Knowledge and education as problematic values

The new epoch, which has ripened before us, possesses, in a qualitative and quantitative consideration, a series of singularities which are worth mentioning.

On the one hand, the frame of present-day episthemological considerations, which, in post-modern times, are based on a radical pessimism. J.F. Lyotard (1981) considers that there is no possible theory because nothing can be generalised, since thought, knowledge, ethics, history, the being, as “evidences of the difference” are always being reconsidered. In this sense, from T. Kuhn’s theory of the paradigms onwards, the demand for a system of sciences gives place to historicity, and then, it opens to its mere verisimilitude.

This new epoch means for the science of knowledge what has been called “investigation traditions” (L. Laudan) or “episthemological anarchism” (P. Feyerabend) (Díaz, 1990), which can be partially translated in the educational sector as a scheme of tolerance for the diversity of representations of teaching and learning. The question of value has not been introduced yet, but, in case it was introduced, it would mean to question the validity of these different representations of the analysis of the processes of teaching and learning.

Joshua and Dupin (1993) treat this topic regarding the teaching-learning processes as part of a complex structure, not lineal, which supposes the gathering of three logics: the teacher’s logic, the student’s logic and the subject’s logic. The characteristics of these logics and the interaction between them will give structure to the teaching-learning processes and will characterise the kind of curriculum involved.

Despite recognising these three parts and the new realities which appear after their interrelation, and admitting that it comes from a constructivist conception of the curriculum, this tridimensional view possesses a certain tinge of despotism and dogmatism and creates the following problematic situations:

1. The problem of originality. Many experts and teachers think that constructivism is the last novelty of the “science of teaching and learning” and that it has nothing to do with the past, whose most meaningful elements are connected to conservatism, tradition, authority and, to a certain extent, what is reactionary.

2. The consideration of the ultimate paradigm. The initial problem makes many experts think that constructivism is the last and ultimate theory. The last jump has been done, the last paradigmatic revolution is over, not only in quantity but also in quality. There is no future, there is nothing beyond constructivism.

Another important question which the global analysis of the educational systems is that they do not usually separate themselves from the consideration of the obsolescence of knowledge and its impact in the curricula and programmes (Tunnermann, 1996).

This question can be understood by studying the problem, whose origin is the evaluation of knowledge from the different institutions which generate knowledge and information, including the universities, and by admitting that the new paradigms that appear coexist in a minimal and fragmentary unity of tolerance.

The new demands to the systems of education correspond with a series of elements which need to be analysed critically:

a) Changes in the structure of learning.
b) Changes in the traditional ways of organising, dividing and specialising knowledge.
c) Changes in the circulation of knowledge and in the way it is appropriated.
d) Changes in the social roles of the professions.

These changes has provoked a situation in which teachers and pupils are immersed, but in which they do not find any support. Teachers, the key for the generation and spreading of knowledge, present in their personal dimension, several realities which cannot be ascribed to the purely techno-didactic.

In my point of view the problem is not ONLY with teachers. Of course, on one hand many of them are boring for students, can not engage children’s attention, bring their personal problems to the class etc…But the way how they teach is the way that curriculum says. They can’t change it even if they would like to, because if they stop to follow it they can be punish from university or kick out. Maybe lot of them know that some subjects are focused on some informations which are not that important for pupils in that age and to spend a time on something usable and more important will be better and beneficial for them, but they can’t because educational system has some rules, which they have to follow. So I guess that first of all is important to change the system all over the world, system, that will educate children to be ready for their future, their following steps in live and familiarise them with informations that will be useful for them and which they can remember in the current age the best. This system should be based on motivation for future. And this kind of renovation can maybe bring different attitude and interest also from teacher’s side.

  2. The paradigm shift is in a way a social circle. Researchers like Kuhn or Knorr-Cetina pointed out that the problem lies in the lack of honesty and lack of will to search for truth and nothing else but truth. However, this is what science is actually about, to find the truth in everything that surrounds us. Kuhn’s perspective focusses on the whole, whereas Knorr-Cetina goes into detail and investigated how individual researchers do their research and which results they published afterwards. She called it ‘Labor-Opportunismus’ (laboratory opportunism), which means that scientists often make decisions or selection, depending on the situations.
For as long as there will be science, science will go on. There will always be people, who will pursue sciences, to whom it does not matter if there are people who argue about constructivism. People like Kuhn, Feyerband or Knorr-Cetina make critical remarks, but these critical remarks are necessary to wake people up to show that epistemology is about the truth. In this sense, this article is a contribution to this matter.

  3. I think we have to consider what is good for the children, and it is not all the time what the curriculum says. Unfortunately the curriculum determinate for the teachers what they have to teach, which won’t be enough for the future life, when the children pass into the real life. In my opinion the curriculum should contains more practical training, because it has got a lot of connection with the theoretical education. It is fact, that the science is a very important thing, but to create new ideas we need some creativity also, and if the education make bounds to the fresh, young, efficient and acceptant/impressionable mind, it won’t be working.

  4. I see big problems in education because teachers do not adapt their system of teaching to a group of students only to the program and a final examination. Any group of people and students is different and should have different standards of nauzczania, but not always the teacher wants to spend time on extra time spent on improving the curriculum for the next year. According to me, the Ministry of Education should ensure that the improvement in the situation, because they have the most power over the program.

  5. Teachers have to abide by the curriculum they are told to teach in their classroom. The opinions of whether its good enough differ greatly but it can’t be changed overnight. It would be an extremely timely process which is why instead of chaining it, improvements are trying to be made. Although the curriculum being taught may not be the most valuable, the teacher him/herself can maximise their pupils potential within that classroom by varying the methods they use to teach it. If they focus on an enjoyable, happy environment in the classroom then the pupils will be more likely to enjoy what they are learning in a conformable environment created by their teacher. A creative and innovative approach towards teaching is being encouraged more and more and I feel like it not only benefits the teacher but the children also.

As much as it is important to continuously look at how education can be improved, it is possible that too much can have a negative effect. Teachers may have to always be learning and adapting to new implementations and this can cause them to stress or lose confidence in their teaching methods and abilities. Sometimes it is better to have freedom in your education and not place too much emphasis in the future. It can be better to take each day as it comes at an early age due to inconsistent learning speeds. Knowledge does not always mean education, for example education can come from experience rather than knowledge gained for a teacher.

I have in this article feel like there there was no more room for originality. They go out of the method constructivism, which is currently the method of teaching in educational renewal. It is important that you continue to look around at what is best for the child.
As a teacher you have to be very flexible in its approach to innovate education, something that creates even more pressure on the shoulders of the teacher. I just think that there is always something that can be innovative, it is only to the school board to offer to offer. Proper way of teaching the correct structure.

In my opinion we have some big problems in education system and it is not so easy to solve them. We need a lot of changes. Teachers in the classes, need to follow the plan, realize what is written in the curriculum. They don’t do any changes, just repeat the same things every year. Mostly as is the knowledge required for the final exams. This kills our creativity. We need to follow the way of thinking of some person who wrote the key of the answers. Often we learn things, that we can use only during the exam, but never in our life. Like – learn, pass and forget. However, a lot of depends on the teacher, sometimes even the most boring subject, if is taught in a interesting way can attract the attention of the students. A lot of times during the class the sentence “oh, I see you are so bored with my class, if you are not interested you can go out” have been spoken. The problem is that probably the teacher never asked himself that maybe students are bored because he taught in a boring way. The problem is that, probably nothing will change, till more people, teachers, government will notice the trouble, that we need some changes, and start to cooperate with each other. And notice that sometimes is good to listen to the students and ideas that they have..

  9. The biggest problem in today’s education system is that teachers are required to follow the curriculum. Therefore, most of what they are teaching are the requirements for the exams and nothing that pipes the interests of the students. During my time spent in high school, I was always taught the materials that was going to be shown in the final papers, once that was over, my knowledge on this particular topic was never used again and was soon later forgotten. I find this an extraordinary waste of time as most of the stuff that was being taught was interesting but the teachers lack of engaging attitude never piped my interest long enough in order to continue it. This can be compared to now, where in one of my business class in the UK, I had a very unique teacher who did not follow the traditional method of most teachers but was quite flexible in the way he taught. Sooner than later, I found that my interest in the subject kept growing and growing as the days went by. Each week, I was attending every lesson and looking forward to the next batch of materials that I could absorb. This is a prime example of a teacher that can relate to students and can understand that following the curriculum is not always the right way of teaching.

  10. All of the teachers have to teach what cirriculum says. Sometimes the problem is that they cannot teach, speak interesting. They just repeat the same things, word by word as in the book. So, we can just read it at home and that’s the same. Not every teacher was born to teach. That’s why for me, before becoming a teacher, someone should do some selection. That’s nonsens when teacher is dry as a dust, that’s waste of money paying someone like he and waste of students’ time who wait just for the end of the class. During this time they could do a lot of others usefuls activities. Second problem is that, studends not always can develop their passions, abilities. In scholl are basics subjects and sometimes they have to pay for their passion, hobbies. Ballet, other dancing class; languages which are not popular, sports like karate, box- are these things fairly commun in schools? I don’t think so. So, we should take the matters into the ours own hands, decide what we like, in what we are good and strive for pefrection. What’s a pity that sometimes talented people are wasted because of lack of money.

  11. In my opinion, for many reasons, the state of society has reached a stage where it is more critical than ever to educate people in the traditional values of their culture. In recent years there has been considerable discussion about whether it is the responsibility of schools to impart values education. l think, there is growing pressure for all teachers to become teachers of values, through modelling, discussing and critiquing values-related issues. There are many opportunities to teach the principles of values education through existing subjects and topics. The purpose is to suggest one of the many ways in which values education can be incorporated into existing. But most of all the existing curriculum. To us today, in some countries due to the quality of curriculum issues are not given training.

  12. I think the best would be that the teachers can choose what they want to teach but with some restrictions. Indeed, teachers must teach what the curriculum told them to teach which is a shame because the pupils are not going to learn some important things that the teacher can’t teach. Currently the schools and the parents prefer to teach generaly the scientist subject.but I think the logic and artistic subject have to be more balanced because it is very important for personal development but also for the future profession. In fact, in most of the job it’s essential to have some imagination and good idea.

  13. One of the main problems that teachers face today is that they are restricted by the curriculum, often teachers are seen to be just teaching the requirements of the exam and not digging deeper into the topic itself which would perhaps encourage students’ interest. Due to the fact that the economy and education itself is constantly and rapidly evolving rather than teaching the curriculum maybe the teachers need to take a different approach and teach how to think and be inquisitive, for example, in my 6th form education we had compulsory lessons on a topic called ‘Critical Thinking’ this forced us to be more inquisitive and to take things and break them down, analyse them and help with reasoning. Teaching is both an art and a science which teachers have different styles of teaching and theories of work, in my personal opinion my education in the UK I have had a plethora of different teachers and I will always remember the material taught to me in an interesting way.

  14. The main problem for the teachers is that they have to teach what the curriculum say! I think that a lot of teachers want to teach also other stuff which is very important for the future. But if they don´t teach like the curriculum the school authority punish them. Often also the parents want that their children learn more mathematics instead of art for example. There is a lot of pressure on the teachers. During my courses at the university I recognized that that I have to cancel a lot of ideas what I wanted to teach the children. A lot of power from above which don´t have the profession like me say what I have to teach. There is only a little space for freedom.

  15. Information and education in values are problematic nowadays. How information should be given? What logic should be used in education? etc.Article 3 of the logic is important.Teacher, student and subject logic.Because of this logic for the creation of authenticity in education has to be known.Originality is to create a phenomenon unlike anything. So the arts.At this point I think it combines science and art.New ideas can not be produced because without information.
With the information learned new and different ideas appear in the human brain. But art can occur with new ideas.Different and original creations. As a result of domestic creativity upgrade should be a unique learning paradigm.

Nowadays teachers do not have a word or the power to enforce what they want and how children learn , they must follow the school curriculum , which is good on one hand , if a teacher is passive , but if it is a good teacher , it’s a shame , because he can only pass on to children theoretical knowledge and the practical aspects missing. The teacher also has the ability to give more time to individual students who need it.I think that teachers should be more creative and positive to the children in the class, thereby allowing the children to load it with the same feedback. Thus is formed as positive thinking teachers and pupil. In 2011, the Czech Republic, the government introduced a state high school diploma implemented in all secondary schools, where all students have the same opportunities. I do not think it’s a good example because student of Gymnázium have the same opportunity as students of vocational schools who have one week of school instruction and practice one week, it still turns, so they spend in school, 50% of the time. I think that it should be changed because it is now very little success to overcome the state exams. Video of the division of science and art were interesting, they are really two different disciplines.

The science of teaching and the art of teaching are very different. The analysis of teaching and learning is a complex structure, it does not accomodate for all students as everyone as a different way of learning, some students learn better by doing practical assignments instead of by the book. The curriculum is a set structure that only teaches the actual subject for example in maths the curriculum is a set structure and shows no room for a teacher to experiment the art of teaching it. The student logic is to remember but each person learns in different ways so the teachers logic is to make sure the student learns the subject and remembers it. Science and creativity should be mixed in order to accomodate for all students and make the subject more interesting so the person has a better understanding. There are so many different social media websites nowadays that students are easily distracted so teachers should teach in relation to things students understand so they will remember it better

My opinion is that creativity is already repressed in the curriculum. Teachers have to follow the curriculum which is, in my opinion, useless. Schools give us too much theoretical knowledge, which it is forgotten too fast. If the education system would be build more on practice work and less theoretical knowledge, i think children would be more creativity stimulated. Technology is progressing every day and the whole world is changing, but education system is almost the same like it was ten years ago. And that is the problem. Nowadays we need more and more creative people, so I completely agree that combining art and science is the key to better knowledge.

  19. Almost none of the ten most wanted or searched professions today, didn’t exist ten years ago. We can ask ourselves, for what do we prepare our children in school? This means that what they learn now, will not be useful in the future. Children must learn to think, and not to remember information that was important thousand years ago. In schools there is too many reproductive learning, because the curriculum is composed so. Useful knowledge brings good results, that’s way we should use it more. Combining art and science is excellent way for achieving this goal. Personally, I was very impressed by Waldorf education system, where students learn mathematics with the help of art and history, and they are enjoying during it.

  20. Neither the education side first theoretical information is coming.Because of theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge is always ahead. I think today’s technology to refute it. People are theoretical information technology evolves without looking to implement. For example, today a new version of the smart phones come out every day.How many people have read the operating instructions before you start to use it do you think. We all know that there is very little. Or if any one have any problems we read user manual. which is important in such a case, we generate practical solutions. This situation depends on our intellectual sophistication of our skills. We take our skills and intellectual education is the sum of the contribution that we make to ourselves.

  21. Is really important what this article is about, especially nowadays. I agree with that art and science are connected. To develop something and to make something we need not only knowledge but also an idea. Unfortunately the problem is that teachers are giving us too much theoretical knowledge instead of practice. We need to find the perfect balance between this two. Is necessary to know how to use theory in different situations in our everyday life. Teachers should look for the best way to give their knowledge to students. Should find ways to encourage students to use mainly self-thinking and force them to act independently. I think in most of the countries we have a big problem with educational system, that is why it must be changed, as soon as possible, to help future generations.

  22. Today’s children and young people are not encouraged to learn and use creativity .A lot of students simply don’t have the time. After the hours of homework assigned by teachers, some are into sports – which is the smartest thing to do if someone is athletic since they can at least hope for an athletic scholarship for college since they pay more than any academic. Also not everyone has the perfect home life with a maid to take care of everything – students have stuff at home to do as well. Those old enough to have a job often have to take one to help out. This ends up with absolutely no free time during the week and a little on weekends where honestly the kid should be free to be a kid.

  23. I think that nowdays education system need a general changes. Nowdays where are so many opportunities to learn diffrently. There are so many students with great ideas but it is really hard to realize them if there isint any support of University or profesors.
I think that there has to be one general education system in all countries because than eveyone can get good education no matter where they live. The main problem in education system is old model of teaching and thinking. There are some teachers who arent really reconciled with nowdays tehnology and methods of learning so «the teacher’s logic» will be much more diffrent than» the student’s logic» because students wanted to learn more interactive and intresting way.

In our society is science connected with profit, success and buisness and art with free time and amusement. Money from the goverment flows mostly in the research of science and others are untended. Maybe that’s the reason why science subjects at schools mostly well-respected and art subjects not. In Austria for example it is not necessary to change the curriculum to make both kinds of subjects equal. The idea of teachers to this topic have to change and the instruction should be equal. It’s also possible to involve the subjects it to each other or teach it together. The curriculum is not so strict, so it’s possible to create ideas on my own and involve them.

