because in any case before or after you cant find a job and it is better to take student work than nothing. So more and more students will go to the university and the classrooms will be full of students who do not deserve and also don’t want to be there.

  164. In Slovenia all the faculties programs have been recently changed, we have now Bologna system. The problem is that in many faculties these changes were not thoughtful. I can tell for my faculty – I am first generation in new program and professors are really confused. Sometimes they do not even know what changes have been made. Furthermore, they are still making changes, during our studies. For example in my third year they remembered they forgot to give us one subject in the second year, so we have to do it in the third. For many mistakes I do not blame professors. I believe that it is very hard for them, especially because they often do not believe in changes that have been made. I blame people above, ones who transform the program without really think what this changes would bring to the system.

  165. Yes education now days is for all and we all want to be educated. Because of that we have overcrowded classes and really not interesting hours in classes. But you have know when you come on fax that your doors of intellect are opening. So you haave to to a lot by your selfe you have to be eager for knowledge. In Slovenia we have schools for free at least for now. And our main problem is that we’re to educated we’ll all have diplomas so in the end who will work for lees than 700 euros on month with diploma? Almost no one and now day because of the crisis we can’t find any job nothing because our level of education is to high. So that now days in Slovenia but I think that in the future my children will have to pay for school so than we’ll not have so educated people and will be better? We’ll see till then we just have to study and try to be our best.

  166. Nowadays technologies and changes have great importance not only in everyday life but also in the educational process. Including in any institution of higher education. This video shows problems of many big universities – high tuition fees, outdated teaching methods and large groups, where not only the professors don’t recognize the students, but also students really do not know each other. Luckily, I am studying in university where these things are more or less arranged and at least in my program I do not see any major problems. There are used both technologies and creative activities, groups are small and teachers know most of the students. I believe that studying in this way is much easier and more productive – if we look from the student point of view.
However, the problems exist and people should fight with them – and we can start with program content and effectiveness.

I think that nowadays technology helps us very much. Once, for example, the time when my parents were learning, it was very difficult to find a variety of materials, it was necessary to use only the library, where the materials were also limited. Now, in the age of the Internet, we do not even go out of the house to do the job to the school. Students send the materials to each other, which is literally a mouse click. There are also online libraries at universities. Everything is going forward, but sometimes it is also not too good because, unfortunately, but it does not teach us anything good often. We need to do some kind of presentation to the class and present it in front of a full house of students, who often just do not listen, just take a look at your phone and find out what’s on the Internet. It should not be like that.

  168. Technology can be a blessing, some institutions or teachers now how to use the new technologies. I think the key is to support teaching skills with technologie. A big problem i can see since i am on a university some teachers use the new possibilities not just as support but as completely basis of education. Technologie should support!
Another problem can be student side based, students should know how to use properly the new technologies. A student with an own laptop is nice but if he doesnt know how to use it properly for his learning it is senseless. The institutions need to teach also how to make powerpoint presentations for example.

  169. I think that where needed, children from lower income family’s should get financial help to keep their children in schools. Every student has the right to a good education. Technology can play a big part in improving the students experience, but it should never try to replace the actual education. One of the ways it should be used is to share information, to make it easier accesible to all the students. A teacher should always be their to guide them, and to help them in their progress when they can’t figure something out. There is however a risk when too much responsability is on the student, i think a teacher should be very well aware of the progress their teacher is making.

  170. Technology brings us a lot of new and faster ways to expanse our knowledge, make knowledge accessible and exchange our knowledge. The University benefits from that. Universities our grateful for the evolution of technology.
When Universities our not capable to personalize the relation with students, to motivate them intrinsically, University fails. A lack of personal contact between students and their teachers brings students into a position where they can easily lose their motivation. This results in not participating (fysical or mental) in class.
The University nowadays is big, unpersonal and static. Universitys should focus on creating an intimic, personal and open surrounding where people feel home and like to meet eachother. Where people like to study and work together, with the teacher around the corner for your questions.

The video shows that the crisis of University is really here and feeling and experience of students are verification of this fact. In Czech Republic is crisis as well. The quality of education is going down. Maybe the cause is in fact, that almost everybody can teach and it is not so good for quality education. When you study at the university, you can realize the pedagogical minimum for teaching at university like inceptor. Many of teachers are always complaining of their salaries but the start to forget why they are at the university and what is their mission. They want to have at least work as possible and sometimes they do not care about their students. The other problem is in diversification of the bachelor and master degree. Before you can study one programme for 5 or 6 years together to get master degree but today is different and almost every university has this system except of schools of Medicine. I do not see in this any benefit because you can not develop your knowledge and experience at the university. Sometimes in master degree programme there are students with another bachelor degree, so you repeat what you studied in bachelor degree but you do not move over farther, maybe only on your own initiative.