  25. Education is forever evolving and adopting, much faster than individuals can learn… Entirely. The idea of having an education system that is complete and perfect, seems obscene. Education is more a life long journey, with students and teachers adopting and learning new curriculums from time to time. In my own eyes I believe the best education system is one that is most beneficial to the student, one that is most useful and teaches the student to live a productive and understanding future. In Northern Ireland it’s an exact model for why education structures need to change, too often is politicians the dictators in choosing the education agenda. The teacher knows much better the needs of individual students, it should be flexible and allow for the teacher to cater to their students on a much more understanding approach. Allowing a professional some space to create a more important education service seems much better. Education must change with times and the every changing world, but it needs to be practice to the students who receive it. Hopefully time will soon change systems.

  26. Who decides what assignment and assessment each student should take as part of their educational journey and what suits each student best? In the United Kingdom these decisions are made at top level and offer no assistance for any student who may struggle with numerous tests three hours long at any one time. The only option to assess a pupils ability is through formal testing. I feel that this way of testing pupils does not show off the subjects logic or the pupils logic to the best of their ability. This is catering to the teachers who spend the three terms of the school year filling the pupils heads with information so that when it comes to the end of the year and test time, the pupil will hopefully be able to recall some information told to them five or six months previous and write it quickly onto an answer booklet so it can be marked and then a grade given. I feel that if the pupils logic or the subjects logic are to be fully explored there needs to be a change in the assessment routines of many educational establishments.

  27. Sandra Maloversnik dice: Responder

Nowadays there is nearly no freedom for teachers what to teach to the children. They have to follow the curriculum and only have freedom in how they do it. Nearly everything is mandatory. The teachers teach what they have to teach and the students only commit it to memory and the most of the things they won`t remember after the school year. Here a lot of changes are necessary. Children should get the opportunity to create something. It is needless to teach them something and after a year they won`t remember it. They need to connect things with others or need to try them out. I thing it would be very important that the pupils get the chance to connect what they already learnt with the reality. They need experience.

  28. The purpose of education is to share our knowledge with others. A great teacher can impart a deep understanding of a subject to students effectively and with passion and hope, in turn, that in doing so those young people will be inspired to teach others. After I watched this video, it strikes me how vital it is to custom both science and creativity. Each day the world is changing more and more and new ideas and concepts are being spread. In today’s society, I feel that the teacher sticks to a certain curriculum and does not create his/hers teaching style to suit the student’s needs. I think that teachers should be more creative in a classroom which benefits the students more which in turn students will become more creative. In Ireland, teachers are talking about changing the curriculum. For example the Junior Certificate, that will become more assignment based than a final exam. I think this is a more effective style of teaching, as students have more time to immerse in what is going on. Hence they get a better understanding than just sticking to a curriculum based program. Relating to this example in Ireland it is clear that the traditional values of teaching are chaining for the better. Creativity in the school system is materializing.

  29. I think the video was really interesting about the division of art and science. I agree that art and science are completely different. Science explores and makes available facts about the universe, while arts attempt to exposing to everyone those special facts that normally are only available to a particular person. I think that a lot of the problem is down to curriculum. In its organizational aspect the curriculum is an authoritative prescription for the course of study of a school or system of schools. In their traditional form, such prescriptions set out the content to be covered at a grade level or in a course or sequences of courses, along with recommended or prescribed methods of teaching. Teachers are given a curriculum in which they are required to have completed in a certain time. I sometimes think that this is not effective because you do not learn outside the box you only learn what is needed to be completed in the curriculum the teacher is given. In some subjects I think that there is too much theory involved and little practice and example. If there were to be new teaching methods introduced I think it would help if there were changes to be added in the structure of learning. For example, in mathematics there is certain topics you study that you do not use in everyday life, but they need to be covered because they’re part of the curriculum.

  30. I really liked the video. Even though it’s from 2002 we are facing today the same problems than over 10 years ago – science and arts should really collaborate and not be separated. I think it would be really a great opportunity to develop ideas not only with brain but also with creativity.
As it was said in the video: ‘Science provides an understanding of a universal experience and arts provide a universal understanding of personal experience.’
This is so true and I hope we get to do just that.
Especially in school, I think it would be a great idea, because if pupils only learn the stuff that it is written in the school books, they will not remember it for a long time. But if they had to bring in their own ideas and think creativitely about assignments, I’m sure they would remember it a great deal longer.

  31. When we are borned, we have knowledge. Educaiton gives shapes our knowledges. Educaiton contributes more knowledge and we develop our brains. But, if we consider our education systems, Are they enough for everyone ? Teachers follow their curriculums but I think everybody doesn’t have same capability. I think education system should change. It shouldn’t be based on memorizing. Teachers give informations and students just memorize their teachers knowledges. They don’t create anything. So, I think if we want to have intellectual generations, firstly we should change our education systems.

  32. Karolina Brodowska dice: Responder

I think the problem is in curriculum, which teachers must strictly hold. They still have tolerance for diversity of teaching, but usually they don’t try to use it, to bring their own ideas to the class, get attention of students in different way as always and stimulate creativity in them. They give us too much purely theoretical knowledge, which often is never use in practice. I also agree that art and science should be connected to develop cleverness and be able to skillfully implement our ideas in life. That’s why we should concentrate on developing creativity, which is the foundation for the proper use of knowledge.

  33. Teachers must follow the curriculum that is, in an opinion of majority, useless. We cannot change the whole education system with one person. But one teacher can with his own system of teaching change the mind of whole classroom. And those individuals can pass on their knowledge to the others and so on. Because of technology that is progressing more and more, whole world is changing, but education system is almost the same like it was ten years ago. The curriculum must be connected with the vision where in a future we want our world to be. And, as it was said in a video of Ted speeches, we need to support and develop creativity, because nowadays we need science and science cannot survive without creative people.

Otherwise it is not this simple unfortunately, because despite of we find a good solution for our problems, new ones will show up, like in the article, the problem of originality, or the consideration of the ultimate paradigm. I’m not expert enought to understand all, but i don’t think we already did with this our last jump. There are a lot of things in front of us, and soon we will see it!

This article touches interesting topic of renewing or better to say changing the educational system, with which I hundred per cent agree, as I feel that it is needed. Finding the balance between theory and practice, whose are or at least should be inseparable, is one of the greatest task of educational institutions. As the most difficult or tricky part I consider how you put all the new ideas, all the creativity into such a small amount of hours, which teachers usually get for each topic. Of course as everything this is also very individual and it highly depends on the teacher itself. In any way changing educational system can not be done within a week, but as a good sign I am taking that at least people have started to talk about it, with that the journey has begun.

The relationship between theory and practice is an often debated topic. I am of the opinion that the one without the other can not exist. Some need a theoretical basis better to deal with problems of the world, other students, in turn, are better in exploratory learning. In my case, it is so that I have something sustainable notice me when I come to the solution of the problem itself. As a teacher it is important to pick up many different approaches to teaching, so that the teacher can reach as all students on at least one level.

I read in one article, that knowledge is a summation of interrelated knowledge and experience in certain areas. We can gain knowledge in practice and study. I think, pracitce is very important for getting knowledge – verification of theoretical studies in practical work.
A large number of educational curriculum doesn´t provide opportunity and space to pupils and for their practice.
I have met teachers who wanted to first discuss theoretical instruction and only after – at the end of the school year (if they have time), they wanted to do practice classes. I want to say from my own experience that these moments when we had practice classes and we found out something ourself, I remember much more than in theory , which I perfectly knew at the time. I think that what is learned by heart can be quickly forgotten, but what you try out in practice, you don´t forget this.

What I particularly want to go on is learning through a creative process. On the one hand they want to apply it in this way, like teaching, but on the other hand, there are too many things that a child should be learning.
There is too much curriculum what the child at the end of his school should know. This is taught by the pounding of a string or the constant reading of texts.
Why do not we deal with the bigger, take the kids to the woods and tell about the nature. Shows how trees grow or how a leaf falls from the tree.
But there is no time for it, or they make nog free time.
Take for example the transition from group 2 to group 3. The toddlers learns playfully. One higher group and they has only/lots of classroom learning. For a child, this is such a change, because getting to the brain with a whole different way of learning.

Arts and science need to be included in our curriculum and not treated as abstract disciplines. One of the biggest problems I see in education and the transfer of knowledge is the strict separation of different subjects and disciplines which already starts at a very early stage in the school system. The categorization of creativity and logic into two absolutely different disciplines teaches us to separate and think in boxes, rather than in whole pictures and designs. The problem we are facing in our daily student lives is that we are constantly learning old theories which have certainly a right and a need to be understood; it however might prevent from inventing and creating new and original ideas and concepts that are probably more relevant and needed in these days. How must a curriculum therefore look like to allow and encourage human creativity and inspiration? In how far can a school system and its curriculum contribute to innovations and creative inventions? I am absolutely convinced that ideas a prosperous environment where they can grow and develop. This environment needs to be created at universities and even schools in order to keep moving forwards and create future ideas instead of studying the ones from the past decades and centuries.

  41. Knowledge and education suppose to be a one inseparable factor, but they are not.
We go to the school and 50% of that time, is lost, because of the wrong programm of education.
The teachers cannot change the program by themselves unfortunatly, but they could do the classes more interesting So we – students- could mix those two factors into one.
The new demands are probably hard to realize, but possible. Changes in the structure of learning. I know many teachers who are changing the structure and it makes sense.
Changes in the traditional ways of organising, dividing and specialising knowledge is the key. If the organization will be thought, the whole situation can change with it.

Personally I think that problem might be in curriculum, as teachers have to follow it strictly.
Generally speaking in my opinion the problem is also that we (pupils/students) are given too much theoretical knowledge instead of practice which is necessary in order to know how to use theory in different situations in our everyday life. What is the point of learning definitions and mathematical formulas if we are not able to use it when it is needed? It is too much about theory, too less about how to put it in real life. In order to get combination of this too ways of learning it is necessary to link art and science. And art is creativity that can’t be measured only by school grades. That is another problem – children and their parents and teachers (who both motivate them to learn) are to focused on their child to get good mark and pass exams with the best grades than to get useful knowledge or develop their skills. But on the other hand, for school system, there is no other way to check students knowledge than doing test, exam and then give them mark.

I think both knowledge and education are problematic due to the fact that they are still cahnging avaluating .Because the knowledge is expanding the education and it’s methods should be changing as well. Education is the constructive, consistent and compelling system of values around which personal as well as social life should be built, a “compelling system of values” –that is to say, it is a “categorical imperative for us to be virtuous and noble. The future-oriented education is about advancement and escalation even when we are studying the precedent. Thus the side of thinking we should lean to focus upon is learning and investigation of what has been learnt.
As a conclusion we can say that Education is not the mere possession of book knowledge, or a literalism that one can show off to impress one’s fellow men. Real education is a process one’s embryonic qualities (physical, mental, moral, and spiritual) are called to mind, fostered and refined, so as to fashion out an ideal human individual, capable and willing to play his part for the betterment of human race.In my country ( TURKEY) situation of enviromental education in turkish education system can be explained in two steps 1.Primary level enviromental education issues are presented in lesson of science and nature knowledge in nature conservation chapter. 2. Secondary level,Enviromental education lesson is called .Enviroment and Human at secondary level in Turkey and it is optional.

Education , art , creativity are fully connected with each other and complement each other . To be creative , we need more flexibility in thinking , greater openness to the extra-logical thinking , ability to find sometimes distant words , greater involvement of sensory perceptual processes , effective work of creative imagination and better memory .

It’s hard to find new solutions and create interesting , original ideas , if you continually repeat our behavior and replicate the same strategies for action . As Abraham Maslow said : „If the only tool which we use is a hammer, everything around will be treated as nails” .

Therefore, I believe that the curriculum should include more practical activities that will help develop our creativity. Teaching should focus more on how we can get use from our knowledge , not just how to process information . Profesors should not only give information but also that students should unlock and enhance the use of creativity and self thinking , because it allows them to develop interesting ideas and concepts important to the modern world.

I believe that teaching is more crucial than knowing. Confucius says «no matter how much you know, all you say is as much as the person you speak to can understand». So These three dimensions: Teacher’s logic, student’s logic and subject’s logic are crucial. I think all new methods which will be applied in the future, will be based on these logics. But some methods will be very creative. Art and Science, together, will find these creative methods. We need to imagine to find ways of education. To imagine logically, we need science. When we prove our imagination with science, it will not just an imagination anymore. I am impressed by the speaker. Because throughout her life, she always found something to do and to love doing something. Now she has experience and knowledge which lead logic of human. The question in the video «hat is our mission?» impressed me very much. Really we need to ask this question ourselves. Art and Science as said in video can be said that separated aspects in 2002. But now we can say that they are gathering together. by this way new era will be started. When she went to space she carried a poster by Alvin Ailey, a Bundu statue etc. And folks asked her «why did you take up what you took up?» And the answer, which summarize the video, human life, past, present and future, is coming by her » because it represents human creativity, the creativity that would allowed us, that we were required to have concieve and build and launch the space shuttle springs from the same source as the imagination and analysis it took to carve a Bundu statue or the ingenuity it took the design choreograph, and the stage «Cry». Each one of them are different manifestations, incarnations, of creatvity, avatars of human creativity and that’s what we had to reconcile in our minds how these things fit together». ı need to underline this answer. This is the milestone of the video. I think these sentences will lead our future life to be a part of solution for professional world.

I believe the three logics highlighted by Joshua and Dupin are extremely important for education systems as it gives them structure. However I feel many education systems restrict the educator and the students. As the world around us changes frequently education should also be able to adapt to these changes. Education systems need to be able to meet new demands. In schools today students retrieve a lot of knowledge but are unsure what to do with it. It is important to learn about philosophers, practitioners and be aware of the world’s history but we as a generation need to make our own history, therefore schools need to focus more on linking art and science. This will encourage new ideas by discovering the importance of analytical and creative thinking along with how they are connected. I feel this is the way to build a bright future for the world we live in.

Creating good content and full education can be seen as an impossible task in my eyes. Education is always changing and you can not run fast enough to keep. At the What has always been very important to me, is what children need to learn is actually relevant to them. what I see as a problem in the Netherlands are many frameworks that teachers are assigned. You should be free, creative and meaningful, but at the same time, there is no room to breath
What is often forgotten is the curiosity of children. Kids have questions. Children want to know things. Children are curious. Why we do not listen to? if we can connect with what is important to keep yourself standing in society these factors you’re doing well. Education does not stand still, and is not to frame. If it’s a good, solid and substantiated.

  48. Knowledge, education nowadays is very important. It is normal, than children go to primary school when they are six or seven years old, then secondary school, high school and at the last university. Almost everyone has at least one degree nowadays.
But I see problem in too much theory (knowledge) in schools and insufficient part of practical working, training, internships. I think it is more important that pupils, students see and prove as soon as possible how real work looks. The problem is in curriculum, because it is obligatory part in schools and teachers have to consider it, because if they teach in their own way (with more creativity, for example in learning Maths not in just normal way, but in different way, with more practical lessons) they can have problems with their superiors. So pupils usually learn a lot of theory, but they do not know, how real life looks. For example is the same on some faculties. In Slovenia I study social pedagogy and fortunately I have practical training every year. During this I learn more than on theory lectures.

  50. The article touches an important problem of creativity, and the need for a new teaching paradigm. For me it still semms very difficult. How does one teaches creativity in a school environment, where teachers are limited to the syllabus, have a specified number of lessons, usually nnot enough to cover the material well enough. However, a small but significant changes would be possible for creative and motivated teachers. For example, giving a creative homework, asking students to find information not via the Internet but e.g. by asking strangers on the street, giving them task-oriented activities where they work as a group and have the feeling of doing something important.

  51. Our way of evaluating students should be more balanced, not only evaluating on ‘knowledge’ but also on ‘skills’. All exams are based on ‘knowledge’ , students that are good at studying get there diploma easily, students that are great practitioners but have difficulties with the materials will be penalized. I would rather have a very good practitioners as my colleague than a expert colleague in theory but not able to set the theory in practice and not able to handle the problems. That’s why I think there should be 50/50% internship and theory in higher studies. Like that you would stimulate original students to set their ideas in practice instead of following the given way of education. And less creative students will be encouraged because they will learn it doing internship/learning it from the colleagues.