  172. On one hand, it is really good that we have such high-developed technologies, studies for student becomes more attractive, because you can learn things by watching some movies, photos or animations, it helps to catch main idea better and stays in student’s mind. And it also facilitates teacher’s work, if some years ago, teachers had to write everything on board with chalk, which personally i hated, then now they can sit in their chair and show everything on projector. But on the other hand, student is getting more lazy, if they are bored in class, they just take their cellphones or laptops and plays games or something. Ok maybe students, who most of the study time has grow up without using cellphones, they know the limit, when to stop using it and listen, but I can’t understand why 7 years old children needs a cellphone in school, they are not learning anything, and in future, they won’t know have to live without a cellphone or other technologies.

After finishing secondary school I didn’t know what I want to study, I was very confused so I applied for several programs, and I started studying not really knowing what I really want to become, and now, when it’s my last year of university I’m aware that it will be the most expensive piece of paper in my life.

I think one big problem is that much of the information we get on the university don’t feel important for our future. There is so much information and knowledge that I would pay a big price for in my education if I could. But this information doesn’t exist in my education (home in Sweden) at all. We get a lot of information that we don’t know what to use it for. I learn the most and best things on my internship. Sometimes it feels like nobody is having the responsible for the education. Okey, there is always a curriculum but sometimes it feels so abstract and farfetched so I don’t understand or believe it. Now I maybe sound very negative, but this video and article is, so it maked me see everything bad. I will only go to the university this once so I have nothing to compare with. I can’t say that it was better for 100 years ago or that it will be better, but I can say that I hope that things are moving in the right direction.

Ι would like to say that especially in my country, many of these problems have great dimensions.

In my opinion, the state is the most responsible for that, as it pays too little attention to education.

Many important issues, such as the selection of the books given to the students (for free until recently!), the curriculum making, the supply of technical equipment at schools and universities are not being arranged carefully by experts, but are being decided almost at random. As a result, most of them are wrong and much money is spent unconscionably.

There are also other problems, such as the excessive number of students in classes and the insecure future even for a person with many certificates.

Finally, in contrast with some of my classmates, I believe that the first to be blamed for the fact that students do not pay attention to the lesson or surf on the internet at the same time, is the teacher. I think that he has primarily the responsibility to attract their interest by making a nice lesson and not the students to pay attention to whatever a teacher says.

I think universities need autonomy in education to work efficiently. They should be also responsive to the necessities of contemporary education. The aim should not be just research things or teach some sciences, but also there should be some practical implementations of these works to technology. Also, universities should strive for excellence just like in the past and also there should be a competiton between universities. European universities direct themselves in a conservative way, however, thinking pragmatically should be the main aim as it is in American universities. The only way to orient societies is not to be in the government driven system, because politization makes universities worse and by this way they loose their properties.

Schools in general, I believe are in crisis but universities are supposed to be different, so they absorb most of it.
One thing that is not really clear now, with the idea of a university, is very much important, its purpose. Further addition of information is making the university, another school while making the knowledge more practical and concerning the job makes it redundant when that time could have been better spent on the actual job.
The extreme limits of the things that are taught in a university seem to make it look like wasted time. What team of professors, who spent 5 or more years in another university to gain knowledge, teach something that wasn’t around when they graduated?
And with that problem in mind, how can a student leap from the mere acknowledgement of a subject, which he gained in school, to the research of the highest complexity and difficulty a university ought to make? The gap looks great from either perspective.
Point is that schools have to help universities, I believe, so that they can more easily adapt to today’s needs and find their purpose

  178. I dont know how its working in other country but in mine i feel that university its late after the reality. they should following the science, knowledge and practice more efficiently. quite often i learn old methods which are dated and unused.
the second think its this that its not enough place to think, have their own idea, conception and discussion about it. Mostly the professors gives us knowledge with we replay on the final exam. its ok but i think we need more tasks were we can analyze and try to have our own opinion or find the possibilities results of some situation.

A lot of students don‘t even know what they want to study after graduating school. Only few of them are really attracted by one or other subject and want to continue their studies. But others have a dilema – go to study or to work? Some are going abroad to pick up fruits or build houses, others get a job in their country. But there is an approach that after school you have to go to study in a college or the university to get a diploma which I prefer. But most of students are just choosing the most popular specialties like management, economics, law because they just want to study something. And it doesn‘t matter that there are too many of those “specialists“ and not a lot of the most inteligent students will get a good job by their specialty. Also some of them have to pay a lot of money for these studies even the environment in the university is really unsuited for studies and the lecturers don‘t know why they are teaching. It is sad but it happens.

  180. In my country, Norway, everybody who have finished 3 years of high school can study, what programme depends on their grades. Also you can study if you have relevant work-experience. Teacher education have just started to become more specialized, it is increasing from 4 to 5 years in school and the students have to choose wich subjects they want to specialize in on their first year – the goal? better teahcers i guess.. Work practice is one of the things i really miss in my bachelor (economics), after soon three years of study, i dont feel like i know anything. The bachelor is actually just to qualify you for a mastesrdegree, so there is a soup of different things that we learn so that we are qualified to start a master, not in a real job…It is a common perception that a bachelor isnt much worth, but still a lot of people are studying them? We should make the bachelors more attractive to the job market!!

In the best schools in Norway the students are much more productive, ambitious and focused on career. why is it so? because the students are so smart? because the school is teaching in another way? or, school reputation? the expectations to the students? (self-fulfilling prophecies) – maybe..I think students today need to take more responsibility for their own learning..

The problem with too many students in the class is probably one of the main factors causing the crisis in nowadays university education (and any education actually). I think it really takes a lot from the student to focus when there is a 100 other students on the lecture. The truth is, that usually most of the people in this kind of situations, just take out they phone or use computer(which was supposed to be used to make notes) to check their facebook page. Another thing is, that more and more teachers are not so eager to teach us anything. They just do a Power Point presentation which they are just showing year by year and that is it, don’t have to prepare themselves from lecture to lecture. Presentation might be helpful but as some extra material which you can watch alone at home.

Problem with expensive books, which are almost never used, fortunately doesn’t apply to me because at my university we can photocopy them so it’ much cheaper. Of course it doesn’t mean that it’s the same in every university in my country. Probably no, but i am not sure. I think that in Poland we have this problem mostly in preschool and high school where really parents are spending huge amounts of money for books for their children.

  182. Nowadays universities simply assign tasks and students ought to independently write essays and reports, to prove their knowledge! But what about Tutorial meetings weekly with a reflection of your progress. In my opinion universities are becoming even more self study especially with all the technology involved. Its positive because i think through this way you know what you want to learn and when? A student could be missing classes and still passing exams. In classrooms with lap tops I dare say 25% are fidgeting with other programmes like facebook, twitter, youtube etc. The professors are not even aware of this despite being in the classroom! Everybody does whatever he wants. Its not that bad if you think of it, but when you take into consideration the generations to come which will be educated with much more technology! Instead of investing miliions like my university in England did 99 million Pounds. Where did they find all this money? I am sure they could provide more classrooms and mre tutors for public university education!

  183. University declines when it betrays its three constitutive characteristics: universality, autonomy and knowledge and falls in provincialization in the instrumentalization and politicization. Such great words that unfortunately is the real and the one true…

During the last 20 years, this issue is a current problem that make people and especially students worry about the originality and pureness of the system of universities…
The doubts are becoming more and more when universities are private. Sometimes that means that when a university is private is being granted by companies which means guided education…
In my country (Greece), Universities are still public but crisis in Economic system drives this field to crisis too. As a consequence, students doubt more and more about their education, nowadays.
In other words, I want to highlight that education must be separated by community and be focused on the scientific part its-self.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen. Therefore, students must criticize the system and not only believing in what teachers teach them. They have to be well informed about the currency and news, as well as the past and history in order to be prepared to criticize and decide to believe if university is or not in crisis.
To conclude, my opinion is that university’s education is being on crisis…

  184. Simona Martinkutė dice: Responder

Really, universities are in crisis today. Universities have to try to inspire and motivate the students to think different but not the same. They should be the home of knowledge, senses of national and cultural identities and give only various but not the specified directions to students of finding their ways, places in life. Moreover, I think, students are a little bit in crisis as well. High – technologies can both help and disturb the process of studying. Before (when high – tech were not so developed) students, people had to absorb as much information as they could but nowadays people don’t try to memorize because they can find it in the internet. And if student feels bored in class? Yes, the internet is vital in this situation. In this case, how much attention do student pay to subjects, to teachers? I think the answer is clear. So, I can name it endless story or vicious circle because politicians want to intrude into education’s affairs then teachers become angry and it more or less has influence on quality and finally students aren’t interested what happens in classes only in FB, Twitter and so on.