  52. I totally agree that art and science are connected. To be a great scientist you need to be creative, this is the first time I read this quotation of Einstein that every art and science comes from a mystery. To develop something and to make something we need not only knowledge but also an idea. I think that teaching should focus more on how we can get use from our knowledge. Nowadays we need to learn so much information from very different part of live while we still do not know what to do with them. What is more, it is hard to find what is important and what is irrelevant. Putting a pressure on creativity and self thinking (instead of googling everything) should be key matters during changing the way of teaching.

  53. The benefits of art-science collaboration also come from the product itself, which holds potential to inspire nonscientists. Reports on science education emphasize the importance of providing a solid foundation in science for all students, but considering many college students never complete more than a single science course, providing a lasting foundation through traditional classroom instruction is an impossible task. For students who view science as just another checkbox on a long list of graduation requirements, we must find creative ways to cultivate a lasting sense of wonder and curiosity for scientific discovery. There are, after all, many online resources dedicated to providing world-class science education free of charge. By inspiring curiosity, a specialty of art-science collaborations, we provide motivation to learn.

  54. There are many diversities in the teaching-learning area and these diversities eventually lead to problems. The three logics that Joshua and Dupin mention i also believe are very important in helping to solve these problems. The teacher’s, student’s and subjects’s interests need to be taken into consideration for the teaching-learning bond to work proficiently. If one factor in this bond’s interests is not taken into consideration it will fail. Many changes need to be made to the current sytem of teaching. The old method and beliefs have worked but they have not worked for every student so we should not cling to old teaditions. New methods of teaching should be developed so that all students will be able to learn. We can eeps some of our old traditions but we should not be afraid new ideas in the classroom as they are made for learning.

As Joshua and Dupin mentioned, teaching-learning process is a part of a complex structure. It has always been a major issue from the beginning for human as we have knowledge. We have many theories, articles, studies and etc to find the best ways of teaching and learning. Day by day we add new ways, we recover the inaccurate aspects of past. Today we all know how important the integration in education is. Education is purpose and integration of most of the subjects is one of the most important tools. It is not only for the science and art, integration is very important in all of the steps of education. In this way, learners are able to see as much as possible aspects of a subject and they can comprehend easily. If a subject is presented in only one way, without integration, this subject will be clear for learners who have an intelligence of this presented way. I think it was our biggest problem in our educational system in the past. Classical, teacher-centered, traditional, direct, one-way education.. Today somethings are changing. Also this method in education can increase and stimulate creativity and critical thinking directly.

  56. I support the idea of renewing and expanding the learning processes such as the structure or curriculum or the traditional ways of education. But these should always be based on being innovative and the goal should be to make one reach his ultimate. If this idea is assimilated, not only arts and science but all fields of knowledge will be open to innovations and creative minds.
I’d also like to add that there would never be such a thing as ultimate paradigm in any discipline. This is contrary to human and nature. As long as time goes by change is inevitable and there will always be ways to improve..

  57. I totally agree with the speaker in the video that art and science should be a beautifull colaboration between those two. I think that you need creativity for be innovative and developing new ideas. Ofcourse you also need a lot of knowledge and skills but the fondation of a good idea is creativity. The society nowadays is more based on what we do in the present, also knowing that this will influence the next generations. I think that we should think about the future, how to make this place a better world, especially for the next generations. We should stimulate students nowadays to think about the future and be creative. Problems can only be solved when there is creativity.

You can see that Mrs Jemison is very talented and able to do and understand many problematics. And of course science and creativity come up from the same source – the human brain. So I am sure that they are conected and should not be taken appart. But on the other hand there are resources about the human brain – that each of us uses more one of its halfs – Right brained people are creative and left brained people are more logical. And I think that many people just don’t have the capibility to be great actor or artist and understand deeply some technical or mathematical issues. Well you can say that it is better for the personal development to educate in the full range. And I believe it is. But we also need the deep specialists trying to solve very difficult issues in their work. You can get the ideas also from other specialists from other field..

  59. I really like the idea that arts and science are connected. I´ve never heard anything like that before. I was thinking about the education system in Czech Republic and it is a little bit weird that if you decide for secondary school with specialization (business or engineering) – which means that you already know the direction of your future career, overwhelming majority of students from these schools are less prepared for the entrance exams in universities, because these exams are mostly oriented on general knowledges so the studenst from Gymnasiums are preffered. This should be quite the reverse I think.

I found this article and the video very inspiring and mind-opening and also as a good starting point for appreciating and practicing creativity. Creativity in a sense is to refuse seeing or doing something in the same way as we did in the past. When we question any possible knowledge given to us from our teachers, textbooks and other educating material and analyise it function in the real life. Similarly, as says in the video, just as art is a creative thing, science is too, and the two of them are connected. However, before pretending creativity from young students, it is the responsability of the teachers to give them the courage, confidence and tools to experiment. From my personal experience, I came to believe that the perception of pupils of a given subject and their level of motivation in it, depends a lot from the teachers method of transmitting it to them. So if science, in this case, reaches the children in a more creative way, each day they will be more enthusiastic to try new laboratory experiments at school and working on them creatively. I also reflected on the idea that education and curricular activity is the sum of the three logics: the teacher’s logic, the student’s logic and the subject’s logic. So, the possible failures in the learning process do not only depend on teachers or students, but the subject also plays a role in how it is designed and practiced.

I like it very much because this is how everything start. You see a small mysterious, and you want to make it clearly, leter you have the next and the next, and you still want more! I were having this feeling a lot of times! Anyway I want to focus on creativity. It is really bad that in all the shool system it is no place for creativty! Of course that are subjects like music, techniqua or plastica, sure, but I think it is not enough.
Who now`s how many smart thinks has a children, but in the school no one is listen this. We are focus on a general stareotypes. Off course knowledge is the key, but creativity should show us which door we want to open.

I really liked the quotes during the video, one sentence can determine whole education system or the whole system of human thought. We should not separate knowledge and education from other fields of science. For me everything is connected and everything is based on each other. All areas of science can be combined (for most of people it seems impossible, but it just means that they can function in only one area and they are limited intellectually). Not enough said about the cooperation fields of science, usually are combined only for example: humanities and social sciences, etc. Few people think about combining, for example: education with biology, etc. It’s a pity because this combination would give very positive results.

  63. Education, art, creativity are fully connected with each other and complement each other. Thanks to science, we can develop the art and art as only developing our creativity. The problems definitely should be approached from a distance and look at it from a logical point of view, we should not suggest someone’s opinions only create your own. Everybody knows that school grades are not a measure of human intelligence, which is why teachers should look at student each individual. But first you must completely change the educational system, which would very well favored the development and learning of students and facilitate the work of the teacher.

In my opinion the student should be taught not to the sum of knowledge but the ways of thinking (theoretical, dialectical, logical, analysis, synthesis, systematic approach), development of the creative abilities (the ability to apply the received knowledge in all situations, including independent formulation of the problem and the search for new solutions) improvement of professional skills (free implementation of the required standard and non-standard situations). I absolutely agree that science and art are inseparable from each other. And the intuitive and logical methods should always be present in the minds of people. And the task of the new educational paradigm ensure comprehensive development of human in scientific and artictic ways. And do not forget that competition still exists. Eastern countries rapidly race ahead and we need to put all our efforts on creating a personality having a lot of creative ideas and knowing how to implement them.

I think if we are talking about this problem, then we should refer to the thing that we live in the age of information.
The environment is very dynamically changes from year to year, it is necessary to move to adjust the training program. In connection with the fact that this is virtually impossible, we must focus on changing of the fundamental theoretical framework. Thus, we can compensate for the lag outdated training programs.
In fact, it would eliminate the conflict between the old data and new scientific developments.

  66. Every single way of learning is good because every person has different preferences in learning. So be it constructivism or any other way that is only for progress. While there is any idea any new way of doing anything we going ahead we are developing and that is what important. Humanity always must improve, invent something new because that’s the way we should live. Conservatism at school, at university that is one of the problems of our society no one wants to use his a bit more to invent something a new way of learning everyone is afraid to it. That’s why education system is going down and it’s not gonna improve untill we do something, until we start using of heads.

  67. Of course teaching and learning are very divers and there is not the one and only approche to do so. That starts with the fact that totally different people educate or are educated and everybody has his own way that suits him and should be possible to do it his way.
Appart from that there is also a diversity of the topics that are tought. If we see for exaple in school, where children should receive a general education, mostly the focus is on sience like math and biology, languages and subjects like politics or history. I agree that this are important things to learn about but as well are art, sport and music. Those subjects are often regarded as not very important just a little amusement for the children in between. In my opinion this is a completly wrong approach. For me all subjects should have an equal standing, since they are all equally important!

  68. I believe that creativity in combination with cognitive skills is the best formula, but not the only one. There are so many ways of successful education and so many ways of learning and teaching in the best way. So I also don’t think that constructivism is the only way and ultimate theory, There are so many more, but you have to think further than that, you have to explore and experience different methods. You will always learn from the past and you can always make the theory/system/method better than that it was before. But sometimes, the old way was the best way. Such as clothes. The best clothes aren’t made now and days, but were made in the 60ties-80ties. The material is pretty worthless now and it is still the same price or even more expensive than 20 years ago, but certainly not durable.
All I am trying to say is that I think it is important to look back in history, to take a sharp look at the methods/theories that were or are working, to take a step back instead of creating new non-working methods/theories.

  69. Creativity is logica. It is in any form finding the solotion of a problem when thinking out of the box. If you use only your logic brain you will find the answers in old patterns. If you use knowlege to problems you will find the answers in old patterns. When you use creativity to solve problems you will look further then knowlege. You will see possibilities and diffrent routes to rome. Knowlege is the killer of good ideas. Knowbody knew before a way to rome could be an airplain. If everyody handles on logic mind and knowlege we would still think flying is not possible due to 1000 of reasons.

I remember that when i was in primary school, nobody don’t give importante to painting and music lessons. That was «blank lesson-course» for us. In my opinion, it’s a big problem in Turkey. And all of teachers give a high point to everyone for this lessons. Actually i was bad at in painting and i never do that myself. Everytime my sister did it for me. But teacher didn’t care this and always gave highest grade to me. Now I am thinking its completely wrong ! If i was a teacher, i never do that. We shouldn’t think just learning. When children motivated in this wise, learning will be more easily.

What is education? Is it knowledge in basic skills, academics, technical disciplines, citizenship…or is it something else? Our formal education system says only the academic basics are important, emphasizing the collection of knowledge without understanding its value. What about the processing of knowledge—using inspiration, visionary ambitions, creativity, risk, motivation and the ability to bounce back from failure? These skills are associated with understanding the value of knowledge, but many education institutions don’t consider these skills. There is a huge, disconnected gap, which is a problem for high school students in particular.

  75. Those who have had great achievements in the past have been successful due to creativity. By using creativity, the brain can imagine things that could not possibly be achieved. By thinking outside the box and using creativity, perhaps one day these imaginations can come true. Teachers not only give information to students but also unlock and enhance the use of creativity of their students.Nowadays technology is very easy to discover, you can find the information that you need without effort. However, the information is something that is going to be more effective when combined with creativity. If you only have access to information the only option is to learn by rote, to memorise. But if you present the information in a creative way it will be more easily absorbed.

The words which came first into my minds when I have finished watching this video was: everywhere should be in balance. Sciences and creativity is always going together feet by feet. That is why we cannot separate spheres and say that by doing this you have to use your creativity, but by doing another thing you have to use only your logical thoughts. I agree with the opinion that there is no one way, everything is going together. I really like the equation of outcome: understanding + resources + will = outcome. Where understanding is creativity, sciences, knowledge; resources are labour, money and everything we have to work with; will is how we look into everything, it is our fears, dreams, wills; and the will is the most important thing of the outcome. I also agree with this because if person has the knowledge, many resources but he doesn’t have desire to use it or to do something so nothing would be done. If person are willing to create something, dreaming about new better life so he will create it. The most important thing is the motivation and desire to create the bright world where we are living. But you need to have a balance in all the things.

Albert Einstein said: „Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” I definitely agree with this quote, because nothing cames without a drop of imagination. All investigations and technologies came from science and imagination going in step together. We can‘t divide these things in two separate groups, how it‘s now in for example Lithuania‘s schools. There‘s big distance between these study fields, and it‘s not good, because children‘s should choose strictly and they don‘t have other possibilities. If I want to try different things and make a decision what I want to do in my life, first of all I should get experience in both ways and the make a decision.
In conclusion, what I wanted to say is, we can‘t separate imagination and science, teachers should mix these things together in their education process.

  79. Nowadays people get divided into creative people and scientific people or logical people. It is true, that some people are more creative or for some it is easier to make logical assumptions, but this does not mean that one quality excludes the other. Mae Jemison said, “Science provides an understanding of a universal experience and art provides a universal understanding of a personal experience.» Both intuitive and analytical thinking are connected to each other and I personally think that one couldn’t exist without the other, they complete each other.
I think the problem is that for example in school you have to chose between science and art. I feel as art is more used as a hobby and science is considered to be more «important» than dancing or drawing for example. Art is really important as well, it gives you joy and love and people you work hard to become an artist do it out of love, while people working for example as a financial analyst rather do it for the money than the fun of numbers (obviously this isn’t true for everybody, you cannot generalize people). It is important to start connecting those two more and especially for little kids, to awaken their curiosity about what is going on in the world and to help them understanding in a fun and easy way. A really easy example, every kid hates to clean up, although it is necessary, but if you make a game out of it, like for example a race between two sibblings with a price, they do it with more joy and less complaining. It should be the same with school, because things you actually enjoy doing will stick with you, not like things you hate.
We should try to achieve having kids say «I love school» and not «I love/hate art/science». We need to realize that everything is connected to each other.

  80. When I watch this video, it becomes clear to me how important it is to use both creativity and science together no matter what you are going to work with in the future. Because both are depended on each other. I think that is is very important that everyone can be able to understand that to succeed with a business of any kind, you can not just use just science/knowledge without creativity, because you will not be able to show or create your product without the creativity. That is what the big companies have realized, and that is why they have succeeded. In a working place, for example, it can be a great advantage to not do as «it always has been done» and instead NOT divide employees by occupational categories, but instead let the scientists sit close to, or together with the creative work group. Because, if the people who think that they are the more logical thinking will spend time and work with the creative people, they will be able to exchange knowledge between each other. This will be a great advantage for the company, and I think that the people themselves will evolve as individuals of this way of working. Each individual has to be open to both being creative as being logical thinking. If everyone think this way in stead of having prejudices of each other, we can be able to create so much more in the future, and everyone will be able to develop in both ways.

  81. As a graphic designer, you have to know how to communicate in the most favorable way to make, for example, a product stand out. But it is actually more science to it than I thought, because the next stage of the process is to know how i.e. different designs, colors or quotes comes across when analyzed by the customer. One could say you have to know your facts when it comes to the behavior of the human brain, body and mind. I came to think about this especially, because I have been working several years with graphic design and I always thought of it as more creative than theoretical, but after listening to Mae Jamison’s speech concerning arts vs. science I realized that everything we do can be connected to both these fields. The mistake we instead tend to do is that we see them as separate parts, and yes, I have to say that I like to think at my job as more creative and artistic, but who really said that science can’t be these two things? It is just a statement that we came to accept, without even questioning why. I think Mae is right when saying that we have to combine these two fields and stop having prejudices of one another. As humans, we have to be more aware of ourselves and our senses. Because, in fact, it is only when you combine art and science, that you may be able to achieve your goals.

  82. When watching the video I agreed with some of the points in which Mae Jemison suggested. I believe now there is great emphasis put on finding out each child’s learning style and finding out which individual subject each child excels in whether that be Mathematics, Science or Art and Drama. However I feel that every child should not be restricted by their teacher by suggesting they can only excel in either an ‘analytic’ subject or a ‘creative’ subject. When looking at the different characteristics of a left-brained person and a right-brained person I found that I was in fact a variety of both. This proved to me that this theory is not always correct and so as a teacher we shouldn’t assume that a child is either one or the other and look at each child as an individual unique learner not just either a left or right brained learner.

  83. Technology is progressing day by day. And nothing can not keep speed of this development. the impact on the curriculum, such as technology affects everything. Education curriculum is increasing information day by day. We are trying to teach the children all information . Teachers are using the time to provide information and teacher general cannot ask to students » what do you think»? While the children are drowning in information,we expect develop their creativity. Yes, the art and science intertwined. There is a prerequisite for the development of art in the development of creativity. Educational curricula should be reviewed and innovations should be made by educators to support children’s creativity. However, in this way we raise children who succeed.