In my opinion, the first mission of universities should be to form the core of science. The second one should be to educate students having the soul of research instead of students learning by heart. The other mission shoud be to enable the freedom of science and the freedom of thoughts together. Nowadays, the administrative structure of universities start to resemble either govermental institution or partially private companies. The universities that depend on other institutions in terms of administration, cannot create a free environment for their students. These kinds of places are called «universities» but their function are not universal and so they have the characteristics of high schools. However, university should be a place where students both feel free and can easily achieve their objectives.

  186. After graduating from secondary school, many young people do not even know exactly what to study, their choices tend and professional studies courses or university. Most of the may choose to go abroad to work, because the budget has not been in areas which decreases each year and are unable to repay their studies. European University Association and the worst example of two years ago, revealing the Latvia, where the two-year period – from 2008. by 2010. year – higher education budget cut by 57%, but after this period has already been observed stability, and projections for next year are positive. This year, expressed suffered Lithuanian education, the reduction is almost 30%, slightly less – Portugal. As hard times Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain and Italy.
I believe that if students know what they want to learn, then his attitude will change studies. The best way to check whether the young person in his chosen profession he likes a «Shadow Day». Each year the Latvian secondary school are going to get acquainted with the most interesting profession, and switch to the new employee into the skin.
Great is when the studio manages to combine the practice, in the lectures held an exchange of views, as both sides are interested in in this topic and want to improve themselves. Latvian business world new employers prefer those new employees who have had experience in this field, so practice is needed.
Yes technology era has begun, but we have to follow up, because so our information is exchanged faster and more efficiently.
We, as young teachers should try to motivate own students and they pursue life objectives pursued and achievements.

  187. In my opinion possibility to cure University is stopping creating them as a formal way of education. It shouldn’t be something like: I’m studying law, I’m a student, I’ll be lawyer. Why in some countries studying is free, in some we have to pay, in other is free only if we are young. What does it mean? Older people are less useful? Cannot learn and shouldn’t working? Why it is not possible, to working and studying in that same time, I mean for example I have 40 years old, I working on some corporation but I want to learn something about biology, general biology. But I don’t want to studying it for 10 hours per day, for 3 years and moreover paying for eat. It means that I cannot learn something, I cannot improve my knowledge, myself. I can only working… University should be completely free institute where we can learn what we want, without ,,fields of studying», only with courses, general, specialized and other. Then people may learn what they want, with passion, with power, with new possibilities. If someone will not find a job, he can take another courses, if our employer will require from us to have some courses, we will not have to paying a lot of money for courses in private agency. More often after studies we have to taking a lot of courses, because if we have finished only some field of study, we cannot do nothing. More freedom in courses will give s opportunity to learning for all our live, to improve our possibilities, knowledge, humanity. Each one may manage his live as he want, it will be his will and his responsibility.

  188. Published video evokes in me a big skepticism. I know that all this is going on, but I haven`t throught much about that. It’s a big problem, that the students take education as a necessary evil that must complete to have graduated with a degree. Students don`t try to develop more in their skills, they only do the minimum, which is needed to complete school. Educational institutions are in this time a sort of factories for students with a degree.
Regarding technology, I think that is certainly good, accelerates and facilitates a lot of work. We should use it and not to resist it. On the other hand, it is clear that perfecting the technologies used in some cases brings disadvantages and it is rather counterproductive. It depends on the conditions.

  189. I think that the Universities are getting adapted to each other more and more. Since the Bachelor and Master system has been introduced in Germany, the interest of the individual students got lost. You have to study what everyone studies, it all is standarized. And if a student is not interested in a topic, how can he be expected to concentrate and have good marks, then? How should he have any fun about his studies? Even if the amount of students grows and grows, I think the variety of what to choose doesn’t grow at all – it rather contracts. If University becomes like school, how could an individual person train his own abilities?

    1. Dear Laura:
Very interesting this reflection and the things are happening in Germany.
      Regards. José Manuel Bautista.

  190. The crisis in education is perceived for a long time. Overcrowded classes, boring lectures, which seem to be not necessary and disconnected with a field of study you chose is normal. Students surfing on the internet rather than listening the teacher you can find everywhere, i think. But I’m not sure if that’s a real problem nowadays. For sure, in the past it was totally different, but not because of new technologies. In my opinion it was because of amount of people going for studies. In Poland, tens, a dozen or so years ago it wasn’t so popular to study. Only a few have higher degrees and they were professionalists in their sphere. What is different now? Now it’s obvious for everybody that after high school you have to go for studies. Even people who don’t have ambitions or they don’t really know what to do in their life, they go to the university and study anything, just to have a degree. But after graduation they are not specialists in their field. And they can «take place» of work somebody who has a really vocation to do that thing. So, maybe it should be solved in the way that before you are going for studies you have to carefully choose what exactly you want to do in your life, secondly make a lot of tests which will check if you really are giving to this and only after all of this you can study, because otherwise the number of students will be constantly increasing but the number of experts will not. It’s a real problem in my country I think and I hope somebody will lastly solve this problem.

  191. Very interesting video, it´s true the quality of the knowledge participate students and teachers. The lectures has most of students laptops, they don´t have it of take notes, but surf on internet. Another problem is than students are in college only numbers. On the other side, but for example, if a teacher only reads his lecture, it’s not interesting for the student. From the perspective of knowledge we can find guilt on both sides.
I don´t like that universities are increasingly influenced by policy. In our country are at the highest levels in the Department of Education people who don´t have knowledge about education at all. It´s not right. After all the Minister of Education can´t make a man who has a degree in medicine. I think that majority of skills should remain in the hands of university without the intervention politics.

  192. In this case, both students and professors are to blame. I think main problem for some students is the transition they have to go through, and by that I mean studying from high school to student life at university. In high school, most are used to get lesson from teachers, and thats it. In university you have to take responsibility for learning. Students have to prepare themself before lecture, and do their »homework» properly. Some students have also their priorities sorted out, you’ll always find students during lectures taking notes, and you’ll most likely find atleast 30% browsing on internet/ facebook.

Professors have to change their approach as well, they are used to talk about same subject every year. But they forget that there are new students sitting in the auditorium who have no clue.

  193. If you see the Video, you must have the thought in your mind, that both sides (students AND professors) in university have responsibility for learning something.
On the one hand the students have to emerge from their own lethargy: University isn’t school. Pupils are used to get the things they have to learn from the teacher. They got everything told by their teacher, which is important for their school career. This should be end at least when they start their academic studies. They should start to use their own head. If they hear a bad lecture from a professor, they should emerge from their lethargy and aquire the learning matter on their own.
Of course, on the other hand I can understand students, who does not pay attention in a lecture, when a professor only take a reading from his/her power point presentation or altogether he/she gives a boring a lecture.
What I want to say is, that it is an ambivalent issue. Both sides have a responsibility for achieving the aim: Learning, autonomous thinking …

  194. The Video describes a lot of negative Aspects of sitting in a University. It is important to reflect about the sequenze of lectures. First of all the professors must attain that the students have the interest to follow the lecture. If a professor only read his power point presentation without explanations or dialog than i can understand that some students doesn’t come. But the student also has a self-responsible, if he is only busy with other things than maybe his exam will be bad.
The problem of overcrowded classes results from the reason, that more and more pupils decide for himself to go to a University. The universities can stop this increment through a higher study fee, but that would be social injustice.

  196. Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. To some people, university teaching should focus on students’ individual skills on a practical level, while some claim that universities, as academic institutions, should merely maintain theoretical knowledge teaching. I, personally, side with the former viewpoint. Arguments will be raised to strengthen the rectitude of the very practice in terms of students’ study intention and their future career development.

On the one hand, the main purpose for the majority of students who continues university study is to obtain graduation certificates and some other relevant qualifications, which are essential for their future job-hunting. On the other hand, only by learning from practical experience, can students adapt to their future workplaces more easily and promptly, and by means of that performing better in their career. On the contrary, if only theoretical knowledge is done by universities, students may end up managing to adjust themselves to meet job requirements after graduation. In other words, for the sake of students’ future career development, practical knowledge and skills should be provided when they are in campus.
In short, the main task for universities is training a group of people with practical knowledge and professional skills. Therefore, the teaching conducted in universities should be oriented towards individuals’ future development.

  197. I think the main problem is: overcrowded classes. There’s no communication between teacher and student. Offcourse the teacher don’t know the name of the student, there are more then 200 people in those classes. I think also that you know the teacher is not paying attention on you, so if you don’t want to follow the class, you just take your laptop, cellphone our Ipod with you and you have something to do during the class. Technology is good in certain ways, but can be really bad for the education too. Even now I have problems to concentrate me because I want to do other stuff, checking my facebook, listening to music. But i have to do my homework. It’s necessary to graduate. But technology make it really hard for the student of today. We have so many distractions now, so we would not study.

  198. It is very obvious that universities are in the crisis in most of countries around the world. There are so many reasons behind that. First off all the difference between generations getting bigger and bigger. That’s makes hard the communication between teachers and students. The biggest reason behind that is technological changing. New generation can follow that changes most of time but lots of teacher can not. New social sites the students created some new language and started to lose their own language so that gives the teachers hard time to understand their students. On the other hand, student’s acts and minds has been changed so much recently. On the past days teachers were so important for society and should be respected all the time. Nowadays new generation do not respect anything. Most of them care only how they can have fun. they don’t read book or newspaper, lots of them don’t even have purpose of living. They want to earn money from the shortest way. That kinds of students destruct other students who really want to be educated. Another reason that cause crisis at the university is the changed mentality about education system. Education has became a business in that century. That increased the tool that we use at the school but it also decreased the quality of education. Being educated should be the purpose by itself. As long as we can not put that idea in our students’s mind, crises is going to get bigger and bigger by time.