It is interesting that Jemison was talking about our influence to other generations. It is sad that in these days most of the people think only about themselfs, in this moment and not think about how all the thing now can develop and how they can influence in the future generations.
In Poland we have to choose our path of education very early, to be exact when we are 12 years old. After this choice automatically we are focusing only on humanistic subjects or mathematic. So you are young and in most cases will change your mind few times, but it will be too late because you will not have the knowledge which is essential to follow the other pattern…
On the other hand, very often teachers don’t care about children feeling. They don’t looking at them like a individual persons only as a mass of disorganized gamblers. Moreover teachers are creating they opinion about children mostly by their appearance and by it they often giving grade and possibilities.

First of all, we have some differences such as etnicity, history, knowledge, thought. In traditional learning system has three main objects ; teacher, learning and student. This approch is positivism. It means there is a knowledge and is not changeable. Teacher teach and student learn. I think it is passive approach. On the other hand is that new approach is constructivism. Knowledge is value that changle and also you can add over that. For some expert think that traditional type is good, for some people not and someone thinks that constructivism is best and ultimate one. There won’t be another type. In my oppinion, new one include more effective learning. Knowledge is not hard rule that unchangle. Also it allow to interpret to knowledge. It include observation and logical thinking. It has comprehensive and effective features.

  86. I totally agree with the telling opinion in the video.I beleive that the science and the art are connected to each other tightly, as Mae Jemison says its very irrational to make a choice between the science and the art.She put his thought into practice by being interested in both the science and the art.The education system is applying the inverse of it.The individuals who grow up in this system cannot produce creative idea.Maybe thats why Mae Jemison says that we cannot create enough ovelty although we have a big technology and possibilities according to past, because we are losing our creativity. The art is the most important factor which revealst that creativty. If a scientist is interested in the art, She can uncover creative and progressive ideas.Nowadays every person wants to improve in one field and works on it, but there are people who are doctors and at the same time interested in music.Human nature is suitable for both artistic and analytical thinking, but after the human was born one of those thinkings dies because of the family, society or the environment, and then he/she has to advance in one of those directions.

  87. Creativity is a part of everyday life weather we know it or not. It may be creativity ideas of others or our own. In schools students need guidance to enhance their creativity skills. At the moment I don’t think schools do a good job of helping students maximise their creativity skills. Creativity can be a fun way of learning which students will enjoy and it should not be exploited. It is so important for students to use their own ideas instead of constantly being told what way to do things. Everybody is different and will have their own individual way of doing things. Without creativity and imagination we would never have any of the amazing technology that we have present today in this modern world. We need creativity in everyday life to help make new discoveries so we can advance the world during our generation.

  88. I found the video of this article extremely interesting an very informative. Before hearing what she had to say I had never really thought about the correlation between analysis and creativity. By highlighting the differences between previous generations and our generation it’s easy to see that the link between analytical and creative thinking has been severed. In the past these two ways of thinking were brought together and used to help people’s understanding of things, leading to new inventions and new discoveries. Nowadays, the link between creative and analytical thinking has been severed and now they are treated as two separate ways of thinking that are not connected. Because of this people’s understanding of things is affected and the sciences and the arts are suffering from neglect because today’s generation don’t fully understand the connection between the two which has caused the nourishment and the development of the arts and sciences to come to a near stop. In order to move past this, we need to rediscover the importance of both analytical and creative ways of thinking as well as their connection

  89. Creativity is a phenomenon born with of people.Everyone uses the ideas of others but it is important to use our experience, knowledge in their own minds.Creative thinking shows different ways to us and a lot of solves the problem.Logic is the creativity guide.Creative thoughts that makes sense if the results are good but the logic sholdn’t block our creativity.Unfortunatelly, little creativity is blocked by the teachers and families. The families wants to raise their children like «normal»kids but every child is different from each other. They have different abilities. The creativity of individuals were developed, they will be happy and successful.Last of all creative learning is very important for education.I hope the new generation develops freely.

  90. In my opinion, the problem shown in this article is very complex. According to me, creativity is the key to development – both myself and the whole world. Let’s look at the world had not discovered the new laws and customs of nothing moved forward.
We needed both philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato, Socrates and the great explorers like Einstein, Newton, Pasteur, Curie-Sklodowska and Copernicus.
Without their modern ideas and discoveries on today we do not understand the world in such a way as it is possible to present times.

  91. I found this article to be an interesting one. Her speech was the highlight of it and put it into perspective for me. I feel schools nowadays need to focus less on exams and focus more on creativity. Encourage students to ask questions that we may not know the answer too. I agree that the arts and science are similar as she states: “Science provides an understanding of a universal experience and art provides a universal understanding of a personal experience”. It is about understanding that the way scientists and artists think are not so different. If both of these were given more attention in education we would have a more successful generation. Artists and scientists should be inspired and bring the different ways of approaching things together to create new ideas and discoveries. Education needs to show children how to be creative and analytical. They need to combine both of these skills so that we have the opportunity to leave behind a legacy that future generations will be grateful for.

  92. I think this movie is really interesting and motivating. Mae Jemison during her speech touched very important topic. I agree with her opinion that we cannot separate art and science. Art is the result of human creativity and science really needs this capacity… With creativity, you can discover a lot of things again and see something in diffrent way. It is thinking that often leads to an alternative solutions.
I know …is easy to say, but we have to start to think that our future depends also from us. Problem is because we often think that we’re not good enough, we cannot change anything.
It’s not true!!! we have the potential, we have ideas. We just cannot be afraid to show it. We can make our life and future better, but first we have to start really care about this.

  93. I am African and Senegalese more exactly and I begin with a phenomenon which always stood out to me: the influence very negative (sometimes ) of the education in the daily life. It’s because of it that pupil / student will not express his opinion in class. It’s because of it that the point of view of student / pupil will not be taken into account. It’s because of it that….. Where from an absence of improvement of conditions in which we study and the future generation will also study in the same conditions. However, I think that school system also must be questioned. In my opinion, the only thing which we should change at people it is their mentality. It’s the only thing which makes that people think only for themselves (selfish), that they react in a unacceptable way in certain situations, and especially as we do not think all in the same way….
For my part, I think that science and art are totally connected or equals and in the end make only one. But, unfortunately, it is not what we teach us to the school, as a result, necessarily, some will put aside the science (difficult, complicated); what will have for consequence: the disappearance of the creativity which, becomes more and more important and essential…

  94. Ofcourse we are living first for present, but what we make in this time, wright now, we with that affecting future, so we are living for future too. In my opinion always in schools, in eduaction, thinking about knowledges we have to think not only for present and future, but we have to think how things was in the past ( do not allow made the same mistakes). With that we can do better for future, for present. We have to analyze things, and be creative how to be better for this time and have to create better future. We have to think how to put more good knowledges in education, how to make students to want do things that they like. We have to create present and future in the same time, our goul is to make things better, make our society better. With better eduaction we can, but we have to make students think more diffrent, more creative and with more will power.
And talking about the video about art and science, it`s so true, i really listen to that. And i think that we have to learn use both, try to connect art and science in our thinking. And i realy liked this sentence what i heard from this video and i agree with that :’’ Science provides an understanding of a universal expierence and arts provides a universal understanding of a personal expierence , thats we have to think about, that they all part of us.’’

  95. I think both knowledge and educatioan are problematic due to the fact that they are still changing and evaluating. Or rather, because the knowledge is expanding, the education and it’s methods should be changing as well. I found really interesting the issue presented in the movie. The issue that we cannot separate analysis from intuiton. They go together and that’s what students should be taught. The system of education should be planned the way which help young people develop both of this capacities. One helps to understand the outside world and another one the inside world. And only this both worlds together can be understand as knowledge. Only knowing both this worlds we can start being creative.

  96. What we do today is important for the future. Things in past affect people’s way of thinking and often shapes their way of thinking on how to handle with different issues. We can change our way to see things… We should be creative, analyze critically, shouldn’t be afraid of originality, of new ideas, new ways of thinking, have courage to follow our thoughts, look for creative solutions for current problems. Also the school system should be more oriented to that ideas and should be more learner centered. Students should be more actively involved in their learning. Teachers in learning process should pay attention to students diversity, give them freedom to express themselves, encourage them in creativity and teachers should develop themselves by learning new techniques, using new technologies of information and communication in their lessons, focusing in new methodologies,… Science and art combine knowledge and creativity. Both involve ideas, theories and there is connection between this two fields (example from history: Egyptian pyramids). This two disciplines cannot exist without each other and I agree that we need to work on connecting them more.

  97. In schools today I think that creativity should be heavily emphasised by the teacher. Not only does it help students become independent thinkers, it should open them up to a whole new world of concepts and ideas. Mae Jeminson said she thought of ideas as ‘potential energy’- ones which can be developed and put into action. In the majority of schools today there is more focus on getting the right answers in exams so you pass them, making the school look better on the league tables- which leaves little room for creativity. When Mae Jenison is explaining the three items (a poster from a dance company, a Bundu statue and a certificate for the Chicago Public school to improve maths and science) that she took into space with her, she connects the ideas of creativity (the idea to build and launch the space shuttle), imagination and analysis (to build the statue and the concept behind it) and ingenuity (to design and choreograph dances), all ideas which promote that creativity should be encouraged. It links the logistics with creativity.

  98. In my opinion is very important to have an open mind and take some experiences from both theories, as well as T. Kuhn´s theory of historicity so L. Laudan theory of creativity and learning and others. I think that this new modern epoche could give the teacher new view on creativity in teaching. These new methods are great step foreward into the future, but i think that is important to keep some older techniques or rules which are already tested with positive results. According to me new methods gives to much discretion to the pupils which may prove to be useless in the classroom and for teachers themselfs. I think that just to combine old and new methods could bring success.

  99. I believe that creativity and logic are connected and at the same time complete each other. It was argued/ proved in most practical cases which we had on my university of social work in Slovenia.
In my opinion, teachers should teach children/ students to use more creativity and to think outside the box. But on the other hand, I realize that teachers are limited by law and the curriculum, which is controlled by law. A possible option would be that the teachers will try additional to be very creative and this would be imitated by children. But now days is so much pressure that most of teachers will not sustain this. So, they prefer to carry out his job and don’t endeavor it and give more to children if it’s not required of him.
In general I think that creativity gives us more options for self development in all areas in life, also in science of teaching.

  100. It seems to me that creativity and logic influence each other. During the studyi logic helps us to understand the knowledge we want to acquire (the easiest way for us) and creativity helps us to look at the problem from different perspectives. It’s the same with teachers. We shouldnt put all students to the same rame of thinking. Each student should be treated individually, as it can be right. Creativity gives us the different paths of thinking. Therefore, we can never be confined to already established patterns. We can always make a difference. It is only a matter of time, desire, and a different perspective on the topic. Therefore any opinion (whether it is an essay, or note, or idea) need to consider individual

  101. There should be a tolerance to different ways of teaching but it is a necessary to have a base of knowledge which everybody should acquire at school. Teachers should come with ideas how to pass the knowledge in a proper way to boost creativity in pupils. In Poland, one part of the final exam after high school is to writte an essay on a topic given and later teachers check it with an answer key what in my opinion is a complete failure which destroy creativity because students must stick to the key to pass. If they have other point of view, other reflections than «it should be» the points will not be awarded, even though it would be the ingenious essay. Educational system is constantly being improved and changed. I feel that we, today’s pupils and students, are just an experiment on the way to find the most appropriate scheme. That, what we do today has a matter for future generations. We build the bases, same as we used previously built foundations. Thanks to the creativity we are where we are, we come to something. Human possibilities are countless because we have the biggest power which is our imagination. We need both science and arts for our overall development, the point is to integrate these both things and keep an open mind. It is true that idea is a potential energy supposed to be put into action together with taking responsibility for the future.

  102. I think the «evidence of the differneces» is a huge problem for science and esoecially for educational science. The aim of a thoery is, in a very shortened way, to be as general as possible, to describe many things. But the manifoldness of reality disproves almost every theory easily.
So if we follow a common rule in pedagogy, the thoery has to give instructions and methods for the practice, but if theorys are immediately disproved if used in pracitce, teaching and education is in a massive crisis. Maybe tzhis is way construcivism is that succesful in educational science.
And this is the point were Mae Jemison´s ideas come at proper time, she opens new view on science and maybe enables new ideas and her views are absolutly amazing and easily understandable at the same time.

Another great ducumentary about the link between science and art is perhaps this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s65DSz78jW4

  103. First I want to say that this video was so refreshing from everything else that I have heard or read about problems in our world nowadays. I was surprised that this video was taken in 2002, Mae Jemison has such an amazing point of view, such great ideas and I totally agree with what she said at the end that there are a lot of people with great ideas which this world could really use right now, but they won’t become true if we don’t put our energy and time it them.
Nowadays our scientific discoveries are mostly based on developing, making better old technology and it has become so hard to make whole new scientific discoveries. That is why we need to concentrate our thoughts to science.
In Latvia and Lithuania in high school we can choose several deviations such as science and technology, humanitarian, all- in and others. The difference between them is that in the sciences you study biology, chemistry, physics separately, but in humanity you have only one class in which are all of these subjects, but they learn only the most simple basics of these sciences. And humanitarian deviation has subjects such as music, one more foreign language which you can choose and they have more language lessons in one week than science deviation pupils. So does this mean that scientists don’t need or like music or foreign languages? And does this mean that humanitarian pupils don’t have to know more than just the basics in biology, chemistry and physics? When did the bulling smart kids in school become popular and when will it end? What changed our beliefs in what we should or shouldn’t know… Often people complain of being fooled or tricked into something. When we remove our morals and just look at the situation it just means that someone was way smarter than you…
Of course this idea which I am proposing that everyone should study more sciences may seem a little unrealistic, and there would be a lot of people who would say – „I don’t need to know all of this, because I am not gong to be a scientist, a doctor etc.”, and it’s a shame that so many young people refuse to learn something more in the science field, just because of that…
Constantly thinking about the „lack of creativity and good ideas” issue it came to my mind that there is too much of putting people in different categories. Even the teachers… Mostly when they teach a class they forget that each person is an individual and different, and they teach everyone the same way, assess everyone the same way… (of course it is governments fault too, that it is this way). Teachers (in pre/primary/high school) should make every pupil feel special, individual, one-of-a-kind.. They should do everything to develop children’s creativity and teach them not to be afraid to express it. Because a lot of people think – „Oh, who am I to make a difference? I am only one small person in this world, I can’t change anything”.. They forgot that everything starts with one man, with one idea and as it develops, grows bigger it involves more and more people and changes more and more… Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton and many others, do you know what they all have in common? Yes, they all are unremarkable, successful, powerful people. But not only that.. They all have suffered of bullying in school, and do you think they give up their ideas when someone said that they are no use?

  104. I don’t think the two things can be separated – creativity manifests itself in the least likely of places. As Mae-Jeminson says ‘E=MC2 required an intuitive leap and then you had to do the analysis afterwards’. Without creativity this formula is nondescript, if you use only logic you cannot understand the analysis.
In relation to education it is difficult to learn a concept using only a logical or scientific theory. By including the arts into the fundamental principles of learning children are able to apply what they are learning in a creative way which helps to consolidate the theory for them.
I completely agree with what she says about relevant information. Society is not a competition of knowledge and resource as would be useful to our continuing education and instead with are bombarded with information – if it can be called that – about the latest fads of people we don’t know, phenomena that is irrelevant and gossip that bears no relevance. Yet this is what education is outside of formal schooling for most people. What is read in newspapers, magazines and online is taken for absolute truth regardless of scientific value. Naturally censorship is not the answer, we all have the right to freedom of speech however with more scientific knowledge and application through creative theory perhaps education could come more to the forefront.

  105. I think students and pupils should be teached to think more creatively, to think more outside the box and to create more creative solutions to problems. Teachers should encourage them to do so. Creative thinking is important for our generation and has to be encouraged. The problem is, many teachers still hold on to the old methods or have to because of the curriculums of their country. Some school concepts already try to teach children in a different way but they, again, have to deal with the curriculums the state sets. I think, it still needs a lot of time to change the school system to a better, creative and more open on , every child can benefit from.