  199. I still think the main issue is that our surroundings has become way more fun than what actually happens inside the university. I think we want to learn as much as we did before. But I for example like to learn by watching intresting TED-vidoes or do own research. If I want information I will google it and have the answer in a matter of seconds. Im not learning as good if I plow thru a big lump of text. Right now Im listening to a Podcast about the history of Europe made by a professor that speaks in a really intresting way and makes his speach like a story. I have learn more about the history of Europe from this podcast then what i did sitting reading books in class at the gymnasium. I can listen when i want to and the professor has a way involving me in the history. Im not saying that podcast will save the university…..but I think its in that direction we shall go. More interaction!!

  200. I believe that the programmes and education that students are studying today tend to be extremely broad which enable the students to work in many different areas. However, the broadening of these programmes also increase competion among the students in the market, on the contrary it also opens up for different opportunities within different fields.I really believe what they say in the movie; what we study today might not even exist in the future, and if it will it might develop into diffrent directions and probably be named something else than the original name. Although, competition among the students can only be fair if the studies at the universities are free as I deem that no one should have to pay for gaining knowledge. Everyone should have access to the same knowledge and diffretent universities should not have a higher status than others because of the fact that their intution fees are higher.

Regarding the fact that students have problems to concentrate is a proof of the lectures being uninteresting, and that the students are to distracted by new technoogy today. The universities must reconstruct their way of teaching in certain circumstance and perhaps include more modern technology into the education, and current events. However, it is important that technology does not replace the realtions between the students and the teachers. There must still be classes held in classrooms and not only online, and it must be possible to have mutual realtion between the students and the teachers in real life. It is also more riviting to learn if you have classmate that you can share the same experience with.

  201. University studies should be fun and interesting since you are studying for what you later are going to work with. It is important that you feel it is of value to you. But since universities are controlled the focus is on results and not the pleasure of learning. It is not mandatory to study at the university but if you do not, you will have difficulties finding a job (at least in Sweden). That is why people might start studying because they feel like they have to even thou they actually do not want to. When you are studying for the “wrong” reasons the learning outcomes will not be the same as if you studied because that you wanted to. How good will that be when they come out at the labour market and have no interest in what they are doing? Society has difficulties accept diversity and I believe that is one of the bigger issues. There will be no success if you do not trust people.

  202. Vinka Arancibia Duran . dice: Responder

My thoughts are that basically you have no idea on how the future in education will look like. The things that you study today, the different science and specialties in different areas does not secure you a job. It could be that area does not exist anymore or that everything has change and you are no longer qualified to work in that area. I also think that how are you supposed to feel motivated to get a higher degree if there is such a big pressure from the society and government. The expectations of the people are very high but the people can’t expect much back. Sometimes it feels like that the different governments/countries are in a huge competition and the ones that lose the most are the regular people.

  203. For me again very nicely done video. Studens accuratelly describe problems of today´s universities such classes are overcrowded, approach of the teacher is impersonal and they have lots of thick book for study. And how is it with the technology? I think that each university should be open for new technologies but on the other side, here should be same limit. How bad example can I describe you our university, which substitute examiner for computers. It mean for us no oral examination and I find it very impersonal. The effort in classes can not be counted to final marks, because we are testing by computers and then we are more pasive in classes.
And what about FB in classes? I mean that depends on students. There are those who rather listen to the teacher and on the other hand those who sit in the class just for have attendace and prefere study alone at home.

  204. I personally believe no one should pay any direct fee for going to university as it is in Sweden (books are exceptions). This to eliminate differences, all should have a shot to study. And the thing when it comes to books is you do not often need the book to understand the topc becasue there is technologies such as computers, laptop, I – pad etc whereyou can find almost the same information (on internet). In other words, technology is good for the people learnings. For me books are waste of paper! However that universities become key institutions both for the production of knowledge, and to strengthen a sense of national and cultural identity is good, but it is according to me bad that the politicians have so much power over the universitiesl. Politics and government should intervene less, and universities should step forward!