  106. I think that teachers use all the time their same methods for teaching. I agree that all the time teaching process is going to the circle they give students knowledge and after a few years they will tell the same. They have made their own teaching plans and methods which they can use all the time. Talking about video I agree her opinion, because I think the same that science consists art. All people can use their creativity and ideas to make every day something new. When we think about 40 years ago then people never imagine that things which are right now. And right now we can not imagine those things which will be in the future. These all things are dependent from us and our knowledge and ideas. All the time will be these groups who really want to be creative and make something new unknown and those who don’t want to do anything and work only «black job». I like that in nowadays schools more think about personal creativity, learn people to be individual, make their own ideas.

  107. Everybody has some kind of theory , which is being updated , but in the score no one has come , this means that everyone has the opportunity to add other ideas. Schools are formed by standards , where repeats the same by years . Education should be to ascending . I believe that it is possible to refresh the learning and teaching process. Schools need originality that students would like to go there . The knowledge, which teachers gives to pupils is the same. In my opinion, they should be supplemented with something new or to provide modern examples . The main support can make state. Describing the video , it is understood that each of the areas is of growth potential , but there is not people with the ideas. People need to love the things that they do, then they will be interested to develop and improve, get new opportunities. Also, she talks about creativity , it is important in each of the scopes . The important thing is not aim, but to move ahead , be creative , and without standing on the site because of any action we will get experience and training . An important question to ourselves is : what do we want to achieve ? It should be seen as progress . Science and art combine complete – knowledge plus creativity . Many people think that there is not opportunity to develop more. They compare their past with present, and think that this is all what they can do. So they do not look for new ways how to develop. People need to develop themselves fully in order to be in harmony with themselves.

First I have to say that I was impressed by Mae Jemison’s speech in the video clip. The way she explained her point of view made me think about the connection of science and arts in a way I have not thought of yet. I can agree with her when she said that there is creativity in both of them. Now I can see that it makes sense to integrate science in arts and integrate also arts in science, more than I thought up to the present. We need people like her, who come up with creative ideas about the way of learning and innovate new methods of learning, So we can hear them, think about it and build or reflect our own opinion. This could be the fundament for the school’s development.

We live in an epoch of innovative technologies and definitely this epoch differs from the previous ones. There are lots of changes in every sphere of modern society and they influence education first of all. As we have lots of opportunities to improve the educational system now we are able to correlate and reconile arts and science but in my opinion its hard, because we were born in different epoch where we got used to think in another way than we do it now. But I liked the idea which was proposed in the video and I think if the society manage to combine arts and science, I mean if a person tries to be not only artistic but scientific at the same time he will advance a lot, he’ll start think in different ways.

  110. I have already posted my coment, but I couldn’t watch the viedo clip before, so I want just to leave a short comment about this too.
I like this clip a lot. It has opened a new perspective on science and art for me. Till now I have been one of those people as the woman mentioned) who think that art and science are separated as the left and right brain. Know I see the conection and I it makes sense. I agree we need to work on conecting these two fields together more, so that we can better understand ourselves and universe.

  111. Life is a process that hosts the phenomenon. Determined and studied method can be adapted to our lives in the future even if not coming out that day appear. Human knowledge, experience and ability to think constantly evolving component of a system. I watched the video ladies says things people do, not only that day, sheds light on future generations. This technology, education, social life and affects many things come into contact with. Everything produced in science, technology, effects, etc.. education is even affected. But you should not forget. So it appeals to people beyond the stereotypes forward education system. Because the method involves the application. so everyone should interact.

People from the very beginning, when children are born, give them a «label» – you are a girl-take a doll, you’re a boy-take a car and play by it. Then at the school is class division between mathemathic and humanities. That approach is unfair for young people who don’t know already what they want to do in thairs lifes… But this is our nature-we like divisions and generalizations. It’s important to understand that it’s better for the personal development to educate in the full range than only in one domain.
Secondly, I want to confirm that it’s necessary to change education system. There are still some teachers who have very old knowledge and they pass it on to students. That’s very frustrating. Not to be such a pessimist I have to say that on my university there is old-age teacher, which I really appreciate. He has a wealth of knowledge from years ago but he still gaining new information from his field 🙂

  113. In my opinion we should be more optimistic about the outcome at the end of this new epoch of “episthemological considerations«, which nowadays presents an issue for both – teachers and students. If we want to make the system better we need to be critical, we need to reconsider knowledge, ethics, thinking…I think it is nothing bad in this, but the opposite. I agree with the article that »nothing can be generalized« and at the same time I support the T. Kuhn’s theory, which tells us that we should of course search for historicity (constant things that we can really on), but inside this we also need to leave space for doubt and be open to verisimilitude, reconsideration of old-fashioned believes. Moreover, we need to be prepared for new, fresh and different perspectives (like it’s mentioned in the article), origins from three logics: teacher’s logic, student’s logic, subject’s logic. These logics should be treated as something positive and useful, and finally as something which leads to development of knowledge and system. Therefore we need to support new perspectives and changes which come with new epoch – changes in the structure of learning, in the traditional ways of organizing, dividing and specializing knowledge, in the circulation of knowledge and in the way it is appropriated and changes in the social roles of the professions. I am sure changes are good. We just need to reconsider them critically and find the best things in them, so that they (changes) can serve us as something which can improve us, system and the world in general.

  114. This video was just great! I found it very interesting for me, thanks. And I want to say, that i agree with this woman opinion.
I also think it’s important to look for the future, and to start already thinking about how we can creat a better world for our next generations. Because it’s fact and we can see it, that everything what one generation before us did in the past influence us right now, in the present, so it’s important to think about our next generation and about what will happen in the future.
It’s significant for us to be creative – to create, bring and applied in practice new ideas and new things, so that lead us to fact, that science and art is very considerable part of our education.

    We are literally stuck.
On the one hand, constructivism is bound to struggle. This approach obviously is unlikely to work, especially considering the principle of the «last paradigm»: It means that when contstructivism is exhausted, it will be recycled over and over again.
On the over hand, this current radical pessimism also prevents us from moving on. Frankly, this is really sad. Indeed, this approach bans such things as theories, whereas the latter is the reason why the human race and its knowledge are constantly in progress.
So how can we cope with it ?
We can change our way to see things. Just like Mae Jemison suggested it, we can use all the ingredients we already know and create a new mixture which could be the basis of competitiveness, progress, innovations and discoveries. She tries to prove that we can combine two topics, science and arts, because they are much more linked that we first thought and by doing so, we will be able to push back the our limits and our skilfullness.
I totally agree with her, but how can we implement such tremendous change in nowadays’ education ?

  116. The way that the woman in the video explains how the human creativity is the source of both art and science, is really nice. I didn’t look at it that way before. But it is true what she says. People think that art is for creative people and that science is for more ‘logic’ and ‘serious’ people. But in fact, science is also for creative people because the source of science is the human creativity. You have to be creative about what you want to know or what you want to do and then you can do science. How else did the first man on the moon got on the moon? People had to say ‘I want to step on the moon’ before they would even think about building space shuttles. So I think the way that the woman explains how creativity and art are bound, is really eye-opening. And she is really right when she says that it is very pity that in education the teaching of art is disappearing. I really think that teaching art should be considered as important as teaching science, because some children more interested in science and others are more interested in art.
I also liked the statement that she made in the video: science provides an understanding of a universal experience and art provides a universal understanding of a personal experience. People who see something happening in the world like all other people for example the fact that the sun comes up in the day and goes during the night, will be explored and that is called science. But on the other hand, when a person has had a personal experience, he or she will use this as inspiration to make art. And that art is spread and people recognize themselves in the personal experience of the art. So when the woman says that there should really be done something about the fact that art is disappearing, I totally agree.

  117. Yes, 100% agree with Mae Jemison. Man must evolve in several directions rather than in one particular. This does not allow us to look at the world from different directions, only one still the same. In Poland, the student must decide what specific direction you want to develop as early as age 15. He must choose the profile which wants high school. According to me it is far too early to make that choice. Man should be educated in different directions, so that got along in different life situations. I would like to have a few words to write about «what do we do now will have an influence on future generations «.The problem is that society does not worry about what will be in the future, they are living now and they aren’t interesting in the future, do not fear that it may run out of water, food for future generations!

At first I want to say that Jemison`s speech was very interesting for me!
Mae Jemison in her speech draws attention to the very important issues.
Today education is really important for people in whole world, and that’s the fact. But in a process of education we lost the most important idea of education which is in my opinion open mind, creativity, and analytical thinking. As Mae said in her speech people are thinking that science and the arts are really separate. And people have this idea that scientists and science is not creative. Maybe scientists are ingenious, but they’re not creative. And then they have this tendency, the career counselors and various people say things like, «Artists are not analytical. They’re ingenious, perhaps, but not analytical».
This everything makes that people try to find something that let them to be creative and logical at the same time and they don’t want to choose art and science but something between.
In my opinion science and art should inspire, motivate and arouse curiosity.
And now I think it’s huge problem in our education, because a lot of young people think that science is boring, complicated and art is detached from reality.
We need to change something in our education process and first of all our view that ingenuity and analyticity are not mutually exclusive.
Because if we don’t change our thinking we are lagging behind.

  119. Nowadays, every person strives to deepen their knowledge by. In order to have more and greater education and experience. I agree that we should have chosen goal and strive to realize it. We need to know who we want to be and what we want to achieve.
Very interesting issue discussed the Mae Jemison in her speech. Namely, I agree with her completely that art and science are interconnected. In addition to creativity always there will also logic and analysis. Education system should be reformed in this respect. In schools we are taught increasingly to include only specific exam – so that our creativity is suppressed, because we are already taught a particular course of thinking. I think the suppression of creativity in people is wrong and leads only to passively participate in what is going on around us. We do not create nothing value for future generations, and for sure we must change it.

First of all I both agree the essay and the comments that are written here. Personally I think those 2 concepts can not be sperated in the sense of teaching or learning them (and they shouldn not be). The prevailing vision for undergraduate science education includes increased collaboration among teachers of science, technology, engineering and math and an overhaul of introductory courses. But by staying within the borders of these professions, are we overlooking connections between the arts and innovative science? Likewise, are we missing an important opportunity to inspire and inform nonscientists? We can explore how weaving the visual arts into a science curriculum can both help develop scientific imagination and engage nonscientists. For example, we can describe a recent collaboration between artists and scientists to create a series of science-inspired sculptures. To sum up, we can not seperate those two concepts from eachother, as they benefit one another.

  121. I often disagree with what is passed off as Art/Science. Certainly it will be a combination of art and science with the goal of telling us something about a world beyond our perceptions. As it is clarified by Mae Jemison, the bringing together of art and science will have to be accomplished by artists with more than a passing knowledge of science – and vice versa. In the end, I think it will combine incredible advances in computer technology with science, and artistic concepts such as beauty – so that artists might be able to manipulate visual images as if they were equations! Surely all this touches on fundamental issues in art, science, technology and education in the 21st century. So, educators must be reminded that comprehension and experience in science and art involve similar visual response– as does the very process of creativity in both fields. Although they produce different outcomes, the perception of both art and science of rhythm, pattern, proportion and form rely on the same principles of unity and organization.

if we remember our primary school we can admit that it was a mixture of every kind of subjects. But with the higher education we had to choose. Do I want to study science, chemistry, mathematic? or it would be better with the literature, history, and arts? Do I feel more like an artist or a scientist? This is how we are usually led. But due to this video and Mae Jemison`s speech I can say that the change is possible. Her explanation that science and arts do not have to be understood separately is really impressive. It is like a breaking some kind of stereotype which is quiet common in the education system.

Mae Jemison rightly claims that the Arts and Sciences need to be revitalised, They are often two distinct areas of the curriculum given separate time slots in the school day. The importance of connecting the two is often overlooked. Priority is usually given to the core subjects, maths and science, in the thought that these subjects will be of most benefit for the children. The teachers are not to blame. They are teaching the content needed to pass exams. I believe the blame is on the educational ministers in government. It is those people and their political parties that need to review the educational system. Creativity is inarguably stunted. Children are not encouraged to take their own initiative to problem solve and generate new ideas. Rote learning answers (learning answers by heart) and regurgiataing them for the purpose of an exam is more often than not a pointless exercise. The information is not remembered because it is unconnected to meaningful experience. Whereas, if a child were to be creative and work as a team to create solutions to problems, the information would be retained for a longer period of time. In this way, the child would become more knowledgeable AND educated.

The biggest problem of education is at conventionalism, authority and individuality. Removing old knowledge and adding new knowledge, lessons’ being teacher centered, students’ not being given the freedom of expressing themselves cause education to go back. Teachers’ leading students to search and their being guide to them instead of giving the information directly is the best method. Of course the student has to want that situation. He/she has to be receptive to education, technology and innovation. As in the article the dialectic of the teacher, the student and the subject is very important.

Art and Science are often viewed as being different in so many ways that they appear essentially unrelated. Art is often seen as creative, intuitive, expressive, sensual, experiential, and emotional; Science, as methodical, logical, explicative, intellectual, cognitive, and rational. Nevertheless, appearances can be deceiving. Science is changing our world and our lives at an ever increasing rate. But today artists are bringing science out of the laboratory. These days the term ‘art and science’ is on everyone’s lips – but no one quite knows what it is or where it is going. Does it mark the rise of a new culture in which science and technology will be the driving forces and will even perhaps determine the future of culture? Are there similarities in the creative processes of artists and scientists? Can science benefit from art?..etc.
Yes science make us from art and art make us from science. We can say that these two concepts contributed to each other and future.this contribution be seen in the informative and realization of the activity. Scientific discoveries encourage to literary fantasy. On the other hand this literary fantasy accelerate to scientific activity. for example; Jules Verne wrote ‘Journey to the Moon’ in 1865 ,and after a century it fulfilled, this fulfillment shows the encouraging role of it.

  126. It is beautiful to hear the thought about integrating arts and sciences the same as integrating body and mind. Like human being is a one organism where body and mind are very much connected. The same is with brains where everything is interconnected. From my experience I can say that my parents originally studied physics and mathematics and now very much enjoy being in a choir. I was singing in a choir of students from the faculty of physics and mathematics – the same my parents have graduated in their time. And I saw the passion about science very much connected with the passion for singing, for culture and art. And people who are good at science, who can see the bigger picture there, can understand the way how music is made and see the bigger picture in the music too. And this connection is really amazing, because from school I had the feeling that these spheres are not really connected. If I am good at mathematics then it is logical and understandable that I am bad at literature or drawing. But it is not necessarily so. Everything is connected.

But before the end of school, I decided that I shall stand in Ecology and Environmental studies lead to additional schools have started chemistry, physics, biology, geography, and it was quite a big workload and when I went to university I had to start all schools have started from the beginning because now the university is the most important Environmental sciences not Humanities,

Listening to the speech of Mrs. Jamison made me think about the connection between art and sciences. To be honest I think that a lot of people never thought about this connection because they didn’t learned it at school.
At school you have different classes/subjects and when you get older you have to choose between art and sciences because they see it as very different things. I think that Mrs. Jamison is right and that there is a connection between art and sciences, you don’t have to choose between realistic and idealistic because you need both in life!
We need to build our resources today for the future so education has to keep up with this and shouldn’t separate both subjects. Today it is important for the future: if I look at what we are now I see the link with the past (50’s, 60’s, 70’s). Teachers should be aware of that and they should try to integrate art in science and science in art. The pupils will learn to express themselves better and to be more “open minded”.

  129. Renewed curriculum in the education system, a huge obstacle to progress. This will prevent the students to develop themselves and achieve innovation. The other problem, something imposed on students. As we have seen in the video, individuals must provide information in many areas and a wide. Students were trained in only one area, you can always remain incomplete. Because there are things you need to explore both art and science. I had to take one picture or music lessons at my high school. I could not understand why. Because I had to learn the sciences, such as mathematics. But now I can see the causes. Changing government policies and that teachers should be educated in this regard.

  130. I’m impressed by the speech of Mrs. Jamison because she speaks about a topic lots of people are not even thinking about. It’s an quite interesting idea to put science and arts together and it isn’t unrealistic, in no case! In Austria the pupils always have to decide whether they want to study more nature sciences or languages or arts or music or commercial fields. These subjects are always seperated and they are taught in separation. At the age of 15 I even had to decide whether I would prefer music or arts (that was horrible for me because I liked both subjects so much). It’s the wrong way to separate children in 2 groups – creative sector or logical sector. I’m not that good in maths, physics or chemistry and most of the teachers have tought these subjects in a very confusing and abstract way (without playful and demonstrative methods). So for me it was hard to understand and I couldn’t get an access to these areas. Nowadays I’m sad about it because it would be good to feel more secure in these sectors. Teacher should be more open to mix arts, games and science together but I think that many teachers are afraid of this try because they could fail. But if you never try you’ll never know – so just do it!

  131. This speech of Mrs. Jemison is incredibly inspiring. During watching this video I though: why don’t we tell things like that children in school. In reality there are a lot of people who are connecting creativity with analitics and are very successful and inspiring but why is school so uninspiring? The curriculum nowadays is detached to life and antiquated. The educacional system actually is vivid and should be dynamic. But the process to adapt to the actual changes is too slow.
The big duty of school is to show the children their oppurtunities, their individual opportunity but also oppurtunities in the world. Teachers should encourage their pupil to be creative in their way of life and to change a little bit the world.
Also all the disciplines should be treated iqually and maybe interdisciplinarity is the keyword. Every field is connected to each other and interact with others and if you have this consciessness it opens a lot of different perspectivs and possibilities. This is obligatory to transport in schools.

  132. In my oppinion the problem, what this article is about, is really important, especially nowadays. In Hungary we have huge problem with our educational system. Most of the teachers think about teaching as only work. If they would be more motivated, our lessons would be much more intresting and because of this we, students would also be more motivated to make some reserarches about the topics and our knowledge of the world would increase as well. The quality of the education has big influence of our future.
In Hungary, teachers do not have enough salary and I think it’s a huge problem, because they are absolutely not motivated and they feel that they are not respected. My mother and my sister were both teachers and they always told me that how much they work and the amount of money what they earn are not in balance. In my oppinion the hungarian government should work on this problem first and if they would find a solution for this problem, our whole educational system would improve a lot.

  133. For learning today both teachers and students are KEY! As obvious as this sounds, in todays education envirnoment learning is focused upon learning information, where the teacher revises over past test questions and the students develop the knowledge through repitition. In this sense the teacher is key with their methods in teaching the subject but to really progress, the student also needs to be of focus, for example the student should be supported and prompted to produce their own individual thought and reflection on the subject; This results with both the teacher and student being key focus. It is clear that our teachers have had great teachers but there are only a hand full of people in each decade who are exremely successful for example the people like Richard Branson or Steve Jobbs. I believe these people have been so successful because they produced and followed their own creativity and independant thought. With this statement I believe teachers can and should encourage students to think independantly rather than focusing their teaching upon the known information. I believe teachers should be constantly changing their methods of teaching to drive forward a new platform for devlopment. In conclusion I believe that teaching within the education systems are good but they could be so much better with new introductions of teaching methods, i.e encouraging independant thought or problem based learning; with such examples as these a new generation of thought could be achieved rather than same generation of recurring thoughts and knowledge!

Teachers are the Key! After reading this article I argee with this statement whole heartily, if it were not for the good quality of teachers within the Irish educational system in particular, then local governments, business’ and enterprises would not have been started because the business people and entrepenurs would not have been developed. However these good teachers must of had good teachers also to become were they are today, but instead of just continuing in a constant circle of helping each generation we need to step outside of the box. In my opinion the 21st century has seen alot of individualism and originality, and the bringing of the science and arts together. Take for example Steve Jobs in the invention of apple products, these products were only dreamed of in earlier centuries and even today people wait anxiously for the next apple invention, so as to be amazed. Furthermore people bring science and arts together within there inventions in daily life, this can be seen on the likes of dragons den tv show, when people try to flog there inventions. I believe that we are laying down a very good foundation for the up coming generation to develop and further, however we must not become like sheep and follow the crowd, instead express your individuality.

Education is really important for the mental development of a person. Ms Jemison talks about the interaction between of art and science. Unfortunately, nowadays the students are becoming passive listeners and they don’t create their imagination. They receive information from their society and from their own teachers and they can’t process them as it should be. The education system isn’t cultivate the imagination of young people and is based only in the knowledge that they obtain. Science and art are totally separated and in this way is limited the human creativity. The result of that is that we can’t have people that they will make the correct decisions for the society that they live in. So, in my opinion we should change many things in the educational system if we want to have a progress in our society.

  136. Studies show that there are needed changes in education. The knowledge are improving all the time, that gives much more information to the society. The main problem in changing education, is the right order and accuracy how the educational processes changes by student ability to change alongside. For me it is important to have clear explanations for things in a logical order, so the teachers must be clear how they see the change process and the result that is to be achieved. The educational forms, like constructivism has an impact on education, that is acceptable even today, but to do the things differently there is needed a new way of thinking, «open mind», that can introduce today’s society with more cultures, for example. To take benefits from each culture is now useful and modern. This more free thinking can fight stereotypes and old ways of thinking, that can put a student in depressive moods or let think that he is not able to learn something particular. Or the division between students in grades also asks for more accuracy, because now the standards of what is right or wrong is more felt between young pupils, wheres students thinking is constructed more complex, that could be called a little artistic, alternative and more abstract.

I think that it’s really time to make some changes in the education system. I agree with François Glénat, in France when you are in high-school for example, you have to decide which course you want to follow. And you only have the choice between scientific, arts or economics courses. And during all the years in high-school you are focusing only on mathematics subjects or humanistic subjects. And it’s really a mistake because when you get older, it may happens that you change your mind but it’s too late because you won’t have the knowledge required to follow another course.
So it would be a good idea to create a way which mixes science and literature courses in order to have a knowledge in different subjects.

  138. François Glénat dice: Responder

I totally do agree Mrs Jemison. Nowadays in highschool, Sciences and Arts are completely apart. For example, in France you have to choose between the science way or the Litterature way before getting your diploma. It’s like the system forces you to be qualified in just one thing and not in the other. But it’s completly a mistake. The former clever men as Platon, Pythagor,… and more recently Einstein were both scientists and artists. How do you wanna be a good mathematician without any creativity, without any surprising ideas ? How do you wanna be a Michel Ange without any rigor and method ? Arts and Sciences are complementaries, it completes each other. Actually, we really don’t have to split up these two things.
To me, Mrs Jemison is completely right and I think that in any career we should have some place for the Art or the Science. We have to fight this cliché which says that a scientist is only good in doing mathematics or physics or that the artist is only good in painting or sculpting or thinking.

  139. I can see this video is from 2002, but we’re still facing the same problems today. Arts and science is being too separated. But Mae explains very well the problem and the thing that these two subjects are very close and need to collaborate. I really liked her sentence ,,Science provides an understanding of a universal experience, and arts provides a universal understanding of a personal experience».
In schools we often see that pupils must study a lot from the books, sometimes without understanding anything. Teachers are often too busy to follow the curriculum, so many things might be unexplained. Pupils just study by heart to get a good credit. I agree that we must make some changes in the structure of learning and also in the traditional ways of organising, dividing and specialising knowledge. We are having a new era and the world is changing. For example the climate changes, the crisis of economy etc. Now we need very creative people to deal with these problems, who are also good in sciences. But if we follow the old traditions in schools, we’re not going to have this.

  140. Every day we are bombarded with all kinds of information related to the global financial crisis. Unfortunately the crisis affects not only the financial sector, but also many other areas of human life, including the education system. Education is a very important issue in most people’s lives, because it directs us in later life and in some way deters our future. But the thing is that you never know what the future brings and the current functioning of the education system, which is in my opinion quite outdated, creates persons of narrow horizons who are not ready for an uncertain future.

Mae Jemison is talking about equal importance and interaction of art and science. From my point of view, we are all born artists and human creativity is infinite, and that is an area in which education system has failed completely. Current mode of interaction between teachers and students is definitely not leading to a brighter future. Instead of active participation and reflection, with current learning methods, we have just become passive listeners. This leads to restraint of human creativity, which is absurd, because creativity is in all its range and variety main source of changes and innovations.

Each of us has in their own education by listening to a lesson thought: “When will I need this in my life?”. And the fact is that we are learning too many things which would probably never put in practice. One more problem is that educational system does not take into account diversity of human nature. Every human being has different interests, talents and desires. There are also many students with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to whom traditional education largely harms. From personal family case I could see dullness and lack of recognition of this disorder, is leading to serious problems. Such students are set aside and belittled, but in fact they only needed a different approach, because they have the same abilities as other students, if not more, because they are extremely creative.

Considering all this and thinking about the future of educational system, it is obvious that it is time for significant changes. It is necessary to teach young people how to focus and expand their creativity and free them from the fear of making mistakes. As wise man once said: “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”

I found this article and this topic very interesting because we rarely see a teaching-learning process as a part of a complex structure: the teacher’s logic, the student’s logic and the subject’s logic. We usually see it linear and not logical. When we go to school we are presented with the books that we have to learn from and we learn to deal with them using pattern. We would ask ourself sometimes why do I study this, this is not logical, when will I use this in real life. We only ask ourself but we still continue to learn using pattern. We have to understand that we have to learn, create, have ideas not just for our generation but also for the next one.

That is why I specially like the quote of Franty Fannon ‘Each generation must, out of relative obscurity, discover its missions, fulfill it or betray’. We are born to create ideas which will be useful for everyone. Everything is created and presented to us and we think that it always will be. That we don’t have to do anything and create anything because there will always be someone else that will know what we want. But we should not think like that, we should explore and develop ideas that we think are useful, not wait for someone else because we think that our idea is not good and that someone else will come up with something better. I love how it is stressed how close science and art are. Everything you need is creativity, imagination and will in order to bring some idea to life.

  142. Knowledge is a diffficult area to define. How can we say who is knowledgeable? Creativity and logic are two areas that are at the core of knowledge. As Mae Jemison discusses, trying to separate these concepts develops problems. They should be intwined in order for a better learning experience and thus better knowledge. In many failing education systems, I believe logic can have precedence over creativity. For example it is a well known fact that teachers need to guide their students in order for them to pass exams. Some people look for a shortcut in doing so, therefore cutting out creativty in order to achieve a speedy result. It may seem logical to some people to learn off reems of paper in order to pass the exam, however they aren’t left with much more knowledge than they started off with. I found this a constant reoccurence in my education system. Teachers were looking for the quickest way to get the work done and not taking time to think creatively of innovative and exciting ways to help us to retain the information they were teaching us. I believe this is as a result of failing to realise that creativity and logic are both required in order to develop a concrete knowledge. It is in situations like this where education and knowledge can be viewed as problems.

  143. Knowledge is a word often misunderstood in today’s society in my opinion. Knowledge should not simply mean learning reams of information «Off by Heart» to regurgitate in an exam and simply forget once the exam is completed, as is the case in many countries including my own (Ireland). Instead knowledge should be applied to focus on our opinions, our ideas and our daily lives. While studying a Shakespeare play may benefit an English student or actor, realistically it is not going to help the next great scientist make a discovery or develop great thinkers. Mac Jameson’s speech regarding art and science is very effective and outlines what i have said above. I agree with Mac when she says art is not just about being creative but analyzing and applying ideas. I believe there is a need for a more diverse teaching method to be introduced that excludes learning ‘off by heart’ and includes thinking, demands creativity and activity from students. If this were to happen who knows what type of discoveries, new ideas or inventions we might find.

  144. This is a very interesting article which makes me think about some actually aspects concerning education in my country. I think it’s a real problem in Austria that people often just talk about changing things but in the end they don’t do it. This article and video expresses very clearly to me, that it’s important to act and don’t just to think and discuss certain themes, because with thinking and talking you can’t change anything.
For example: In Austria the education for kindergarten teachers is a big problem which is discussed for years now. The education of the kindergarten teachers in Austria is separated from the education of the other teacher. We are one out of two OECD countries in Europe which don’t offer an university education for kindergarten teachers. International studies, like the OECD study “starting strong” recommends Austria urgently to change this and offer a high quality education for this profession. Furthermore different scientists and educationalists have proved over years with different studies that the education in first years is the most important in live. So everyone knows in Austria that it’s very important to improve the quality of the education for kindergarten teachers, but no one acts…just because of the money. For me this is a big failure of the government because how in the article mentioned, it’s important to keep in mind that everything we do know is present in years. So also our mistakes and failures we don’t change yet will be present in years. When we’re think about the example with the kindergarten teacher this means that the current problems will increase. For example, no valuation of their work, bad payment, no high quality education,… But in contrast to this people make high demands on the profession and want the best education for their children. So this is a big circle of contradictions from which we can only escape by acting and changing how it’s used to be.

  145. I agree with Mea Jemison where she says that there needs to be a closer relationship between the arts and the sciences in order for progression. The fact is that in my country (N.Ireland) the two areas are developed differently and appear to be going in the opposite direction. Schools seam to be more focused on gaining good grades for their pupils and the best way for them to do so is for them get their students to memorize essays and answers and regurgitate class notes. This is not developing the students creativity side but just developing their capacity to memorize material. In my own experiences I can recall having to write an essay on a Shakespeare play. Instead of reading the play from a book the teacher showed us the DVD of the play. I felt this done away with the need for us to imagine characters and to think of scenes creatively in our own minds.
I feel that the best thing for us and future generations is for the education structure to focus more on the development of arts and sciences together. In turn this will develop the next generation of thinkers and developers and will brighten the future for all.

This viedo of Jemison`s speech is very interesting and instructive for me. She’s is trying to explain that science and art are connected and how they can collaborate together. In my opinion is not simply about the possible relationship between art and science but involves more general questions about the significance and meaning of art and science, how it functions in different societies, the way it reflects human consciousness and our perception of the world, its role as an aspect of human creativity, its changing values and deformations in society.
Science and art often seem to develop in separate directions, but many thinkers are inspired by both. I think we should change ways of teaching. because we have every subject so separated from others and so specialized that we end up not knowing anything else. We should open our minds to help generations in the future.

Art and sciences. Our future is based on decisions which are we making today. If we don’t think about oppurtunities, then development will not come to us and we will stay at the same place, where are we now. People can not develop, without intellect, creativity, wish to become more clever. They need to go forward. Nowadays, people are accustomed to get, to receive, to use, but not to give something back. Science is what we discover, but art is what we see in our discovery. How we show it for others. If we use all knowledge, what we have and oppurtunities, what we can get, and add a will to do something, we will have a result. We just need to do. Also doing nothing, have result. It is staying in one place all the time. Also in educational system, we just learn theory, but after the years, when we graduate the university and go to work, in practise we can’t use just theory. We need more then read books, we need to use our mind, our creativity to work. Theory is just like a shell, but art and science are the kernel. We need to learn art and science to be more creative, sensitiveness and punctual.

  148. Mae Jameson’s speech about art and science is very effective when you put it in terms of today’s society and what we as a generation and the educated class are doing for the future. In schools we are taught subjects and learn essays and answers off but how much of the information we obtain is actually going to make a difference to the future generation? Studying a Shakespeare play may be beneficial for one who wants a career in acting but it is not going to help the next great invention or the next great scientist make their discovery. There has to be diverse methods of teaching introduced that encourage students to be the next great inventor, to be special and to make a difference. Science and art are subjects which do in fact work in tandem but they are neglected in education where more focus is put on English and Maths especially in my country of Ireland. By changing the teaching methods and the subject choices we could have the next big invention or the next illusive theory that will affect future generations.

I agree with a speaker, in my opinion science can’t exist without art, as well as art without science. There is no science without imagination and no art without scientific solutions. Author of the speech gave some picturesque examples. Dance is a kind of art and dancers need to think about every move in analytic way. And science is art – creativity of sharing understanding of a universal experience.
I think that it is very important to have a scope of knowledge given us by teachers in our schools, but the most important thing is a way of using this knowledge in our everyday, adult lives. And this is something that lacks in education. There is only theory without practice. And I think it is the major mistake. In schools pupils are given a huge amount of information but it’s useless when they don’t know how and when to use it. The way of teaching should be diversified, demanding creativity and activity from students.

Education is, in retrospect, an acquisition of knowledge. Knowledge which should not serve the purpose to be rhymed off and reguritated, but should be applied to and have an influence on our own ideas, situations, daily lives and personal opinions for what good is knowledge gained when it cannot be used. To be able to make a connection between theory and practice the learner needs to have a creative, innovative and intuitive mind in order to apply their gained knowledge in their own lives- having the intelligence to make connections between different ideas, not purely the quantity of knowledge but in fact the quality. I whole-heartedly agree with Jemison’s speech. Being an art student myself, I understand what she means when is says art is not just about being creative but analysing and applying ideas; being that curious in mind that they seek to explore the new and unknown. I entirely believe that to have a creative and innovative mind is the way for the future for we would not be where we are today without minds such as this in the past. That said, it is true to say that we live in a world that there a rarely completely new ideas, but this does not mean that they are not originial. An original idea can come from making connections that have not been made before between existing ideas and concepts which in my opinion takes true intelligence. Teachers should be facilitators to the learner, to create independent and confident thinkers, being able to imagine, problem-solve, make decisions and connections. In reponse to a previous comment on this article I think that to say that we don’t have any ideas to create a better future is quite a pessimistic outlook. This view would mean that all things stay as they are. There would be no progress and no advances (e.g. in technology). At the moment we can’t even dream about what the future holds for our world, just as people thirty or fourty years ago couldn’t imagine the world that we live in today, especially within the same century. Hope for bigger and better ideas are the driving force for progression in our world, as life is a gradual process. If teachers of our own generation don’t have hope for the future, how can we expect future generations to? We lead by example and inspire future generations for forward thinking and innovative ideas- skills that need to be exercising thoroughly throughout education and art and science are two very closely connected areas of learning that can enhance these skills. Yes, the outcomes of these subjects may be quite different, but that doesn’t mean that the underlying ideas and concepts are not similar.