  205. At present we have many technical achievements, which helps us manage daily responsibilities and duties toschool or to work. Honestly, can you imagine your life without a computer or cell phone? Quite difficult. Of course it’s not impossible, sometimes I turn off my phone and laptop for a few days and ignore the world. I feel better then. It works. One feels more contact with the previous world. I do not even remember the last time I read the book. I cannot, I have internet where can I find everything in a few seconds. Sometimes I miss times when I went to school with a backpack full of books and workbooks, writing with a pen on paper, rewriting notes. That time has passed. But the fact remains that it will save money to buy books and workbooks, on the contrary, we are deprived of more physical contact with classmates and teachers. Here in Huelva, I quite like that in the classroom, teachers are still trying to ask questions and receive answers. There is contact. On our Universe no one cares about us. You attend a classes – well, you do not – your problem. Want to exam – Write presentation, term paper, write test. And finally a teacher at the end still does not know your name.
Everything has its pros and cons. The world is progressing and we are with him. It must come to terms with it. Nothing will ever be the same again. Only that the world really ended 20.12.2012. But how would it be then about the education and about the world we cannot know.

  206. Several years ago we really had to remember things, nowadays we can look everything up somewhere and there are millions of books or internet pages that give us informations. But we don’t know which information is important for us at the moment and where to begin with reading. Also in university the teachers don’t really talk about anything because they say you can all read it on the internet. Where is the education gone?? I really miss discussions in class, group works that inspire me and so on. But in my opinion we shouldn’t forget that university is something else than school: when I decide to study something, and I hope nowadays most of us study because they want to not because they have to, it’s my job, and I love it, to read, to talk to people, to educate myself. When there is no opportunity to talk to the teacher in class then go to his office, write an email… I am really happy that I have the opportunity to study so I use this opportunity to make the best out of. In the way I want to learn, because I am an adult and I can decide for myself how much effort and time I want to spent and what interests me. I also have friends who spent their time on facebook during class but why do they go there then?

  207. Yes, modern technology help us to very easy get to the new information of all of the world. It can our life makes easier, but also it makes us lazier. When the modern technology didn’t exist, people strive too much when they want to get something. I think, we can´t compare with them, we get a study results without so big effort. Before, they were looking for new information so long time and we? We write the key word in the google and at once we have a lot of information. And when we get it, we are not looking for this anymore. The truth is, that bring my own laptop to the class is very big advantage, I can quickly and easy make notes from lesson. But on the other hand, it averts our attention. In fact, if I have to calculate how many times, when I was in the lesson, I checked my facebook, I will be surprised. Moreover, how many student during them study have never seen the real book? How many students do seminar work just like copy of the internet? Then, how is the sense of everything? We have to thinking about how to make modern technology our friend, no the enemy of our personal development.

  208. What caught my attention in the movie were those written papers that I could relate to myself. To name a few of them it was one with how many students there were in the same class and another one was the paper with how less percent of the teachers that knew one of the students name. These two examples can be risk factors for lesser knowledge in the education in the universities. In my first semester in my home university we were 200 persons in the same class. These overturned the situation of learning. The students were asking each other instead of asking the teacher when they didn’t understand and that led to higher noise and that you can’t hear what the teacher is talking about. I also want to give the teachers at the university here in Huelva a tribute because of their ability to remember our names.

  209. Are universities in crises because of the influence of outer forces? Probably. But let’s see it in the comparison with earlier times, when, for example, in Soviet Union curriculum was completely under control of the government… Therefore, while still feeling some political influences upon universities, modern universities are to be considered autonomous.
As for the knowledge factor that universities should have – this is where same changes have to be made. Using facebook.com in lectures, while professor writes on a chalkboard? This shows the ironical nature of technologies that can be the greatest tool to improve the quality and speed of learning process but at the same time can deteriorate it. And we students, being part of university, should participate in arranging this matter and fully consider university as a learning place; therefore, solving at least this problem.

  210. What I think about technology? Nowadays we have a lot of modern technological things which can make on one hand our life easyer and on the other hand things are not as brilliant as we would like. If I compare my childhood and childhood nowaday you can really see the diference. And it is only a few years ago. In the past we had a different values, diferrent way of life. When I see now childreen playing with nintendo and other hand games I really think that they missed very important part of childhood..
Technology in the schooly is very improved as we can see powerpoint presentations, facebook participation for everyonne in the class. It is really going worse. You are somehow forced to use a computer, writting seminar work, being on a facebook to follow the themes and this may reduce the quality of lessons. In primary school in Slovenia children have to use computers for a homework to do some tasks or something. When I was in primary school I didn’t use computer for school and honestly I didn’t missed a lot and I do not feel any consequences now.