  151. Education has a special significance in every society. Education on the one hand to look at the past, but hang him, on the other hand looking at the future of human creativity and a pleasant stroll brings quest. In this sense, education,is arebuilding tool for human and community. So education is very important for self-reproduction human beings and society.Humanity walked quickly to walk without falling on slippery surfaces, you should learn in order to achieve the ever-changing road map update. From 20. mid-century, especially in the last quarter of the intense changes in the economic, social, political and cultural areas as well as in the field of education requires a change.

In my opinion education has advantages and disadvantages. Nowadays schools have a lot to offer to students. They have prepared curricula that provides a lot of opportunities. Because of it the subject can be interesting for children. But beside all the modern techniques that are currently available, the most important is the teacher, who should teach in the best way, attract and intrigue of the subject.
Those teachers, for whom this work is more than just a duty, certainly have more successful careers.
In my opinion, the biggest problem is the rigid curriculum, learn by heart and a “rat race”, very common among students.
Very often, these are the reasons, by which students cannot develop, explore their passions and learn what is interesting for them and what they really need in everyday life.
And I hope that this will change soon.

  153. I certainly agree with Mae Jemison’s speech at the TED conference. It can be strongly argued that both art and sciences are currently experiencing major problems and there is a need to revitalize both forms. I believe the United States and Asia are the leading lights in the world today in relation to inventions, technological advancement and forward thinking in a general capacity. In sharp contrast to Asia and America, Europe is lagging behind. In present day, Europe is contributing very little to the legacy of creative thinkers. There is a definite need to reconcile and reintegrate the arts and sciences. Moreover, it can be strongly argued that the core of the problem stems from education. We are now of the view that if we place a computer in a classroom everything is going to be okay. We are relying heavily on computers and machinery alike to tell us what to do. There is no more time or space for creativity and originality. At the end of the day, who wants to be uncreative and illogical? Therefore, society must be encouraged once again to invest in the future and become avatars of human creativity. Ideas must be put into action.

  154. In my opinion nowadays we have many of inventions in the art, science. But I agree Jemison we should think : »What we are adding they?» I think we are just consuming the sources. We don’t produce new opinions. On the other hand some of people have briliant ideas but they don’t make any actions. Also it is so wrong to belittle science or art.Because both of them are incluiding creative, analytical thinking and labor. At this point education system is very important. Because the system can destroy the stereotypes ideas. Generally There are a lot of teoric informations in education system however the system doesn’t show us how can we put into practice what we have learned. I think,In the first place the politicians and company owners who have the power and money, they have to do something to change this situation. To do something for education so for the people is very good than earn more money or power.

  155. I am afraid that we still cant distinguish between science and art or aware that everyone can have some of both. Everybody is here to influence in some way and already as a person you are influencing in someway. I think that every person in inovative but in a different areas, I believe that every single person on this planet is important and have some impact. And if we are trying to make everything so generalized and the school sistem so framed, than we can easily over look the persons speciality. We think that if a person is thinking differently than mayority, that this is because he/she is young or unexperienced. We think that is something wrong with him instead of reward him for not following the established channels or going down the easy steady way.

One key point of Jemison´s speech was for me the sentence that in the 60´s the young generation had dreams and ideas which developed and changed many things for the better.

But today we don´t have any ideas to create a better future. But why? I think that we have reached a level of developing which is very comfortable for us. We don´t want to develop anymore, we only want to save our earnings. We are happy with the “status quo”. But I believe it is never possible to conserve things. When we don´t have any expectations for the future instead of saving our earnings, we are feared and can´t handle new transformations. That is the mean reason for the crisis in Europe and America for me. When I ask my friends what the want to do in the future, the often don´t know. So I think the crisis is not only a risk, it is a chance to shift our system which has lasted to long in the same way, too.

On the other hand parts of the world like Africa or Asia have plans for the future and that´s why they don´t have our big economic and cultural problems.

  157. Nowadays, the philosophy general schools says: «There is a really outstanding seperation of arts and science». When we choose our future specialization in education they always ask us: «Do you feel like to study a technical sphere and science or would you like to be a creative artist or humane-focused to express your ideas and not just to be focused on laws of natures?». Unfortunately teenagers do not have any other option, if they decide for science study, probably won’t have philosophy and arts like a subjects. Speaker’s ideas come out from her own experiences and it’s evident that the barrier between arts and science should be broken, even though it’s necessary to not understand it secularly. Newton’s laws of nature can value without human expressions but we are not able to understand it if we don’t have an imagination, which is actually basic element of arts. Unfortunately at present time it’s getting harder and harder to not separtate it and try to combinate it because of science specialization and supply of new pieces of information.

  158. Mae Jemison’s speech at the TED conference was very forward thinking and also pointed out the practicalities of why our generation needs to keep on learning and developing new ideas, and the ramifications we will face if we don’t. In the clip Jemison quoted Zora Neale Hurston in saying, ‘research is a formalised curiosity’; we are all curious about one thing or another and so we need to chase after that and find the information we want and share it with others to help increase the ideas and thoughts coming from our generation. She also noted that unlike the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, it does matter which road we take and which way we go in life. We need to be ready with our ideas now as they will be built upon and developed in the near future, as we our doing now with ideas from the 60’s and 70’s. But we need to ask ourselves, are we doing enough and playing our part well enough for the generations that will follow us?

I do feel that there is a distinct correaltion between art and science however I do not vehemently agree with the speaker in the video that they are so similiar. Her views on the importance of both science and art was exceptionally thought provoking. her outlook on creativity pervades throughout the video and we are enlightened on the influence that both of these subjects have had on the past as well as today. As deliniated in the above passage, art is regarded with lesser academic importance than science. I feel that this is truly incorrect as art is a pivotal element of the places we live. As a result of art in the past, historians have gathered immense knowledge about the inhabitants of a certain area as well as their views through paintings, sculptures and architecture. Art is ever lasting and needs to be conveyed with greater importance in the educational system. In additon to this science is a fundamental feature of our everyday lives and should be recognised as an integral component in the educational system. In conclusion, it is portrayed in the text that it is through ecucation that society obtains its ethics and opinions and teachers are the ‘the key for the generation and spreading of knowledge’. Therefore the teachers views are manifested through their teaching which in turn influences the students and future members of society.

  160. Jemison`s speech at TED is very interesting and asks many questions. The technology which we use today is a result of previous generations. Therefore, this article asks the question «as a generation what are we doing for future generations?» Therefore, the education system has to add more emphasis on science and arts and not separate them in order to boost creativity and innovation in our generation. Therefore, we as a generation have to be innovative and creative with science and technology in order to make future generations lives better. The world is constantly changing therefore education needs to adapt itself to keep up with this change.

  161. It’s a given that Knowledge and Education work hand in hand since you can’t have one without the other. In the current state of affairs, one will gain, through education, different kinds of knowledge depending on the level, age range, country, personal investment, and so on… It’s evident that we gain something from Education whether it will be valuable or not depends on how one perceives it. From watching the video, I can’t simply say I agree or disagree with the fact we need to rekindle the flame of science and arts, to make the current students and students to come feel the need to focus more on those subjects. To me, one thing is for sure; we do need to foster, in students’ minds, the ability to go forward, to try more things no matter how many fails they may get since you always get to learn from your mistakes (as cliché as it may sound) and that is something invaluably important that we clearly don’t give priority to. As of now, it’s a common fact that Knowledge through Education relies upon grading students and that way of doing things seems quite hazardous, if you ask me. Sure enough, it does get the result of finding out if one has understood a concept or something along those lines but depending on the task requested, you may find students failing even though they’ve got another way of seeing things that may or should, in some cases, require a need to consider seriously. There’s only one way to prove you understood something, if you don’t follow it, you fail, simple as that. Just from that fact, there seems to be an issue that is definitely too deep for me to get into and my opinion can only be biased since I can’t know about things work in different countries or even in mine in all instances of Education. One thing is for sure though, Education is a given, you will learn something from it and for me, we need to add complements that will enable students to thrive for more naturally through the Web (websites like Ted are a good example of what you can gain if you open yourself to more than what you get in class).

In my opinion this article reminds us that we should be active. World has changed during the years and it is changing all the time. We should appreciate the work that our previous generations have done and on the other hand our own generation should continue the work that previous generations have done. I think that we can show our appreciation by being happy about the things that we have got but also by being ready to change the things that need changing. As a becoming teacher I am really interested how I can show my students that it is important to develop and make changes. I think that if school gives students an opportunity to affect some decisions and if the school can give students the feeling that it is matter what they are thinking, maybe they will make decisions and changes later too. So I think that teachers should ask more students opinions, listen students thought seriously and give them an opportunity affect decisions.

Theory and practice are two inseparable aspects that are often overlooked in the classroom. In elementary school, we learn to read, write, count, etc. In high school we study and prepare ourselves for our future career. But mainly theoretically. E.g. as mechanic has to learn how to repair car practically as well as theoretically, the same should be done in each field of study. Current labor market requires practice. Despite the fact that young people study a lot their chances at the labor market are very often too low because of the lack of practice. One of the most common questions during the interview with a potential employer is «And what about your practice?». When a student had not worked at some company during his study in order to gain some practical skills, it could be quite difficult for him to get a position at the company. This way a student who worked during his studies has quite a competitive advantage against the previous case.
Another problem is that there is a lack of current and updated information at primary, secondary schools as well as at the universities. Textbooks usually include some historical data but teachers randomly provide some additional information and especially older teacher used to keeping on their old style of teaching. That is why I prefer young teachers to older ones as they are usually closer to our generation and provide us with more updated information. However, I do not want to conclude that young teacher is always better than the long-time teacher. The best option is an experienced teacher using an updated information where the theory is connected with the practice.

  164. For me the topic is very interesting and nowadays I think very true. High education seems to be always and advance, but I is not so. Often it is more problematic to find a job for people with university education than for ones with primary or secondary school education. There is majority people in developed countries with university education, but there are not enough posts for them.

The second way of view is, that solving of some problem can be easier with less knowledge. For example in my country at the university of mathematics, the profesor had assigned an arithmetical problem to the student at the beginning of the studies. There had been anyone who hadn’t solved it. Everyone had known the solution with only basic knowledge. At the end of studies he gave them the same arithmetical problem and there was no one who solved it. The students had a lot of knowledge, but weren’t able to think about primitive things.

  165. In high school, it was great, we were 20 in the class. teachers all of us knew and what can motivate us. But with the advent of the high school, everything changed. there are 200 students in class, and the teachers do not know our names, do not even know if someone is missing and they do not care what we do or know. it’s like a factory for students. here in Huelva it seems to me that we teachers know more than in our university. here when I go to campus and i meet teachers, they say hello, ask how I am … and in the Czech Republic? I said hello and no answer at all knows who i am. For some teachers it is simply just a job, making money, and about the results are not interested. I know it’s hard to remember 200 students, but at least a little more personal and friendlier approach would be fine. Everyone thinks that his subject is for us important but we have 10 more like this.they do not care. Could teachers start to talking with us.

  166. I totally agree with video that we can not separate art and science. Even there are two different areas (even in brains we have it divided in left and right parts) it is both very connected and we have to develop them at children in school. I very like one thought which let us know how important are both of them: “Science without art is the body without the soul.« So, why we have to divided them if one without other can not exist? For example without math, we would never survive. Without art, we would never be creative So we can connect and also at school subject we can use them in common.

  167. In Slovenia in first five classes of primary school there is only one teacher for all subjects. Subjects are separated and each one has own curriculum. But if teacher is good and know how to organize his work, he can connect different subjects and show children that everything is related. Sometimes there are also same topics in different subject and if teacher do not know how to connect them and he is teaching them separately, children do not even realized that they are learning the same thing just in different words. This can be very confusing for them and also waste of time (not just for kids, for teachers too). After first five years in primary school there is different teacher for each subject. It is much harder to connect different subject (that in reality are of course already connected), but if communication between all the teachers is good, this can be done as well.

  168. Today’s educational institutions became like a big factory for students. Everything is about money teachers are doing a really good work according to that they have like 200 students in one class. But the problem is that the teachers became like as machines. They want that you know everything and that’s good but the problem is that they don’t take enough time needed for individual. So in the end we have like million of data in our heads but we quickly forget most of it because you still have 9 other items for which you have a lot of the same things ingress.

I think that most teachers did not do so, just work and do not pay it much attention. Communicate in a different way and not their knowledge, because they simply have to satisfy their obligations. The truth is that we learn in school many unnecessary things, but unfortunately this is the curriculum.

One class with 20 different pupils is one class with 20 different ways of understandings, perceptions, views and opinions. Moreover children grow up in a world where they face a complex system of requirements, rules and laws which often doesn’t leave them enough space to develop themselves in a free manner. To be a teacher that works towards giving every pupil the attention it needs and to approach every individual’s personal requirements is almost impossible . Often the individual pupil disappears in the dynamic of the group. Every teacher should have the ambition to help the individuals in the classroom as specific as possible which shouldn’t be limited to their academic education but should also include their personal development. We need to give them the freedom to try themselves and to find themselves in our fast running society.

  171. The problem is that the amount of students in lower grade classes are too high. Teachers cant react on each student properly. They have to make decisions. Teaching is democracy, a teacher will almost always decide whats the best for the biggest part of the class. If classes would be smaller teachers can react better on individuals and try to find compromises.
In higher grades i dont think it is necesarry, it is better of course but older students in universities can make their own decisions. In my opionion is an individual more worth than a hundreds of the same. Individuality is great and it doesnt matter if we are talking about religion, skincolor or opinions.

  172. Everything that we do has a different compact on different people. I remember reading physiologic in high school and the teacher said something really interesting that i still remember. She told us that even though she is saying the same thin to all of us in class, we all get different understanding of what she is saying. she made an example, as if she would bring sun glasses with different colors of the glass to the class, we all would see the same surroundings in different color. The special thing with this teacher was that she included us in her lectures, asked our opinions and asked a lot of questions, she some how made us ( 18 years old teenagers) listen to her. that is the method that needs to be used more in classes and especially universities because the size of the information that we receive in classes are much bigger. it’s not enough to just talk for 2 hours in a 50 person class and then leave the classroom.

When we have a good teacher who can teach us a lot of useful information which can be utilized in practice life, we are lucky people. Actually, this is not frequent and apparent thing. They forget that they are so important for our personal development and they can influence our lives the way they could not imagine. Unfortunatelly in schools we mostly absorbe information without practise in real life. We mostly visit school because it is obligatory but nobody tries to stimulate in us the ambition of education. If the style of education is creative and catchy, it will stimulate us to learn more and more and maybe also we will be interested in the subject.

  174. My personal meaning on this article is as follows. The children of this generation are growing up in a complex dynamic society. The system of education should integrate that knowledge and transform it into a education system where in children can develop there dynamic and creative competences to succeed.
To react on Mae Jemison, the way we teach in our schools today is oldschool and outdated. We should provide more space to children to develop there potential. I think that she makes it very clear in her monolog that the separation of art and science makes no sense for our educational system. There is too less recognition for arts in society, even though we know how important it is this day to develop children there creative potential and other critical skills that are needed for areas of life-long learning. I plead for more accent on creativity in education.

I study in big university, in my faculty only are 4,5 thousand students, sometimes hundred of students in one classroom, it’s rear to have individual student-professor connection/attitude, mostly it’s conveyor feeling which leads to underestimation of education. And the problem is that big number of students put all the effort in this education just for «paper», diploma, because it’s necessary for getting a job, reaching the aims. Do we need education like this? There should be greater student-professor cooperation. I believe it would also lead to higher achievements and higher value of education in general.

  176. Our school system has became careless, nowadays a lot of teachers are just doing their job, for example, like working in factories, wakes up, goes to work, and then does the job like zombies, and don’t care if the student understands the study field or not, they just want to get the salary, and don’t cares, where the student will end up – that’s the saddest thing. My opinion in primary and secondary school, teacher is the mentor for each student, and if teacher is just teaching theories without practice or teamworks, student becomes just like him – without creativity. Just simple teamwork makes student think differently, it makes students think much more than some meaningless test about scientific book or article. In primary and secondary school the main goal isn’t about how much person knows, but to think logical and finds the way how to learn things.

The initial problem makes many experts think that constructivism is the last and ultimate theory.
The teachers appreciate differently each method but they should use all of them combined and the students need to express themselves and discover their own world but the teacher must always lead them in the right scientific way. That would be the perfect educational system.
The students need to learn how to reform their previous knowlege by observing expressing their believes and improvising.Nowdays, unfortunately, this is not existing and teachers and students must work to found the correct balances again!

  178. Based on the video I would like to compare and give an example for science and arts.
As we know maths, programming, statistics and technology are ways which help us to give a solution to some problems. They are not the solutions but the ways to solve problems. In parallel, art during historical events had been a via to help humanity keep going on. More specifically, songs, poems, paintings were vias which helped people understand that they have to have faith, they have to believe in their origins, they have to believe in themselves etc. As a consequence, we can understand that both (science and art) are means of helping humanity understand world and nature better, and they are both important as well for human being. Why do we underestimate art and do we separate it from education system and do not support students on this field? And why do we believe art is only for a few people around the world? That’s a great question and a great issue that needs to be considered very deeply by experts if they want to improve education, so they want to give a chance to the humanity be improved(as a unity of unique people) too.

In this article, constructivism is mentioned as if it is the best theory of education. However, many teachers and experts overlook one point that none of the educational theory is better or superior than each other. There are also other theories such as cognitivism and behaviorism. Each educational theory is good if it is used in the right place and in the right time. Since education is a process constantly changing, we cannot mention only one solution. In addition to this, I definitely agree with Mae Jeminson. People can be both artists and scientists. The reason why people think on the contrary is only our bias. To overcome this prejudice, we have to be open minded and as Mae Jeminson says «I like to think of ideas as potential energy… but nothing will happen until we risk putting them into action.» Therefore, we have to come into action to overcome our bias.

  180. In our country, the school places great emphasis on theoretical knowledge. We learn to memorize a lot of information, but then most of us can´t it use in practice. The labor market is currently placed increasing emphasis on creativity. Though the level of creativity is in every person different, education can it significantly affect. The teacher is a very important factor in the development of creativity of students. I think that in our country adapts to the needs of teaching very slowly. The pupil would´t be only the passive recipient of information, but he would be display his own iniciative. Learning by creating conditions for mutual communication between teacher and student, but also among students, develops a sense of teamwork andenables active participation of all pupils in lessons.

  181. In Poland very often teachers don’t care about children feeling. They don’t looking at them like a individual persons only as a mass of disorganized gamblers. Moreover teachers are creating they opinion about children mostly by their appearance and by it they often giving grade and possibilities. As researching said, teacher’s opinion is one of the most important thing in education. If teacher will thinking that some child is more intelligent (even if is normal), he will cause him to being more intelligent and in result he will be. Often individual opinion of teacher is more important than his style and level of education.

  182. First of being good teacher doesn’t always mean being good educator or human. In United States of America was happen one interesting story, one teacher was teaching with combination of traditional and progressive way of education. He took the worst class of kids that were in school and make them into real intelligent person and each of them went into Yale or other good University. I’m afraid that I forget his name, but that story is famous. Our mission as teachers it to teaching children not only subject but also taking care about young people grow up into open minded and general knowing persons, not only specialized and without individual character.

  183. Mae Jemison’s lecture explains lots of things about what is wrong in educational system. When we compare the past with the day that we live now, there are a lot of mentality changes about how we look at the life and everything. In 14th, 15th, 16th centuries there were less TV, no internet, no cellphones, not even computers. But people used to study hard to understand their mission in that life. There was competition between people about creating something. When we look at the present days,as Mae Jemison said we lost our mission. We don’t even think what our mission is. What the mission of our generation is? There are more TV programs with less things which worth to watch, lots of communication tools with less human communication. Everybody has thousands of friends on social sharing sides but nobody has a real friend anymore. In the classes lots of students don’t even know their classmate’s name and not even try to communicate with them. But everybody spend more than 5 hours on facebook or some other sides. We are getting away from each other other.
Another missing thing on the present day is trying to separate science and arts. Science helps us to understand universe and the art helps us to understand personal experiences. When we combine them we would be able to improve our creativity. If we can do that we would be able to leave more useful things to next generation as past generation did for us.

  184. Simona Martinkutė dice: Responder

I definitely agree with Mae Jemison that science and art can’t be separated. Why? Because both of them include the same things for example construction and deconstruction or the creativity. I think that the expression that “We use constructive and deconstructive techniques in everything” is very real, practical. What scientists could invent if they do not use the imagination, do not use combination or separation? And what about artists? If they could make masterpieces without visions, dreams or without connection/ disconnection of different things, materials? In my opinion, a good teacher has to use her/him creativity, the potency of imaging as well to involve, to engage the students in the process of learning – teaching. It is hard to attract the attention of pupils but I believe that if teacher does that the education of pupils will be completely successful and get enormous benefits of students and pleasure of teachers.

  185. In my opinion, teaching and learning are very correlated to each other. Because the quality of knowledges got from the teacher depends on the way he/she is teaching. That way has to be very interesting and even creative because then it gives more benefit and attracts to learn. Every human can be a teacher but not everybody can be a GOOD teacher what is very important not even for a student or child separately but to all society because it has significance on how will the world look tomorrow. And, of course, learning has influence for teaching especially in 21th century because it is more and more difficult to attract child‘s/student‘s attention. So the teacher has to be ready to give all himself to involve his students/childs into the process of learning.

  186. I believe that children at school should be taught from 10 to 13, the basic applications and approaches to many different scientific fields. However, at the age by the age of 13 the students should have by now discovered what field they are mainly interested in. Therefore, and they have the basic applications, which they tried and saw they were not interested in, and also they have the opportunity to elaborate, discover and improve in a specific field. A student can study any field he wants, however many students over think all the difficulties, amount of effort and complexity that some scientific fields contain. For example i love chemistry, Physics and Biology and i find them interesting, but the time involved in learning all of these things, drew me away from them. Each student must find interesting subjects, in order to use 100% of their brains. Arts play an important role and improve the divergent thinking, and broaden the horizons.

  187. Katarzyna Stawrakakis dice: Responder

I think it was really interesting what Jemison said on the video about dividing art and science. I agree with it, because we have every subject so separated from others and so specialized that we end up not knowing anything else. In Poland we have to choose our path of education very early, to be exact when we are 12 years old. After this choice automatically we are focusing only on humanistic subjects, such as history and native language, or mathematic, physics and chemistry. So you are young and in most cases will change your mind few times, but it will be too late because you will not have the knowledge which is essential to follow the other pattern.

  189. The speech of Mae Jemison is good and I agree, that we should look to the future and make for our posterity a little bit better world. But I think it is dificult, because lot of people can´t look to future and focuses on what is now.
Education is undoubtedly of of the steps to improve. Is very important not just for human developing but also for the country as a whole.
The next factor to improve mantioned in Mae Jemison speech also is creativity. The creativity is very important, can bring us new ideas, which we can use for improvement. Without creativity we could not move forward.

  191. The new era of the modern world offers new opportunities to grow and improve. But we must not think only in the present, because next to us grov children who are our future. Each pupil is an individual, who have individual features; people like uniqueness, with distinctive character, temperament and ability.
The teachers’ main tasks are to study and analyze each pupil’s individuality. When this analiyse have been summarized, they need to find the most suitable method for the students to be able to express themselves and grow.
Each generation creates something new that we apply today. For example, kids nowadays are brought up in a very creative environment and new technologies, such as interactive whiteboard that our Government wants to introduce, as an aid to facilitate the work of teachers. Yes, of course, every innovation is good, but it can affect children negatively. In my opinion, the child must think by himself, he should investigate and find out world around him, he should be able to use all his senses (for example, little finger muscles). But with these new technologies, the development of this field is on degradation.
Currently, in the field of electronics there are many innovations, and at the future there will be even more. Life will be relieved, but I hope not too much, otherwise people will stay lazy, if technologies will do everything in their place.
The integration of art and science is not a genius idea, but it opens up many new possibilities and learning can be more creative. Personally, I used not to like physics, chemistry, because learning formulas by heart was useless. But learning in creative way, like doing experiments, in our mind remains much more information, because we love what we do.
In Latvia training system in creativity has developed a very high level, as are applied to the integrated teaching method of teaching children to make more enjoyable and interesting. Mathematics we learn through crafts, drawing, nature’s classroom.

  192. My personal view on changes is that changes sometime are good for students. The most important thing for me as student is that whatever professor is trying to teach me is teachable and way he/ she is teaching me is interesting. I mean if you’ve got a 4 hour lecture, possibility of getting bored and loose interested is very high. School system should therefore be revised; they should make subjects more interesting for students. Science & art should be here combined into one »formula». If you look at kids brought up now days. Almost everyone has got smartphone and video games at home, give them a 3 hours lectures based on formulas only, and you’ll easily notice how quickly they lose interest. It is therefore almost impossible (in this century) to separate science & art.

Learning or obtaining new knowledge will sometime be difficult, but it often changes the way we think and/or the way we act.

  193. Efforts to create better learning conditions for future generations is of course the neccesary. But the question remains: who is trying to set them up and how? It is very difficult to assess the efforts of these people, because everyone does it for to get a thing which actully wants or thinks that the others desirefor it. These innovators also can be wrong because tehre are like one hundred heads so one hundred views as well. But especially how can I be sure they do it with pure intention and the intention really is something to improve for the benefit of society? It is not always possible to satisfy everyone, but it is a necessity to transform outdated teaching processes to the core and essence remained the same. Change can be a way, method or process of how to finalize it. You need to choose the positions of the most dedicated and creative people for their craft. Only those who will give their heart inside to work could bring all three logics together. It is necessary to find people who do not do it for gett popularity and visibility or for money. And, let’s face, nowadays it´s quite difficult.

  194. I would like to point briefly some negative aspects of the modern curriculums and ways of teaching.

A basic principle nowadays is the division of the scientific fields into separate subjects, the individual teaching of each one and the encouragement of students to specialize in a field from a very early age. But is this the best approach to knowledge?
The beginning of the fragmentation of knowledge began at the Age of Reason (18th century), when sciences were separated and new ones were invented. Although the idea of the unity of knowledge had been mentioned ever since the ancient times (Plato’s Res Publica), pedagogists realized its significance very recently.
The modern term for this idea is “interdisciplinarity” and it refers to the use of two or more academic disciplines into the investigation of a topic. F.e. teaching mathematics with a reference to their history and a connection to arts. In this way students can understand better the nature and evolution of science, as well as they can easily connect it to reality. Interdisciplinarity gains great importance in the modern age of disruption and contradiction.

The first article also refers to an other possible mistake of pedagogists, the overestimation and the sterile application of a theory, such as constructivism.

In conclusion, there is not an ultimate or perfect theory, which could solve all the teaching and learning problems. Students are individual humans with specific needs and abilities; each teacher must try to understand his pupils and adopt the best teaching methods for them.

  195. The things that come to our mind don’t make sense or a difference before we put the ideas in movement. Every big and multinational company was all just an idea in the beginning. Take Ingvar Kamprard for example, maybe you don’t know him just by the name but I’m sure you know witch company he is the founder of, IKEA. IKEA started in 1943 in a little garage, the name of the company is an abbreviation of Ingvar, Kamprard, Elmatryd, Agunnaryd, where Elmatryd is the name of the farm Ingvar grow up at in the county of Elmatryd, Småland (Province), Sweden. In 2008 the IKEA got 135 000 employees in 44 different countries. What I’m trying to say is that this was just a little poor guy in the beginning who was going round his county with his bike and bought different stuffs for maybe in today’s value 10 cents and later he sold them for 20 cents. So every single company that gets our economy and world turning is just a little idea before you set it into movement and it can starts growing.

  196. I think knowledge and education are not a real problem, the real problem is us (people). It is because humanity has changed in many ways, the way we think, the things we want primarily, the way we wear, everything has changed and the things that tie us to the the past or our traditions remained very little. So, there comes a need for new education style for these changed people. Also, there is a lack of new approaches to education and teaching. And there are many stereotyped beliefs about these. But we see that many of these beliefs do not work for the new generation. However, people do not want to seperate themselves from old knowledge and old type of curriculum. Constructivist thoughts are not original for people and there is no hope for progress, because many thinks that there is nothing to do new. It seems there is no future in terms of innovation. However, thoughts of now will shape the future. So, we need a new style of curriculum or educational process which integrates all skills of those modern people and includes the new needs of nowadays’ folk.

  197. Firstly; I would say one should criticise anything no matter if it is a scholar writing a paper about curriculum or if it is me commentinf this article. Especially this article should be criticised! Because there are so many error in this article which is not shared with me! For example “the last paradigmatic revolution is over, not only in quantity but also in quality” . Do I need to say more? however, everything should be criticised in constructive way. Secondly; In my opinion it is important not to determine or clinch that something is “like this” or “like that” because I think anything can be changed, and nothing more or less is consistent, particularly when it comes to the educational paradigm, becuase if everything would be consistent, (considering tradition, authority and other conservative believes) we would not develop our brains, and if we are not developing our brains we are more or less stranded. Do we want to go back in time? I do not think so!

  198. First, about Mae Jemisons speach; She is absolutely right, we should always stribe for a better world, and be careful not to become «laggers». I also agree that we should look for the future, and create a better world for the next generations. But does that mean that every «break trough» invention will be a resource for future generations? I dont think so.. We live in a world where we constantly urge for more, and we never really get satisfied..
Education becomes more and more important nowadays, not only for you and me so that we can make a decent living, but also for countrys and governments. There is a lot of prestige in having the smartest brains in the world. That is one of the reasons why we will always reconsider our methods of learning, what worked good for us, and what went wrong? I think that we are only in the beginning of the discovery of learning, schools and teachers are having more freedom than ever before to explore teaching…

  199. Thinking that constructivism is the last and only thing shows us that there is no more creativity among us. We have to relearn how to think, react and live creative. I think creativity is the most important thing for our generation and the following ones because nowadays we have a lot of problems that need creativity to solve them. We need new ideas concerning energy supply, solving hunger problems etc. Those things are the real things to work on, if we want to exist a few more years, rather than thinking I don’t care what happens afterwards as long as I’m happy.

  200. It is interesting that Jemison was talking about our influence to other generations. It is sad that in these days most of the people think only about themselfs, in this moment and not think about how all the thing now can develop and how they can influence in the future generations. I was thinking also about gathering of three logics: teachers, students and subjects logic. It is important that we are aware of connection of all three logics. Idea of constructivizem is also very popular theme which is not enough to improve the school system. Problem of originality also shows that teacher may think that constuctivisem is the last novelty of the teaching and learning. This can be very demotivating and it is important to overcome this thinking.

  201. Despite the possible problematic issues that may arose following principle of those logics (the teacher’s logic, the student’s logic and the subject’s logic), I still believe that they are basic ideas that should guide teaching process of each subject. This trinity is closely related to one of the ideas described by the speaker in the video as she stated that: “Understanding + Resources + Will = Outcome”. Although the idea was not applied for educational matters, but I believe that it can be adapted to the teaching issues as well. Understanding of the subject is brought and presented by a teacher; resources could be considered as a subject itself as it includes materials and ideas that are thought; and will strongly lies upon student’s logic. Therefore, one has to have a harmonical combination of all of those logics to maintain a good outcome.

  202. I agree with the fact, that everything we do at the present, it will influences the future generations. The main problem is, the most people live “now and here” no matter what will happen in the future.

I think, everyone has to decide too early what exactly wants to do in the life. When we would like to change it, its late or its impossible ´cause of many reasons. Maybe it would be good to teach longer time just general subjects, on the other hand, the society needs people, who are educated in the field.
A combination of art and science is a good idea, people should to be creative, to be able to bring new things, knowledge of various fields of science. Everything is not just about learning what is given to you. Bring something new for the society, as well as for next generation, there is a sense of our teaching – to be beneficial for something. So it has to be exactly: each generation must discover its mission on the basis of needs of the present, but at the same time take into account the thoughts of future.