  211. My spanish is really poor, and google translator is not the best so i was more interesting in video which catch me because of way of shooting. It was really good idea . i like the video and also it catch me because of informations. on the one hand I think technology is not soo bad, brings us a lot. but on the other hand it depends about the student if they can life without faceebook in lesson, if they are interesting and want study. because lot of student dodnt pay attention in class, using phone, listening music or chating and than they have to study again at home. But what can we do if the teacher just reading powerpoint presentation and nothing else, no more information? we can read it alone at home.

I think all of us students can relate to that video…
It’s a shame the money I wasted on books I did not use at my university at home.
Furthermore, the technology (I am mainly referring to the internet) makes me quite lazy to be honest.
Concerning teaching methods, what I’ve seen so far teachers are getting more skilled in reading 1 hour and 30 minutes from a powerpoint presentation…
Others, however, make you engage more in a practical way by sharing relevant information with you online. It might be just the passion you have for your subject in the way you teach.
The same counts for the students regarding their level of diligence in studying.

Technology will change the world. But in a good or in a bad way?
In my opinion in a bad way. The changing technology is part of a changing world, of course we as people have to keep up with these changes, but it has made our lifes so much easier and we became so much lazier because of these changes.

In the years befor us people didn’t had the changes to use the types of technology we know today and they were able to do what ever they wanted to do to. They were much more challenged then we are today. Even little children now a days wouldn’t know what to do if they didn’t had a tv or a computer or now there is a Ipad, Iphone or Ipod for children as well. They aren’t able anymore to enjoy the little/small things in life and that is a pitty.

Especially now the children need to already learn in kindergarden how they have to work with technology and that is a must because if they don’t learn it now they will not be able to handle the changing world.
I see it with my parents and granparents they grew up in a world without all the technology and in my opinion they had a much greater childhood then the kids will have now a days. they learned to enjoy everything and were happy with every opportunity got.

Students now are much leasier than before ( of course not everyone) but in general.
The students now use technology as a way to break out of the life they’re having. For studying everything is made much easier.
As for the teachers some teachers make an advantage of technology, they don’t have any personal contact with their students anymore. Everything is being communicated through email or other technologic possibilety’s. And I think taht as a teacher it is really important to have a relationship with your students because you’re the person they should turn to if they need help, but if everything is going through internet stuudents may not have the courage to start to speak to you in person because they don’t really know you.

Of course it is not all technology’s fault, a lot of students are just not interested in what the teachers are telling and just use technology as a way to evoid everything.

I agree with most of the things in this video. But I also think that many students create these issues for themselves. You could get more out of these classes by actually paying attention and not going on Facebook. If it’s so hard for you than don’t bring your laptop to class. So don’t complain about how much you have to pay for your books if you even not paying attention in class, it’s always much easier to complain than to see the problem is also a little because of yourself. I know if I would bring my laptop to class I will not listen to my teacher and also probably would be on Facebook, so I don’t bring my laptop with me. But I do understand the fact that it’s not fair they have to pay this much for their books. I think the government has to do something about it, so everyone has the opportunity to follow the classes they want to do. Now I’m not speaking about my country (Belgium) but more about England and America.. here they have to pay so much just to inscribe themselves in to school. So here the pore people don’t even get a chance to go to university, to have a diploma and to have a great job. In this case the gap is getting bigger and bigger between pore and rich.

  216. My comment will be based on the video i’ve seen cause it’s much easier for me to understand this, then the google translate text.
I don’t think it is fair to limit or make it easier for minorities to attend and pay for college. Is it based on their family income or just because their heritage.
About the technology. I think if every teacher would be a wonderful teacher with good intentions for his students, then technology would be great. Only, what i see now is that technology is on the way to replace education, not enhancing it. There are so many teachers now that are ignoring being personal with the students, teaching at online colleges. They don’t care so much about the students as their own reputation…as long as enough people pass who cares? I think, in this way, technology gets used in a very bad way. Nowadays it gets used a lot to make the job easier of the teacher, but it can also be a good way to share so much more information with their students. So technology can get used in a really good or really bad way, it depends the intention of the teacher and the students.

  217. I completely understand the fear of political forces taking over the system of education and influencing the programmes to such extent that we don`t even have a choice and say anymore. But the problem is not the university`s betrayal of its constitutive characteristics; the real problem is the impossible competition with ever-developing technological inventions. A student asks knowledge from the university, while secretly updating his status on Facebook during the class? Don`t bring your laptop to class if you cannot concentrate! The problem begins with an individual – pay attention in the class, propose your suggestions in student council or organize international projects if you want the university to be: universal, autonomous and giving knowledge. It`s up to students to change the offer (programmes, seminars, etc.) of university!
